thx silent jay

it worked...i only had the option of 8-bit and 16-bit however...i tried 16-bit and was able to cut via layer...ty much!

@ trem0r

I had the same problem. I simply started a new workspace at the same resolution then did a copy paste thing.

ok....im just stupid....can u explain to me just what exactly u mean by wat u just said..lol

WHat I ment was that there are a lot of things you cant do to the "background" that you can do to a "layer". If you open a new file at he same resolution then you will have teo windows open. The one with the pattern layout and a blank one. Click on the one with the layout and hit ctrl-A then ctrl-C. This will select all then copy. Next click on the blank window and hit Ctrl-V. This will paste the layout as a new layer. You can do this without opening a new workspace but I just open a new one cause I like to keep things neat. The whole layer thing is pretty cool. One thing I like to do is take the space around where you will be painting, you know the black space, and make a new layer with the areas to be painted all transparent (the "magic wand" cutout tool and the "select inverse" tools are great for this). I then put that layer at the top of the stack and hide it. Now I don't have to worry about staying in the lines. I just show the top layer and just like a cookie cutter my creation takes shape.

@ Argh. I finally got the whole Vert welding thing down. I guess I just never really noticed you can set the tolerance up and down. Now I just highlight the couple verts I want to weld and set the tolerance high enough to let them weld. Instead of me trying to move them close enough to eachother and screwing up the general shape of the model, it finds the middle of the two or three verts and welds them there. This seems to keep the shape pretty close. I've been able to take a couple models with poly counts of almost 2000 and knock them down to less than 1000 without losing too much detail. You were right about the texturing. I went through the tutorial and found a lot of cool tips in there. I'm working on a highly detailed texture set just for ships. I'll send you a copy of the textures when I get enough made.

Excellent, can't wait to see it

Hey Guys!
First, I must say, Awesome work everyone! this is my first attempt at modding anything, as well as my first attempt at 3d modelling. It's an experience that's given me new respect for the creators of all the mods I've used.

anyhow, here's a link to a pic of my ship. hopefully it links right.
Edge Hornet
if that doesn't work, try My Yahoo Briefcase and click "Edge Hornet All Angle"

Let me know what you think? right now, it's at 10,212 polys... I'm trying to figure out how to get it below 5k... soon as that's done, and I'm done Ini editing, i'll try to upload it. if anyone thinks it's worth it.

It's a cute design- you can very, very easily lose the 5K by modeling it more efficiently, and letting the skin do most of the work. Good luck with this- this looks like a very promising and original design

Post Thu Oct 06, 2005 1:26 pm

yeh. I've rebuilt the basic ship already. cut it down to just over 5k polys.
Granted, lost a little bit of the shape I wanted, but again, with experience, I'll find the lower poly ways of doing exactly what I want.

Any recommendations for armament on this thing? I don't want to make it an UBER powerful ship... It's got to be realistic.

nice job 5pork!!

very nice design

is the black extrusion the cockpit? kinda looks like it...anyway i hoped it was hehe, i really wouldnt mind flying it, very nice! congratz

Yeah, the black thing is the cockpit. once I actually finish making this a useable ship, I.E. infocards and all that, I'll upload the mod. after that, I think I'll work another rebuild with some better color, and something that looks more like a cockpit.

The original Idea for the ship belongs to my friend Nak, he deigned it for a comic he's working on making. It's actually supposed to be a very small unmanned drone, hence, no actual cockpit was in the original blue-prints. I've just assumed that what was the sensor array in the drone would be the cockpit in the ship.

Here is a ship I've been working on. It was a simple design to help me learn texturing better. The bandit I made a while back was pretty much unplayable because of the high poly count. Argh revamped it by knocking down polys a bit and achieving the same facited look with pure textures. I was pretty intrigued so I busted open his tutorial once more and went to town. Well this is what I ended up with. I call it the black widdow because when I first made it the ship was black with a red hourglass shape on the back. I ended op scrapping that skin but liked the name so I made a little badge for the front of the ship so it could keep the name. Thanks a bunch Argh for the great tutorial.

Wow! Very nice- can't wait to see it flying around in the game engine. Good textures really make a huge difference- that's going to look great in the FL engine

Post Sun Oct 09, 2005 2:16 pm

Here it is in the game. It took me a bit because this is the first time I've tried using the textured glass and glow maps. It's still missing a couple lights and stuff. I just slid it in to the game by changing it out with the starflyer so I could get a couple quick screen shots and I guess I missed a couple things in the goods.ini. Anyway, anyone who wants this for their mod just shoot me an email. I figure this one belongs to Lancersreactor since I made it completely from tips found in the tutorials here.
