Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer

@jsncalif11:

I only wish I had more free time- I would be re-texturing a large part of your collection at this point, because so many of those designs are perfect for civilian ships that would really add a lot of variety to FL and not look too out-of-place

Unfortunately, I'm major-ly tied up getting the next version of the XML Toolkit Mod done. The Bandit will be featured, among other new ships. I originally assigned it to the Red Hessians, but I've had time to think about things and I've decided that I'm going to make another version of the Toolkit at some point, with the proper number of ships for every Faction (to go along with the new balance formulae I'm working out- the game design will have enough "room" for this many designs to be interesting). I don't have time for such a major undertaking at the moment, and I want to release WOS B2 before I get to that... so let me know how you're progressing on your quest.

As for advice... my best advice is to read through "How to Skin", and study the processes and software I use to make texturemaps. It isn't the "only" way to go about things, but in my opinion... it's one of the easiest, and it works like a charm for imports into MS3D

@ jsncalif11

The easiest way to put your textures into Freelancer is to use the MAT file exporter for milkshape which does most of the work for you.

It is important to have you image files in either .tga or .dds (better option) format.

Argh's tutorial is a good read as well.

HI!

is there somebody who wants to create a ship for our mod? Its just for fun.
I am looking for a new Bretonia VHF. Should look bretonian, any other styles are free to choose by the creator.

DTX,

there is a picture on page 4 of this thread where you posted a photo of a ship you were commisioned to create for someone. I am asking for permission to also create a ship simular to the design of that photo, or if you could tell me the name of the person that gave you the photo so i could ask them at least....its an awsome design and would like to try it myself many thanks

@nighthawk:

Beautiful model, can't wait to see it skinned. Looks like a shoe-in for the Red Hessians, if you ask me- whenever I draw ships (I scribble down new designs constantly on scrap paper at work) Red Hessians always end up with blade-like designs that like that one

@Trem0r:

That's a nice re-interpretation of the drawing, but the skin... well... basically I think that you've done a pretty good job technically, aside from a few areas, like the tops of the "engine bulbs" that are obviously stretched/distorted... but I don't care for the clash of colors / styles between the main body and the wings. Now, this doesn't mean you suck- just that I would've made different choices. But, if I were doing this... I'd give it a more uniform color scheme, and then use subtle details to enhance things, along with using a glowmap to put some tiny lights and other glows onto the skin, to really give it a "gigantic" feeling without adding any polygons or making the skin ridiculously huge.

Anyhow... for a second try, that's pretty darn nice, so I shouldn't quibble about it- don't take it the wrong way... it's a quibble about the artistic choices, not about your technical execution.

lmao...yea the colors are a bit much =p

question: could i import pieces of the model 1 at a time into the uv mapper to create my own skins in photoshop...i dont think all the pieces would fit on the screen if i did it all at once, and i think it will also be easier to paint, just take a little more time if im able.

Er... um... read through my Tutorial, "How to Skin"... it explains the process you need to use. FL can support DDS texturemaps up to 4096X4096, although for a typical piece, you want to keep it to 1024X1024 if possible.

i read your tut argh, however, in your tut you included your complete model on the map, i want to know if you can include maybe a section of you model at a time?

Yes, you can just put a part onto a map. But that's terribly wasteful, and bad practice. Avoid whenever possible.

Post Wed Sep 28, 2005 8:35 am

while i got you here argh,

im following your tut, and on the step where you, Make a new cut via layer, isnt available to me. none of the options are avialable, any ideas why?

Post Wed Sep 28, 2005 9:22 am

Um... it's "New Layer via Cut"... and if it's not showing up, you probably don't have anything selected, would be my guess...

Post Wed Sep 28, 2005 9:41 am

i'll take a screenie for you...

hope this helps..ty

Post Wed Sep 28, 2005 10:15 am

Looks like you just need to select Layer-->New-->Via Cut to me...

Oh! Duh! You need to change that BMP to 24-bit color. You cannot make new Layers with 8-bit BMPs...
