Tolwyn:
I've set up the ships to give an over-all Wing Commander/Privateer "Feel" to the game.
In every Wing Commander/Privateer game, it is assumed that ships and environment of the other games exists in another section of the Wing Commander Galaxy.
Since we are not recreating any one particular Wing Commander/Privateer game, but taking ships from every game, I had to come up with a way to integrate ships from different eras and sectors (games) into a cohesive form.
Freelancer is a game full of Pirates, Smugglers, and Alien invaders.
That is the same premise for Privateer...
So I started with that.
And since Freelancer, and Privateer, take place in a Sector, and not onboard a Battleship, or other similar military ship, I had to come up with a viable environment.
For those who are familiar with the early Wing Commander games, we have the Epee, Hornet, Sabre, Ferret, and a few others.
Since, in real-time, and game-time, this is much later, rather than making those older ships more prominent, I made them background ships.
This gives the feeling of a post-war environment, sorta like the "Barn-Stormers" who, after World War I, took old, out-dated, military craft, and made a living using them.
To make the Confed, Police, and the Pirate worlds appear to be constants throughout the game, I've given every Navy the Gladius, the Police the Talon, and the Pirates the Talon.
This gives the overall impression of being back in Privateer 1, which is how Freelancer is set up as, anyway.
As the Wing Commander III & IV games, along with Privateer 1, are the most popular, I've tried to make the ships from those games more visible, and desirable.
The Bounty Hunters, Mercs in Privateer 1, use their Privateer 1 ships: the Demon, Stiletto, and the Centurion.
The Border Worlds use their ships from Wing Commander: The Banshee, and the Vindicator.
The Kilrathi use their ships: Dralthi IV, Vaktoth, Gothri, and the Paktahn.
Juni, who is in a secret organization, uses a Top Secret ship-the Morningstar.
The Navy, Confed, has: the Gladius, Crossbow, and the Broadsword.
The Order should have a ship like the Dragon, or the Excalibur, but as we don't have those, they got the Thunderbolt.
Seperating the ships, and the mod, into vignettes is not that feasible in Freelancer as one might think.
Next time you're on Manhattan, watch the ships flying by...
They're from everywhere, and include almost every ship in the game.
Keeping Wing Commander ships in one area, which represents one game, is impossible.
So...
I've done the best I could to create a universe that is united, diverse, and I hope, faithful to the Wing Commander and Privateer games that we all love.
And as the old saying goes:
You can make some of the people happy all of the time...
You can make all of the people happy some of the time...
BUT...
You can't make all of the people happy all of the time!
I've done the best I can, with what I've gotten.
