Privateer: The Reckoning MOD is ALIVE!

Here you can find news, get help and comment about the Privateer / Wing Commander Total Conversion called ?Privateer: The Reckoning? and accompanying Mods

Post Sat Feb 07, 2004 12:04 am

olddog:
The way FL's missions are, doing missions in the next sector may be hard. I can try.
As to equalizing, that's all I do...
(My other 2 mods are "The Equalizer" and "The Equalizer Mk II"

Bob:
quotations=j/k=joke

BTW-I made a really BIG mistake!
I loaded up the Privateer Music, and the Privateer Sounds, and ran v1.07
I shouldn't have done that!

After a few battles I realized something.
This isn't a Privateer mod.
Tolwyn is just doing to Freelancer what he's also doing to Freespace 2...
Making a complete Wing Commander conversion.

Once I've got v1.07 debugged, and uploaded, I'm outa here!
So get whatever ships you want in it to me fast!
It WILL be uploaded by Friday the 13th.
Fitting, huh?

olddog - At the moment, Reckoning is mostly a ship mod. Eventually I'd like to expand outward to make it into a full universe, with new systems and the like, but I'm afraid what you're saying simply isn't possible at the moment. Will try to get other Privateer features in.

warzog: what's this about you being "outta here"? Do you have some sort of outside commitments? Are you quitting the team? Is this too intense or something? I know that, back when I was modding in the middle of last year, I went through many of the same things you did - couldn't sleep, could't eat, couldn't concentrate on anything other than the mod. I was working almost solo then, and it was hell. I'm not going through that again.

That's why I don't want you to leave the team. I really want to make this into the best mod for FL ever ... not just a glorified shippack (like I said the last one was), but a living, breathing, universe. A total conversion, or at least as total as can be made. Not just a good WIng Commander mod, but a good mod, period. And for that we need people. People who know their stuff.

This might seem ambitious, but I don't think it's any more insane than the Free Worlds mod ... as you might be able to tell, I've been playing it a bit and I really admire the professionalism put into it. The mod itself is bits and pieces, but the most important ones are there, and despite its unfinished state it's compelling as ever. I want The Reckoning to be the Free Worlds mod, only in Privateer. I don't want it to be just a slapdash mishmash of ships and places ... I want it to at least feel the tiniest bit authentic.

This mod needs everyone it can get - turnover has been pretty bad ever since it died the first time. About the only people there from more or less the start are Tolwyn and I (even if you look at the people in the threads, they're different - I think only sp00n and Sir Spectre have been around mostly all the way). If we're going to make this into a great mod, we need to attract attention. And the best way to do that is to keep making progress. Slow, perhaps, but progress nonetheless. Tolywn and I can't do it all ourselves - Tolwyn, for all his talent as an organizer, has his hands full working on at least two other mods, and me ... well, you saw what happens when I work alone <G> The point is, we need everyone who'll help. Even two modders are still better than one, and if we get Acid back, and Stannum to finish his meshes, and the other people from back then ... who knows?

Anyway, I don't know if I misinterpreted you, but I felt I needed to get that off my chest. And I want everyone to know that I am dead serious to finish this mod.

@warzog: you have to understand: I can't invest my whole time into this mod. Wing Commander Saga is my first priority, mainly because it is my first project and it is very close to completion.

I have already asked who is going to convert the Centurion and got precious little feedback. Bob, what about you? I might have a Drayman and perhaps a couple of other ships. But most of them van only be used as non-player ship.

And again, everything in due time. I promised to deliver Priv models, and so will I. Bob, there are a few issues we need to dicuss. Could you please email me to [email protected]. It has something to do with the Vega Strike WC mod and its models.

Bob:
When I see a Centurion, Orion, and a Galaxy, I'll know we're working on Privateer.
I signed on to do a full-blown Privateer Conversion.
Not a Wing Commander Conversion.
You think I care about Wing Commander?
I don't!
I Love Privateer.

Tolwyn:
I understand your prior commitment. The site said you've been working on the Freespace 2 conversion for 21 months. THAT's passion! THAT's commitment!
I have that for Privateer! Not for Wing Commander. I think Bob's the only other person on the team that cares about Privateer.

Note:
I felt I owed y'all an explaination, but that's all.
This is a hobby.

Update:
The "Sigma Bug" is squashed.
Just got to run through the other systems, and the missions.
One or two days barring any other bugs.

to make it more clear to you: I am doing models which are easy to bring into FL engine: i.e. those that use a few maps, have no geometry problems, etc... And afterall we already have a few Priv ships in the game (Dralthi, Broadsword). And again, there are another two people who are skilled in conversion. Alll I have to do is to supervise their conversion (i.e. size, hp). I think, that Bob could take care of the Centurion.

I'm not totally certain what you mean by size problems (the Centurion always seemed all right to me) ... as for hardpoints, you can do that even without Milkshape, as long as you have a feel for coordinates. In fact, I'm using this one guy's corrected cmp, with proper hardpoints and a REAL LIVE TURRET Problem is, he doesn't seem to have posted an email - but I think we could get one of the Lancersreactor people to find it for us.

That said, if you want I'll gladly reconvert the Centurion ... it's just that, considering the size disparities between warzog and me, I'm not sure I should be the one doing it <G> If you'll give me some sort ofguide as to how big in units it should be, I'll gladly comply.

And, as I mentioned to Tolwyn (I think), I mailed MamiyaOtaru to see if we could get his Orion ingame, at least as a placeholder.

I'm not sure if there's any way to import base models to Freelancer, but if there is this would be the greatest thing ever

@Bob: that is why I always request a milkshape file to be included with the model. I am doing size revision after the conversion is done.

Actually, there's a cmp importer right here, you you probably don't even need the MS#D file: http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/news/co ... Freelancer

In any case, I don't have it; it belongs to Stannum, whom warzog contacted a few pages back. Said he was going to put the files on hgis site, haven;t hgeard anything.

And also, I'd like the Drayman very much. We desperately need a decent transport model; there's like ten fighters and two bombers, but no transports :\ This is a Privateer game, after all (it might have WC models in it, but in the long run it'd be useless to pretend it's anything else)

Anyway, I'm tired and I'm not toally sure what I'm saying. To bed!

Bob:
I finally got a chance to check out your mod.
1)I'd already changed WeaponModDB.ini when you told me to before.
2)Added the ammo limit, cool! I tried, and tried, but I couldn't find that one!
3)Copied your NPCships.ini, nice work!
4)Please remove all of the fins and other ship parts from the different Universe\System\*.ini's
--They cause bugs like the Sigma bug.
--Are only required for wrecks, and debris, and MUST be in the ShipArch.ini AND SolarArch.ini to work.
--(and not cause a bug!)
5)Not sure about adding the KeyMap.ini-players can do that themselves.
6)What's the KeyList.ini for?
7)If you change the "visit=0" to "visit=1" in Universe.ini, they'll show up on the map.
--Do the same thing with the Jumpholes/gates, and the lines between the systems show up, too!

BTW-I'm pretty sure I can change the beginning so that Trent either has to buy a ship, or leaves FP7 in his ship.
Just wish we had a Tarsus!

Edit:
Bob, I emailed you a jpg of the Sirius code map for the Universe.ini pos=#,#
Don't know if you need it, but it couldn't hurt.
Combined with the above links, and it should make setting up Gemini easier.
BTW-I just noticed...
Another 24+hr day!!!
(25.5hrs to be exact.)
Anyone says they want this mod more than me will get a good whack in the face!
(When I wake up.)

@Warzog, you can go the Free Worlds route and use a buoy to dock with the planet or go the Giskard way and use multiple docks on one planet. Then maybe make them invisible. I think it was Giskard who figured out how to do it.

The easiest way for putting 4 docking rings around a planet (in my limited editing experienced opinion) would be to quadruple the entries for planets. Like Li_01a, Li_01b, Li_01c, & Li_01d. I don't know if its necessary or not, but this way in the game you see and do everything the same and can dock with the planet from most directions, but you're actually docking with different entries, although you wouldn't know it. The problem with this is, I don't know which dock you'd fly too if you can't see the rings and you just dock with the planet.

The more direct approach would be to somehow link all 4 rings (or however many) to the same entry. And this is what I don't know to be possible or not. Because whoever did put 4 rings on a planet did have separate entries, because he had put the major 4 factions all with their own bases on the planet.

Sir Spectre:
The Buoy method sounds better.
I already know how to do the multiple docking ring way.
The reason I don't like the multi method is that it's to much like the Privateer 2 way.
Right now, my primary concern has been to get the ships, weapons, upgrades, etcetera, working as they would in Privateer.
My secondary concern has been to make it bug free.
Once all of that has been accomplished, then I can concentrate on the details.
Docking, commodities, trade routes, storyline, the Gemini sector, etc.
I need to have a working, stable engine, to build on.
That was the reason for releasing v1.06, to help find bugs, and issues, that needed immediate attention.
Bob McDob's return to the project has pushed it forward by months!
Please be patient, we WILL add as much as the FL program will let us.
Items like engine upgrades are not allowed by the FL program, and regrettably must be left out.
(FL won't allow you to sell, or transfer, your ship's engine, I tried.)

to Bob McDob, and all:
Stannum contacted me today.
He stated that his old upload site has gone down.
He's looking for a new one, and figures it'll take about a week to find one.
Once he's got one, he'll upload EVERYTHING!!!
That includes; Tarsus, Centurion, Orion, and the Galaxy.
I believe he said that the Galaxy needs some minor texturing to finish it.
Take care,

and

Update:
Add a few new things:
1) Changed the mass (weight) of ship's upgrades, weapons, and ammo.
--should affect handling.
2) Replaced the Bounty Hunter's Guild with the Mercenary's Guild.

Pani:
I've lost the file you sent me.
Could you email it to me, again?
