hehe

Kewl!

I have the "Game Commander Trial" that I am going to use for free voice commands in game.
And, now I have the "Gave Voice Trial" which I will use for ingame VOICE CHAT with other players!

The combo of the two, if it works, will make FreeLancer a dream!
No more having to type to talk to other players....I HATE TYPING! hehe

Do you only need to download the free program, and it works with your standard microphone? Or do you have to buy hardware to use with it as well?

Post Wed Mar 12, 2003 4:17 pm

Microsoft has game commander - a voice activation thingie. works horribly with FL on my 200mhz 500 meg ram machine, making graphics slightly ****y and controls unresponsive even if its running in low priority.

Post Wed Mar 12, 2003 5:59 pm

Yeah, that's my question.............do you need to buy that voice activation hardware, such as Microsoft's; or, can you just download the free voice commander software and talk into your standard microphone connected to your sound card?

The microsoft one requires the hardware, the shareware one doesn't but has limitations on the number of commands

Any standard microphone should work.
But, a noise cancelling one will work better. Most standard "headset mics" are noise cancelling ones.

Um, "200Mhz" isn't even meeting the game's required/reccomended machine stats.
I don't see the game running that well on a "200Mhz" machine alone. Let alone with ANYTHING else running at the same time.
It runs GREAT with both running on my P4 1.8Ghz (256MB RAM) machine...doesn't slow the game down at all, and voice commands activate instantly -no delay at all.

BridgeBoy,

Okay, I get what you are asking now...sorry not fully awake yet.

Okay, the "Game Commander Trial" will work with any microphone, but a noise cancelling one works best.

The "M$ Game Voice Trial" is a CHAT ONLY program.
It doesn't have the "voice command" but is a great way to actually TALK to other players on the server you play, if they use it too.
The FULL version of "Game Voice" comes with a hardware box, and does both the "voice commands" and offers many other "voice chat" funstions...like having several GROUPS/CHANNELS you can switch bettwen going at once and only talking to the one you want to. (Very nice for FreeLancer since a server could also run Game Voice and have a channel for each House System. Players could hit a button and talk to anyone, anywhere, without always having to hear players on the other side of the Sirius System I am debating if I should buy the full thing and run it in conjunction with my server when I open it.)

Anyway, hope that answers your question...now I MUST get some caffiene! hehe

Fly well,

Yeah, so your just using the free download of "Game Commander" and using a micophone (noise cancelling or whatever) and you are able to voice activate up to five commands with the free version.

I could do the same thing you are doing then, all I have to do is search for and download the free program, and just use the microphone that came with my computer/ Audigy 2 Sound Card.

I see what you mean about noise cancelling though........all the explosions and or NPC voices coming over the speakers might set the voice activation off?!?!?!? Maybe you just need to make sure to program commands that aren't likely to be imitated by sounds produced in the game (if you have just a regular microphone)?

Well, I posted the link to it for you on the first page of this thread.
So, all I can say is try it and see how you like it.
It's only about 5MB to download, so it's not like it will take all day.

Good luck,

I bought a GameVoice at the same time as Freelancer (thanks to this thread!), and can't imagine playing without it! I've programmed just about all the key-commands, meaning my hands are always free to concentrate on flying. It's accurate, and works instantly with no delay whasoever. I've tried it with Ghost Recon too, and it's really like a new game; just having to whisper (it's quite sensitive, the mic!) 'Alpha team' to instantly switch to another team is certainly easier for me. I strongly recommend any Freelancer fan try one. It'll open up a whole new world of gaming, honest!

Well then, Kevin, you just made the time I took to start this thread worthwhile for me.

I think I may just have to save up and get the Game Voice as well.
I do really love being able to just talk to my PC...in fact, I use the trial version for more than just games, like all I do is say "Connect" and my internet connects for me, say "forum" and this place opens up in Internet Explorer, say "tunes" and my jukebox starts up, then "play" and the music starts. It has so many good uses.

The trial is great for just a taste, but I think I really want the full deal...with the chat and everything.

Maybe I will see you online sometime and we can group up and use voice...a heck of an advantage in combat I would guess.

Fly well,

Okay, 2000 mhz.

Well, I can't get Windows to recognize that free version of Game Commander. It won't load or unzip. But it sounds like I would like it anyway, and the Game Voice is only $26.95 from Gateway online, and with free shipping, so I just ordered it.

I also just bought the Belkin Nostromo n50 Speedpad today, locally at Babbages for $29.95.......it looks like it will be great too. Coupled with the Game Voice should be awesome.

I'm glad you made this post as well.
