I've played all the Wing Commanders except for Prophecy and Special Ops, and have enjoyed pretty much every one of them.

Independence Wars 1 & 2 for a little bit...I wish I had more time to get into them. Nothing has given me a better sense of the vastness of space than those two games, and the feel of the ships floating through space was more realistic than most anything else I've played.

Both Freespaces. Freespace 2 is still, imo, THE best space sim I have yet played. The action was consistently exciting, the atmosphere was very well done, the way the ships flew and felt was better than anything I've played except for perhaps the IWar games, graphics were terrific for the time, and it had an extremely immersive storyline. I play this game through at least once a year still...No other game has replicated the thrill of watching a swarm of Hornets chase down and swallow up a speeding Shivan LF, or watching a gigantic juggernaut jump into the system. The sense of awe, frenzy, and anticipation is unmatched. Unfortunately, given the way FS2 ended, at this point there is no FS3 planned, due mainly to lack of commercial success with FS2, but also in large part due to FS's developer, Volition, being sold from Interplay to THQ (the license resides with Interplay).

Starlancer was OK. It didn't compare to the production quality of FS2, and the action grew repetitive. But it was decent enough to keep me playing now and again.

Freelancer so far is repetitive and a little flat, and the planet-side experience is woefully limited, but it redeems itself with a big universe, pretty graphics, a so-far-interesting story, and fun if simplistic combat. It's unforgivably missing several elements, such as the ability to own multiple ships, but what's there is pretty well-done, and will keep me occupied for a very long time (at least until Interplay decides to do FS3).

I can't believe no one mentioned Allegiance. M$ basically killed the game due to lack of support, but that was the best multiplayer space combat game I've ever played. It had bases, cap ships, stealth fighters and bombers (which required some serious finesse to survive in), drones, etc. It was a blast! Did anyone here play that?

Just so you know, Traveller, Star Trek never really had a 'space sim' game (I think Bridge Commander is the closest thing...), because it's almost ridiculous to make a space sim with those huge ships.

Marco, how did Freespace 2 get its story across? Definitely through missions, and definitely through cutscenes (how often did those show up?). Was there anything else?

You could do things with Star Trek.. it's just so many companies have screwed the pooch with Trek games that players instantly have a bad taste in their mouth. I'm actually surprised Elite Force has done as good as it has on the FPS front. It does have ships you could use for space sims. Although they might be big, starships are still fast and there are a lot of smaller vessels they could capitalize on.

I have Freespace 2 but didn't care much for it. I played it though twice, I think, and it has since just sat in amongst my pile of CDs. The first couple jaugernauts were scary and put alot to the game, but when you realize just how many there are I stopped caring. If I was that pilot - "Alpha 1", I think it was? - I would have said "screw 'dat" and just flown my ship into one of them to get it over with. I think they just killed the plot by going overboard.

I bought Alliegence back in the day, not realizing it was a multi-player game, and when I realized that, my better judgement gave way to insane anger (I was really looking forward to it) and I think I stabbed the box with nearby scissors or something. I was probably having a bad day and this was the icing on the cake. Anyway... it wasn't returnable and damage to the CD made it unplayable from that point on. Waste of money.

Well, Milo (John DiCamillo, the developer of Starshatter) set an approximate date of release sometime this year, I'm not sure exactly when, but I do know it's 2003, so it's not that far away if he can finish it in time.

I'll give props to Allegiance as well. What an excellent online game, a hundred or more people on at once and this was before the massive mulitplayer games that we have now.

I've been playing games in this genre since 1979 and I agree with most of your posts.

As for freelancer... I'm very pleased with it. I'd put it in a similar catagory of say, "Splinter cell" or "No one lives for ever" type games in that you have a series of missions that you need to accomplish before moving on. 'Cept with freelancer you get a whole lot more bang for your buck.

Bhurak, there were cutscenes, but they were few and far between. The vast majority of the story was told through the missions. Probably the most immersive, cinematic game I've played since...Half-Life, perhaps?

Rikaelus, that was one of the best aspects of the story, imo - the fact that we just don't kno, and likely could never realize, the full power of the Shivans. I can understand how it could be laughably ridiculous how imbalanced the power was, but for me it was tied to the game well enough that I had a tactile sense of the desperation. I was one of those really upset over the announcement of no sequel - mind-boggling considering the ending of FS2. But fortunately, FS2 has quite an active mod community.

I was very interested in Allegiance. I wasn't sure many people would have the patience for the depth of its semi-RTS gameplay. Is it still being played nowadays?

hey SumerNivek

you have basically written my space sim history for me! man I was reading that stuff and it was identical to how and what i played. awesome.

one thing though... I had a stab at iWar 1&2 and loved them both. Very immersive games with perhaps... true space physics??? travelling at FTLS also meant dropping down to a low speed to change course and avoid a planet or obstacle... annoying but realistic.

I tell you what though, if I could get hold of a copy of privateer 1, damn...

*** edit/ammend *** hot damn! I just found a place to download the full thing!!! yaahooooo! and the RF pack too! *** end ***

abandonware sites are great huh

So, I guess the general opinion is the game is good, but needs some work to become great, right?

Hey Kip,

No problem, man! I got into computer gaming at about the right time (1990) and have fond memories of those games, especially Wing Commander. Glad I speak sum up people's thoughts! =)

I got into computer gaming at about the right time (1990)...

Oh, a newbie...

Maybe in that case, I'm the old timer here... the first game I ever played was in 1975 - I was 11 & (omg) it was a space sim-RTS running on an IBM mainframe and our Jr. High had remote access + an IBM print terminal ....

It was a game based on Star Trek, where you had to type in the coordinates as well as the action you wanted to take when you arrived at those coordinates. Then the computer (controlling the Klingion vessel, of course) would do like-wise (i.e., turn-based), and the results (in the form of a graphic plot) were printed out on the print terminal .... The program was written in APL , btw.

Those of you who literally grew up with 17" of true color, HW-accelerated 3D & the WWW could not possibly phantom it, but we had the time of our lives with that mainframe & that game. Back then, it was cutting edge - hell, we didn't even have Asteroids !!!

But as you can see by my (original) post, old dogs can still learn new tricks

Last but not least, a few screenshots (of FL) I took last night:

Blown gasket
Time2go
Kaboom!

There full-sized (1024x768), ranging from 75K to 150K. I also used FRAPS to display the framrate, if your're curious...

@Travelller

If only we had today's technology then... I never would've left the house. I didn't play that exact Star Trek game, but do remember playing a clone of it written in BASIC . I also remember playing a flight sim called F-15 from Microprose. (back when they made decent games) To give you an idea of the graphics picture the ships in FL non-3d stick figures. The runways look like stick tri-angles and you will get a successful landing even if you do a nose dive into it. Realism - yeah right. You could land the bird on a carrier which an F-15's not designed to do.

Wasn't in the nice HW-3d acellerated cards with giga-hrtz rigs. You're looking at RGB colors with sounds from the PC-speaker. (yes those used to serve more purposes other than beeping during the POST) What's sad is that my daughter will probably play games in a VR environment and will laugh at the idea that we used see the action on a monitor. Me being an avid gamer though, I'll definitely be joining her in gaming in the VR world.

Thanks for the response, Marco, and thanks chigiri for clueing me in to the free Freespaces. I shopped around for them a while back, but couldn't find them.

If only we had today's technology then...

Speaking of which, here's the father of modern gaming , a space-sim* written in 1962, the one & only, Spacewar!

*Hey this 45-pages-of-code program even had a gravity model! And sicnce the terms arcade, shooters, etc. didn't even exist, we might as well dub it a space sim
