Brutal Deluxe: X2 will have a pretty good dynamic universe - eg npc's flying around, dynamic economy that drives npc ship actions, alien attack storyline and a lot of other good stuff.
BUT - in previous incarnations the combat AI was woeful. Also ships were slower, combat being very WW1 instead of the fast jet type combat of FL.
The pace was welcome, and fit with the X game world, but it therefore demanded a lot better AI than it had. Not sure whether it will be improved but you will be able to program the AI of your own ships and even the turrets of your current ship.
As it stands FL combat is much more exciting. X combat is more tactical - eg figuring out the best way to attack an escorted convoy rather than steaming in.
As I always say, on both boards, FL and X are different game genre's. X is a full on, life stealing open-ended sim, FL is an enjoyable action blast. There's room on my HDD for both.

RE:
"Even in recent interviews, the developers are talking about the product as if it was Morrowind in space. Well IVe spent half a lifetime in Morrowind, looking forward to BloodMoon, and I would advise them to be a bit more modest. If they would advertise the game for what it really is, it wouldnt be half as bad."
Agreed, 100%! It's been "hyped" and is still being "hyped" as as much more than it is. It's like they've forgotten about all of the stuff they "took out" of the game. I think that's responsible for at least 50% of the negativity regarding it.
I sincerely hope that DA/MS or the MOD community can put some of the things that were "dropped on the cutting room floor" back into the game!
Mainly, I'd just like to see the other ship upgrades added back in, more random mission variety and if at all possible, the ability to rent or own a hanger so that you could have more than 1 ship. For me, that would be enough to push it over the edge from being a "good" game to being a "great" game.
Some other minor things that would also help would be If they could throw in different base ship speeds and a minor change to the enemy AI, so that "enemies" won't break off from other battles to attack you if you come into the area where they are fighting (very unrealistic).
And for god's sake, please change trent's reaction when someone says "I haven't seen you before, are you new here?" from "Yup" to something else, when he's somewhere that he's been a half a dozen or more times before! That's very irritating! He could say, "No. I've been here before. We must have missed each other". Or something like that.
I'd be willing to wait for the "minor" things to be available in an expansion, but I'd sure like to see a patch or mod available to change the main things I listed.

Personally, I think FL is a pretty decent game. It may not be as in-depth as many were hoping, but, in the end, it sure is a lot of fun (for me anyway).
Also, I think the comparisons to Elite are somewhat misguided. I played the heck out of Elite and, quite frankly, Elite and FL are dang near the same game: combat and trading. To it's credit, Elite did boast a more dynamic economy, but combat in FL is a lot more entertaining and action packed. The universe in Elite was a lot more expansive, but at the same time, it felt a lot more "empty". You had tons of planets, systems, etc, but they were almost all randomly generated.
Personally, I'm hoping the MOD community can turn this into a real gem. A dynamic economy would be great addition -- make people do some research instead of simply milking the same route over and over and over again. I'd also like to see enemy ships boosted in strength (i.e. make their weapons do 25% more damage, or something).

Hrm, nice to see the FL community consists of the older peeps as well But really, I wondering what about the middle era? In the beginning there was Elite and MOO; now we have the likes of FreeLancer, X2, or even EVE to an extent.
What about those games like WC, FreeSpace1/2? Even though my age might seem pretty young to some of you older guys (17), space sims have always been my favourite genre of gaming. I 'grew up' during the times of XvT, Freespace, and the ends of WC. What is it about these games that's different than FreeLancer? You feel like you're PART of the universe.
FreeLancer is supposed to be a crazy mix of a SP story, combined with a 'living' universe that can exist in both SP and MP. When peeps say that FL's story is 'only 13 missions, but its very stretched out'; they're right. But, as many other peeps are saying, its simply a matter of getting some cash through those static missions and going onto the next story mission. The latter missions are a total joke in my opinion...
Right now I'd like to say 'yes', I've played those early-on games, but definately not as much and definately not as indepth as some of you. I can safely say though that trying to create a story for yourself through the universe in FL is next to impossible. Come on now, "are you new here?" "Yes, for the 158th freakin time".
If you can't create the story, then just follow someone else's.
Er, PS. FreeLancer is a great game, for what it is. It could have been so much more though.

A176, just the end of WC? Too bad, the first two were probably the best (I'll give ya WC III also, just because you blow up Kilrah). And also, Privateer 1 was in the Wing Commander Universe. Did you get to play that, or did you just play the crappy Privateer 2 game that took you out of the WC Universe? Everything with the Wing Commander label is great (even Academy...and Armada rocked!), so I suggest that you try them all out! =)

Elite was just about the first game i ever played on a pc, round my mates house on his BBC..i was hooked instantly, i had never believed something like that was possible, up to then i thought computer games were all like positron( remember that?) or at best starship command...and until i took my atari joystick around and pluged it in, keybord was the only option........but i was 14 at the time and elite was the best there was, i was bound to be impressed, things have moved on a bit, try playing elite now, ill bet you its not as fantastic as you remember( i tryed it a while ago..wish i hadnt).

Hi again ,
I believe many of you folks misunderstood my primary intention with this post, it definately wasnt to make Freelancer look bad. I just wanted to point out the expectactions I had, and wether you agree or not with some of the points that I stated every single person has certain expectations when they buy a game based on prior experiences..this is natural.
The use of simple coding to apply a decent wingman and some interaction with the rest of the world was built in one single floppy disk when Elite came out for the first time, so I didnt think it would be a difficult task to implement such features and thus the reason why I actually expected them in Freelancer. Maybe I dont know enough about coding or they way things work but expecting something is certainly everyones right.
Freelancer is very much enjoyable but my point is still valid, this game resembles more a shoot´em up with some easy space sim to satisfy the need for fast paced action which tends to be the flavor of the day...and still I would say that a mixing of genres is a rare sight now adays.
My title was based on some conversations with people at my age who mentioned exactly the same things in regard to Freelancer, especially Elite was chosen as the major comparison but as of many pointed out..expectations are individual and we shall never all be equally pleased.
However as stated before I am still enjoying Freelancer as more of an arcade game with some elements of exploration as a sparetime hobby , take care folks, hugs to ya all.
PS: Since I am not english native please pardon my errors.

Most people know Elite as that first Amiga version, which was pretty simple. Very simple.
To compare first Elite with Elite: First Encounters, is like comparing simple bicycle with fully outfitted Landcruiser. There is only common thing - wheels.
None of space games ever come close to Elite: First Encounters. Yes, it was buggy, but that was not a gult of developer but publisher. And that's why it didn't get into masses.
Speaking of Freelancer- that game doesn't sucks, but it doesn't deserve 9/10. Were is toooo much hype around it, but it's just a simple shooter, "Diablo in space" with elements of non-dynamic trading (no, there is no any economics there).
Isn't there some law for advertisement? Why Microsoft could place on box and on site so much about "Dynamic universe", "opportunities" but in real they are NOT in there?
It seems to me, that developers spend so much time on "real-time 3D character interaction" and spent a week for anything else.
