Roll ship in game?

I just have the demo so no instruction book yet or anything, and not a warez person. Is there any way to do barrel rolls with your ship or any cool maneuvers like that? Say I'm coming at a space station at an angle and want to roll to the right to be more aligned with it, I haven't found an easy way to roll left or right to keep going the same direction but be have yourself line up better with something. Is there some trick to this, all I can figure out how to do is move left and right, no way to roll in one spot to better line up on something.

slap yer space bar to go into the auto flight thing, then space again to leave it. best i've been able to find so far.

Hmm ok so go into manual flight and move towards something then throw on auto flight and it will roll the ship a bit? I guess I'll have to go experiment with it, thanks for the tip.

Same here fragilesheep, they really do need to put in a real roll key in a patch or something. The NPCs are clearly capable of doing it, so why can't we?

because you're auto-aligning with the map

Yeah I agree, it would be usefull if they set Q and E to left/right roll keys in mouse flight.

So how do you turn off auto-align? And even then - you only roll because you take a certain turn... it doesn't mean you can roll as you might in IW2 or FS2...

when you use your mouse to steer you have kind of un-autoaligned...you can roll your ship by taking your mouse and "swinging" it around the screen. rolling your ship wont do you any good though, so i dont see the point

*If you have a cat and a dog in the same house, will that be a problem? Of course not, you might just have solved world hunger*

There's no need to roll in space. Doesn't help you to turn in an airless environment, for one.

Docking automatically aligns you with the stations/gates, so unless you just don't LIKE being upside-down relative to the station, rolling isn't necessary. And turning off mouse flight will turn you over anyway.

Also, any dodging benefit from rolling was removed when they first put in the target leader, since it targets you on the middle of the very axis you're rolling on =T

And in most of the earlier games that people have praised over Freelancer for having rolling...well...their hitboxes were so big that rolling didn't even matter. So when they were deftly banking and rolling to avoid shots, it was all in their heads! =P

Rolling is the biggest gimmick of space games...

I didn't want to roll in dogfights to look cool, I wanted to roll when flying around and exploring to get better lined up on something in front of me I'm flying towards. Picture yourself walking with your head forced to the right side and looking sideways and you come upon a painting. You can only move your body left and right and not move your head up straight to see the painting the right way.

Oh, well that's easy. Select the object, then hit Go to (F2), and make sure mouse flight is off. You spin around and head straight to it, no big deal.

riiiiiight

cuz moving a ship in 3 axisesesses (like everything since the wright bro's plane) instead of 2 is just a way to justify putting that twisty feature on the joysticks.

The Wright brothers didn't fly in SPACE, did they?

All the ships in space games have side thrusters now (or something to that effect), so you can actually turn/rotate instead of banking and diving/climbing. They eliminated a step, be happy.

You could even think of it as rolling on a different axis...a more useful one when there aren't things like air and gravity around =P

Thanks for the Go To tip, that will work well enough I suppose.

There is an auto-level key which seems to toggle the auto-levelling, using this combined with the cut-engine key you can do some pretty cool stuff..
