Here's something you guys should try. It works great for me.

In a dog fight situation, go head on with enemy. Hit 'z' to disengage enemy. Manuever with mouse to target enemy, firing away at the same time. You will now drift... boost with 'Tab' and you can now track your enemy and boost on occasion when enemy gets further away. It's awesome. It's like 3D Asteroid! Works like a charm. Been able to take on tons of enemies without so much as resorting to a couple of shields. Also great for avoiding missles and mines.

There's no need to roll in space. Doesn't help you to turn in an airless environment, for one.

Actually, you can do very good torpedo runs by using roll to spiral towards a target without losing lock and combined with strafing you can avoid turret-fire and flak (when it exists) pretty easily as well...

Ive only played the demo, but a great tactic with seeker mines is to run straight at the enemy (they fly right at you on most of the missions) shooting your guns. Then as they get close release a mine or two and bank away. They fly past you and the mines chase and detonate (they normally run right into them), their shields get tasken down and they get damaged. Easy way to take on multiple enemies all charging you.

Doesn't the L button disable auto rolling? That way your ship wont roll back to it's normal position, right?

That is correct.. I use Q-W-E for roll.. W being the disabling of auto-centering.
