Say it isnt so

Having read through various forums and looked at the demo I have drawn the following conclusions about FL that I am hoping people will tell me I am wrong about.

Storyline
Only 13 Missions

Ship
No 3D cockpit(cant look out of the sides of the cockpit)

Trading
No Dynamic trading model(prices at each planet never change not even randomly)

Missions
They are all fighting orientated (kill this, destroy that)
No transportation of people missions
No delivery of special goods missions
No opportunity to take advantage of special situations (disasters etc) in order to buy low and sell high.

Please tell me I am wrong because without these all that is left looks like a simplified fighting rpg (Diablo or Dungeon Siege come to mind) certainly not a Space Flight or Space Trading simulation.

From what I've read I'd have to agree with your surmise.

I'm going to get the game anyway, but I'm rather hoping that there is going to be some kind of follow-up by the developers.

Here's hoping. They've listened to people in the past on this forum, no reason to believe they won't in the future.

As an avid reader of The Edge, I recognise the development difficulties in such a game, mainly the pressure to start seeing some kind of revenue for all the outlay. Once the work so far has been justified, I'm sure there will be some kind of 'add-on'. Hopefully they won't try and sting us too much for it unless it really is a major ADD-ON.

I would love to tell you otherwise, but I am afraid you have heard right.

Its not a bad game per say, but it sounds as if like many of us you were expecting something very dynamic and diverse like Elite, and its definately not that.

Alll the JOBS are a case pf go and blow up some ships and get money. Nothing more interesting than that> no passenger misions, no cargo missions, no variety at all.
Theres no dynamic markets ect either, so you cant exploit opportunism as a trader,

Its an ok game, but not what I hoped for..

You don't have to do mission 5 right after mission 4. After mission 3 I believe you are to do what you want? Care to smuggle? Go ahead! Do you want to kill bad guys? Be a bounty-hunter. Do you feel lonely? Explore the 48 systems! If you feel like playing another storyline mission? Go ahead.

Ok, I understand your concern. Well, so the trading isn't dynamic. This wouldn't be a reason not to buy the game for me.

The game is not a simulation. And not a trading simulation. I don't care to do some "simplified shooting" as you name it.

But you've only played the demo. The demo lets you play a minor part of the game. And you haven't played multiplayer. Just try that

"I was near the scene of another crime at the time, officer."

But to try that, you have to buy the game... isn't that like a Catch-22 of sorts?

I think their is some escort mission's and their are some assatination mission's! Yes you can trade will you get loot just trade it at commdites traders and you can be a traders I would think. Overall I think if you want to be a Priate you can if you want to be a BoutyHunter you can or be a Cop or Navy type person you can or be a Tradesman you can. So if the program offers all of this then you should not have any problems doing that just depend's on you and what type of Rep you want!

Only 13 Missions

And they are multipart, much like most other modern

cant look out of the sides of the cockpit

Did you play Elite? How much did you use it?!? Turret View is basicly the same, and side view is really not usable during combat anyway!

No Dynamic trading model (prices at each planet never change not even randomly)

In effect they could have made the prices random to some extend, but would it make much sense? Wouldn't people just launch and dock like creazy? Would they camp outside a station untill the pricing was right? Sounds like not much fun for me...

The random mission could have a great varity - yes! But makes that FL into a bad game? I think not! I personally hope for an expansion which is going to extend this part!

All in all we have a tendency to glorify our earlier experiences, like for instance Elite. Elite was by todays standards a very boring game, and would not by far have the success it had at the time. Just look at the games the Elite guys did afterwards... not that great in my book - sorry to say so...

"In effect they could have made the prices random to some extend, but would it make much sense? Wouldn't people just launch and dock like creazy? Would they camp outside a station untill the pricing was right? Sounds like not much fun for me..."

The FUN in trading comes from risk and opportunity. Take them out and it gets very dull. Its a risk gambling your all on getting a good price and hoping nothing goes w4rong in the market.

It was part of the great appeal of Elite, somthing people enjoyed.

Freelancers merket makes trading a dull repetatvive back and forwards always the same goods to the same places....

Not exactly fun after 20 runs is it?

Ohhh and Elite is STILL more fun than Freelancer if you mean longterm fun..
I have all of the Elite series and I still play them sometimes. Its fun for a long time because there is a lot more to do in them than there is in Freelancer and the worlds are dynamic.
Granted Elite could do with a face lifet, but Freelancer definately is not its successor

Stinger.

The point is that I HAVE. Not once not twice but 100 times. Why do you think I am getting weary of doing it?

You are right its great fun at first, but how many times can you do the same thing over and over without looking for some variety. I would have liked to take a change and done something other than fly back and forth shooting people along the way.

There needed to be more choices of missions or things to do when you cant be bothered floating back and forth seeling the same goods. Therre isnt even a markte risk, or opportuniny system to spice up the trade

Post Mon Feb 24, 2003 8:35 pm

basic solution (for me) i will not do the same thing over and over again! if i feel like trading ill do a traderun, if i can connect it with a mission great. i will try and do a bit of this and a bit of that. kinda "trading by chance" load up on goods when i am at a place its cheap and sell it if i per chance get to a system where i get more for it. Granted i too would have liked a more dynamic market but only in parts. because spending all your money on goods, travelling a long distance, dodging enemys and then arriving at the (what you have thought) high selling destination just to find out the price now sucks aint fun for me. but to everyone his own. after all we dont have to play what we don´t like right?

Have you guys ever looked at it this way? You are one tiny little fighter/freighter with maybe 1000 cargo units max. What do you think how much impact this small amount of cargo (have you ever noticed the big transports with 80000 cargo units on board?) has on the grand economic scheme? I say: none at all. You make some people happy and you earn money with it, but i don't think that these little selling/buying actions of yours have any influence on the market.

Well, how many freighters would you have to kill to influence the economy then - a dozen? two dozen? even ridiculously large numbers would still be doable for a person with determination (and time), not to mention the changes in freighter escorts, police/naval patrol routes and other things which such actions should engender. None of those things happen in-game.

sw,

have you actually played elite?

Post Mon Feb 24, 2003 9:24 pm

The static prices thing doesn't matter to me. Either way, I'm going to be at a station and look through each item to see where I can get the best price, then decide over profit versus distance. That doesn't mean I'm going to be going from Manhatten to New Berlin then back over and over. I'll take a 3 credit loss per item (over what I could get for it) to see a new system.

Stormtrooper Tactics 101: Okay class, repeat after me. "There he is! Blast em!" Very good.
