seeing as ive not stolen it im not a thief at all. one of the owners of the local lancenters in town let me play the game. ive no clue if its legit or warez untill i came here i didnt even know it wasnt in the store. i seen him playing it and asked if i could give it a whirl. i played for about 10 hours yesterday and about 8 today.

it says version 1.0 when you start it so i figured that was the retail version. ill ask wensday when i go back if its a preorder or warez or promotional demo. but reguardless someone giving you thier review on a game isnt a reason to bash em. they are simply stating what a majority are going to be stating when they get the game legit. did you see the flames for unreal 2?! dear god that game blew chunks and im glad i didnt buy it. or warez it .

there are those that resort to piracy simply because they can.. and there are others who resort to piracy because they are tired of paying 55.00 for a game that shouldnt be more than 20.00! developers ask us to show responsibility when they themselves show none.

What a shame. Let me get this straight McTurbo in sticking to you're analogy. What stops people from going out and killing their neighbor? They could in your example because "they can." But what stops them from doing just that? A sense of morality? Knowing the difference between right and wrong perhaps? Who's really showing some responsibilty here? I think it's my neighbor that doesn't shoot me every morning when I walk out the door. With that being said, what other examples can we all think of that we can do simply because "we can." Lame, very lame IMHO.

Oh so you played it once and you know whether its good or not? ROFL

Geez,

I kinda liked Unreal2. I have been playing the Freelancer PR beta for a week now.
I really like it also. Not to be overly critical of the guy who started the post and the others on his side, but you must be playing a totally different game then the one I have been thoughly enjoying. I look around and I see nothing out in it's genre to compare with. The single player game may have only 13 missions but you need to do a lot of side ones to complete it and you have the option to play afterwards. Multiplayer is in this game for sure and wherever did you get the idea it is not? This game has been vary stable for me, no crashes and load times are short and bearable. It even runs on my second computer( p2-350 with crappy ati 7200) and that is another complaint heard that gamemakers are ignoring the part of their audience who can't afford to upgrade. Kudos to microsoft and Digital Anvil.
Try and play just about any game out in the last 18 months that will play on this system other than harry potter! But it looks really great on higher sytems to boot.
Different people like different games that sums it up to me.

What kind of tactics does the Ai has in FL? So far all i see is one gets in front of you while the other 5 or 8 gets beyind you.And why the game sim when it feels more like a shooter? Why not space shooter, like that no one will get confuse.

Post Mon Feb 24, 2003 1:15 am

He's played it twice, for 18 hours, guy. I did 15 hours. In 2 sittings. Cuz it's fun, damn fun. Until you realize you've played the whole game, and there isn't any real incentive to continue. Which is a shame, and is most definately because this is a watered down version of something that coulda been great.

The thing is, everyone who is new to the forums IS giving negative reviews. Because we are the ones who have played the full game and have something to review. We're sorry your game isn't going to be a 10, but it was fun for a few hours.

And as for warez, don't pirate games kids! Unless you really want to, but then it's your own fault, and live with the consequences. Game makers should go out of business for making bad games, not because you stole their bad game. Lazy slackers. Get off my lawn!

Carver, you're speaking from my heart...

actually the people new to the forums and giving bad reviews are mostly trolls just trying to get a rise. As for it being watered down, you wouldnt know.

One more thing then i will shut up. The majority of the people on this board who have been playing some version or another have seemed to love this game- I couldn't list all the accolades on one or two or even 20 posts- read em yourself if you think I am making it up. Before I pre- ordered I read posts from guys like Stinger who had already played it for a while and could offer a "honest opinion" on what the game could hold in store for us. After reading your post I am truly wondering if you got a demo of Master of orion 3 or Dark Star or something else? A demo with one sytem and no multiplayer is not enough to post an "honest opinion".
As for me, multiplayer is the real shining star in this package and I am not dissapointed by a single thing i have seen yet- can hardly wait for the real thing and I am proud to say I will be a legit owner of it. I have never done the warez thing and never will. I read an article about a software pirate who burned and played all the games from the past year and complained none were worth his time and money- Ha! Why did he dl em then?

Disappointed

I apologize for thinking you had played a stolen copy of Freelancer. Your post tho made me feel like you were talking about the final version and not the demo. You should have said it was the demo you were refering to..in which case it would only be a review of a demo...not a worthy review of the game itself.

Well, Im glad I'm not the only one dissapointed. I've been following the game for a long time and am a fan of the genre. Maybe that's why I am so dissapointed. This game (at leat the demo) was missing so MUCH. Trending away from sim, towards 'hack n' slash' shooter with little or no ambience or atmosphere, inconsequential characters, a meaningless planet experience that is inexplicably unimaginitve. I wanted to land on a planet and oooh and ahh at the scenery, the people and details, to feel like it was a living breathing part of a bigger universe, yadda yadda you get hte picture.

No real economy or meaningful trade system... Lots is missing from this game and I think many fans will come to the realization that it's potential far exceeds its current state. I would have waited another 6 months or year for the be-all-end-all version but I guess they ran outta money after 4 years... Not sure what they spent the 4 years on to tell you the truth. My guess is they dumped content in an effort to get it into multiplayer.

But there is hope. Despite the dated graphics and dissapointing simulator perhaps expansion packs can breathe life into an otherwise meaningless universe.

Who knows, maybe the "full version" IS better, but I have doubts.

PS - why is everyone taking it so personally that some people aren't impressed with this game?

I seem to recall that the original Elite on my C=64 had a dynamic trading system. So if you sold goods on one planet, prices would drop and buying goods on another planet, prices would rise. A system like that would be very interesting in multiplayer, but as I have read, the prices are static... right? A static trading system would invite to make you repeat a high-income route, wouldn't it?

And as a new user of this forum, I'm a bit annoyed that the older users seem to bash everyone who doesn't praise the game over everything else. Could it be that you've waited so long for this game so that if this game is a disapointment - that it would be too much for you to handle? Right now it's a little bit of "The Emperors new clothes" in this forum. "What faults, there are no faults! If there are faults you're a stinking Pirate!" - you know who I mean.

It's only a game for Pete's sake, not a religion. Or maybe that's where I'm wrong?

A static trading system would invite to make you repeat a high-income route, wouldn't it?

You would be correct. That is the problem with a static economy. You just figure out which run yields the best profit and away you go. It never changes and will always be the best run.

Now, the thing is you have to find that best route and there are a bunch of stations, so it would take a bit to have visited them all, but once you do, you permanently know the price. At least the game doesn't make you write down all the prices and instead you just click on a commodity, click on the Trade Route button and you are given a list of all the prices that your known stations will buy it from you. You just find the best price (it says Best known price right next to it) and fly to that place to sell.

With a dynamic economy, your successful trade routes would always change depending on supply and demand, so it invites you to keep revisiting stations to find out what the current price would be. I wish this game had this. However, the lack of a dynamic economy doesn't bother me near as much as basically having one goal to random missions: Kill, kill, kill.

The only thing that dissappoints me is No trade or trade escort missions. In Privateer, it was a great way to get paid to explore. Would also be great if there were player created missions posted on the Job board for what system they are in/going to.... to make up for the lack of trade/escort missions. Would also help clans form. All types of missions: Trade, bounty, escort, PK, etc. Oh well, maybe in ver. 1.1 patch, hehe. Would also be great if player clans could be treated like factions and a rating on them shown in your player statistics.

I'd rather see this thread turn into a wish list the Dev's would read, rather than a DIS list they will ignore completely.

Truthfully,

I have played the PR beta till Mission 9 and the AI does not improve. The enemies just get better equipment/ships and increase in number.

My original review stated the repetitiveness of the missions for a particular of job class. The missions are not varied enough as mentioned.

If people are bored of the game already, let me tell them it doesnt get any better except for the SINGLE PLAYER game which adds the twist in the plot and gameplay. The SP game has escort missions etc. This a case of Quantity vs Quality. In the end FL has more Quantity and the Quality ends after the SP game.

Anyway, for people who have been waiting for a long time, I hope it lives up to their expectations. For me, I am gonna go buy MoO3. From what I have read it requires more brain cells and is far deeper. Peace.
