Iron Monkey, no one wants to hear you defend your actions. I think it's great you get to play the game before it comes out. However, you should still buy the full version when it comes out. It doesn't matter how rich game developers are. (And they aren't, really.) All that matters is that if Freelancer succeeds money-wise, then new space-sim games in this vein will continue to be produced, and we'll get to continue playing them.

If we all did what you did, then the space-sim genre would be even more dead than it already is. Creating and selling games is a business, just like anything else. They need to sell the product to make the money to fund further ventures.

I know I wouldn't like it if I invested over 4 years of my life developing something, and then just as it was about to go on sale to the public, someone leaked a free copy and no one bought it from the store, and then because it sold so poorly, no matter how fantastic the game was, I wasn't allowed to make a sequel because it wouldn't be profitable.

Ok, they screwed up I get that. This attitude of "I have this beta for $5 so I won't buy the full version", that some people are taking is pretty messed up too. But how are we ruining the game for ourselves by getting this beta? I fully intend to buy the full version, would you be saying I ruined the game for myself if I won the contest? I haven't touched SP so the story will be preserved for when I get the retail. In about 2 weeks the demo will be out. Are those people that download the demo then ruining the game for themselves? I think some of you are being a little harsh on the people that got this beta. I've been waiting for this game since it was announced. I don't think that having an incomplete version of the game 2 weeks early is going to kill the experience for me.

Anyway, I don't have kazzaa but I use WinMX, if I find out someone there has a version of the game how do I go about reporting them? Can't have this thing getting spread everywhere and hurt game sales.

DOH! I guess if I read more carefully I would have seen that. Thanks

I think as Bargib said, send email to [email protected].

Iron Monkey, the build they released cannot be final. If you don't buy the game itself, you will not be able to play multiplayer, and didn't they put a limit in the storyline?

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 8:13 pm

Yeah, according to the manual that came with it, you can't get past story mission 10.

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 8:59 pm

Guys,

the hacker community proabably is working around the mission limit as I speak. All I am saying is that isnt it my choice what I do? Ok I understand the issue that the developers worked on the code for 4 years and suddenly due to a blunder, the code was released. The developers are gonna be ticked off. But thats not my fault. Its life. If I get 95% experience of the game for $5, you want me to spend $45 for the 5% experience of the full version. How do you justufy that? Its not a moral issue. I got the beta legally. I didnt hack into any server. Get my point. I would have bought the full game if it were not for the beta. Thats all I am saying. I am not justifying what I am doing. I am just explaining the situation.

IM: Lemme me put it this way: do you think the game is worth 50$? Shouldn't you then pay what is due, even while somebody makes a blunder? YOU might not legally be obliged to do so, but I think you are morally...

Also if yu want Space Sims to have a future, FL needs to be a hit and supported well by the customers - eg the buyers... You are basicly taking the game for a free ride, and it is in my book just slightly above "stealing" it, eg. playing a warez version...

Hell... I'll propably have a bunch of copies, but I'll go out and BUY a copy anyway!

Guess IM's not as impressed with the game as we are...have fun with it ...I hope you have to upgrade to the full version to be able to play MP when the full version comes out...

Not to get too philisophical about it but it comes down to a difference between Ethics and Morals.

Ethically, as defined as the system of rules by which we live, in return for all the hard work that DA put into the game, we have to fork over the $50 to get it.

Morally though, as defined by the personal rules by which we define ourselves, we can pay as much or as little as we want.

Personally, when I think of all the hours I will play, probably well over 100, that's less than 50 cents an hour I paid for the game. I used to be able to earn that much when I was 8 years old by helping Dad with washing the car or some odd job. So IMHO the "I'm too poor to afford it" argument doesn't hold water. If money's really that much of a problem, ditch the broadband, sell the computer and find entertainment out playing ball. PC Gaming is a luxury.

So I-M, your choosing only pay $5 for the game may not be "wrong" in your point of view, according to your morals. However it IS WRONG according to our society's point of view. Basically, your choice of inaction (ie: planning on not purchasing the game) is akin to stealing the game. If you are comfortable with that, well there isn't much anyone can say or do about it to change your mind.

However, next time you hear anyone mention "unethical conduct" on TV in reference to some action that you think is wrong. Well, now you know exactly what they are talking about.

Well, let 'em do it. But if i some day meet someone who is complaining that there are no good space sims anymore and i find out that he only copied Freelancer but didn't buy it, i'm gonna smack him right in the face. I'm serious about that.

"Basically, your choice of inaction (ie: planning on not purchasing the game) is akin to stealing the game."

No its not. I am playing the BETA that I bought for $5. How is that akin to stealing? Since its not even the GOLD version. But I will buy the GOLD version. Haha. I was testing you guys out. Its good to see some GOOD people out there in the world ;-)

Post Mon Feb 17, 2003 1:46 am

Suuuuuurrrre you were testing us out, Iron Monkey. Every other person on this board was going to buy the retail version, no need to "test" us.

Post Mon Feb 17, 2003 2:01 am

IM,
That has got to be the crappiest attempt at saving face I have ever witnessed in my entire life.

Post Mon Feb 17, 2003 2:06 am

Oh God. I know it sounds corny. But I really am gonna buy the game. See ya all in Multiplayer.
