PATIENCE

Hi all,

Having followed this game for oh so many years, though only recently been posting here, I've decided to start this thread for those of us who HAVE NOT played the apparently prolific EB/GAMESTOP/WHEREVER version that's running around.

When it was just the PR release to a few, such as our mods, that was great. They limited the amount of spoilers and info getting out. The anticipation was on fire.

However, maybe it's just my humble opinion, but as more and more people get the "retail beta" or whatever you want to call it, the questions are getting more and more specific. It's annoyingly easy to find on the net now.

So the question is, are you going to give in to the "retail beta" or wait for the real thing?

I'll open the debate. Personally, when I start FL, I want the storyline, the planets and as much as possible to be fresh. I don't want to know wherte to go to get this or that. I'll know some from here and there and what I read, but my first sight of the opening cinematic will be the first time I suit up and launch to make my fortune.

So here's to the Release Date, and the first time I see FL in action.

What are your opinions?

AFAIK no more beta's will be availalble through GameStop. I don't think in the first place they where meant for wide-spread distribution, but on the other hand I do hope the people that have it now are enjoying themself, will tell their friends how great Freelancer is, and buy the final version.

Unfortunally I've also heard that it is available through Kazaa, and even while I might have some understanding for the people that feel MS has to much cash at hand, they definitly will not get any big income from Freelancer, and I therefore ask ALL OF YOU to report any warez version found to [email protected].

I believe if we as fans EVER want any large scale funded space-sim again, Freelancer HAS to make well on the market.

Else only smaller developers will put out games in this genre, and even while the games they do might be OK, they don't have the depth of a Privateer or Freelancer.

Thank you sir. Well said, FL has to do well if we want more of these games.

It's good to know that the release wasn't meant to be a release at all.

Well im in Australia, so I don't really have much choice but to wait it out.

I've pre-ordered a copy at my local EB and am kinda thankfull i'll be playing the finished product, instead of a buggy beta build. But I can't blame the guys who have managed to get a hold of a PR copy, I think it would probably be a little bit to tempting for me to. It is a frustrating period when you have a group of haves and have nots, but I think most guys outside of the US should be pretty well much used to it by now. Especially the guys in Europe who usually end up last in line.

The one thing I do hope is that the people who have the PR copy keep the spoilers in the spoiler forum. I sure don't want to know about anything specific, i've already been partially spoiled by one lacklustre reviewer.

Kivuli and Mustang..

I agree with you guys. I have stopped reading some posts even in here. Some of the stuff being discussed is revealing too much for my taste. I think it was good the beta was released for the purposes mentioned by Bargib. But I am glad not to have the PR...and have not even tried to get one. I am also very careful what posts I read anymore. So far..the game has not been spoiled for me..but it was very close a couple times. Bargib is right..Freelancer needs to sell well so we can have a expansion! I for one will be posting and telling everyone who likes to play computer games how great Freelancer is.

I'll admit I went to several stores looking for a copy of Freelancer. But since none of them have one, I've given up and decided to wait it out. The urge is intense to continue seeking, but I've given up. All I want now is my rightful FL shirt from Elec. Boutique for Preordering. I can't wait to play a polished gold version when it comes out. Although my girlfriend got me tickets to go see Coldplay the same night, so I guess I won't be playing it that much the day it comes out.

In my opinion any of the people who just went out to try to fing the Pr Beta are ruining it to themselves, and the morons who uploaded the file to KaZaa are completely screwing microsoft, if the game doesn't sell well than there most likely won't be any more big space sims, so in reaction to the KaZaa thing im going on a Warez hunt on KaZaa to expunge this foolishness, these people are not going to ruin our space sim-playing future.

Just Kidding, but if i run across any i WILL report them, SO, don't be dumb enough to do anything such as uploading the beta to KaZaa

First of all. Its not our fault. Second the Beta is not buggy. It doesnt have some of the final touches. I think this BETA was one of the GOLD candidates. As far as MICROSOFT is concerned, I dont have much sympathetic cord with them. DA on the other hand has been hurt. I think DA should sue Microsoft for this blunder. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I love my beta. For $5 i get the full game. You guys are snobbish.

"For $5 dollars I got the full game"

That's the kind of attitude that hurts DA in the long run, not Microsoft shipping out a few copies of a beta to select retailers. I assume by that comment you aren't going to buy the full retail version. Shame on you.

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 6:25 pm

You bet I am thinking about not buying the game. And why should I. Hey its life.

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 6:25 pm

I'm waiting for the real deal, the final public release. I also pick and choose what threads I read and even what pictures I look at. I don't want to have already seen all of the good eye candy before I play the game.

I'm not complaining about the posts and the pictures, just picking my way (just like I will when I play the game).

What I'm waiting to hear about is a "Gold Edition". Autographed by DA? With T-shirt? With whatever else might make it special.

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 6:29 pm

Yeah that 45 dollars you dont spend wont make Microsoft even blink, but it can cripple DA's chances of developing another masterwork like FL.

Yeah you're really raging against the machine there.

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 6:32 pm

Alright so reading everywhere on threads it seems like those "retail beta" copies weren't meant to get out in the first place. Good to know, but poor form on the part of some individual retail stores in giving them out.

I sympathize somewhat with the "Microsoft has too much money anyway" viewpoint, but as said its only the developer DA that's going to get hurt. End result, no more space sims, since they're not profitable. Publishers just won't pick them up, and we'll have another huge lapse of no decent space sim games.

But getting back to the issue of not playing the game until it comes out. I still go with my whole "1st time is gold" view.

I dont think DA's going broke. Microsoft has already payed them their due. They probably are moving on to a new project. Developers are more rich than you think. Noboby works for free.

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 7:12 pm

MS OWNS DA! SO MS get's to decide what DA develops to some degree. And MS are the only funding several simulations that I know of...

All the rest of the publishers have more or less given up on the space-sim genre...
