Heh mustang, yeah i was soo damn bussy playing this game.. hours a day.. seriously

@Clutch: your fist post: In the beta we tested ther where a few different type of missions, this is a cut out of my upcomming article:

-Missions
Completing missions will have an effect on your reputation, the people who you are doing the mission for will like you more,
but the ones that you are killing to get the money will start to hate you. Missions can be obtained in the bar on a planet or
station, from the job board or just the people standing around in the bar. There are a few different missions to choose from:

- Clean Up Missions
- Assassination
- Arrest
- Base Destroy
- Destroy Cargo

A clean up mission is basically a mission where you fly to a designated area and kill all the targets there. Assassination
requires you to take out 1 person, these are generally hard because the target brings lots of friends to defend himself.
In arrest missions you have to blow up someone’s ship and tractor their escape pod. Base Destroy missions require you to
take out space stations or just simple weapons platforms, which are supported as usual by a large number of fighters. Finally
we have the cargo destroy mission, that is where you have to kill some one that has some stolen or hazardous materials and
then destroy the cargo.

just thought i would drop by, seeing as the NDA is lifted. am i allowed to say who the TLR testers were? i dont see why not...

me, bargib, stinger, tach, EB, mad dog and boscoe

in answer to a couple of your questions:

PvP - player-killing is set on a server-by-server basis - some servers will have a little icon that shows that they allow player killing, other servers will not have the icon, which shows that it is not possible to kill other players

the variety in random missions is, i would have to say, the most disappointing aspect of both the SP and the MP game. there are really only the following types:

go and destroy this group of fighter
go and destroy this factions base
go and kill this guy and blow up what he is carrying
go and blow up this guys ship and bring back his escape pod

i would have liked to see a few more that werent so combat oriented - perhaps:

escort this convoy from here to here
take this object from here to here
ferry this passenger from here to here
go and locate an object hidden here (a lost passenger liner in an asteroid field for example)

it would just add that little bit more to the SP and MP experience

i dont mean to make FL sound bad - it isnt, and you will soon discover that it isn't

I will definitiely second Boscoe's remark about Digital Anvil reacting to the posts on this site. They were here more often than most could imagine. That monumentous effort (they worked loooooong hours) shows in the game. This community will have a lot to be proud of because it contributed so must to the soul of Freelancer. You'll soon see the months of bickering and debating here paid dividends.

i focused my testing largely on the single player aspect, mostly because a) i live in australia and arent online at the same time as most of the other testers, and b) there aren't any australian servers, so i get pretty bad lag

i have to say, the SP storyline is FANTASTIC! complete with twists and turns and unexpected "oh my god" moments. some parts of the storyline do get a little repetitive, as you are on the run from base to base for a large part of the storyline, but this never proved to be a problem. you guyz will love single player

that said, i did play MP quite a lot also, and MP is awesome! its great fun to get in groups of 3 or 4 people, fly around together, defend each other, accept and complete missions, split the reward and upgrade individually

Well...who knows, maybe they'll introduce more missions in future patches etc. Sounds great though, but I wont be reading the "walkthrough" till after Ive had planty time to get to grips with the game...nothing like having it spoilt before you even installed it

amen stinger! i wanna add my pwn appreciation for the work done by the DA staff - FL had a LONG development cycle and LOTS of delays, but the DA team stayed motivated. it would be so easy, after all that, to just lose hope, try to get it out of the door and move onto something else, but the DA team were committed to making a QUALITY game, and they have certainly achieved that goal. there werent afraid to put in the time and effort it needed, even if it meant delaying the game AGAIN and incurring the wrath of many a devoted fan. they never lost hope and never gave up - and it shows

congrats DA - thnx for the opportunity to test the game and thnx on behalf of the gaming community for raising the bar for the genre of open-ended space sims

I have just viewed some of the really old videos and noticed two things i liked, but which are not shown in the more recent vids:

1) Nebulas
In two of the videos there is a scene showing the player attacking a Kusari ship inside a nebula, which looks rather cool. You could fly through 3d clouds and it had really nice lightening effects and limited viewing range pretty much like in freespace 2. Are such nebulas still included? In the last videos and on the screenshots it seems like asteroid fields and coloured backgrounds have replaced those nebulas, they do not look as dense as before. Is this the case or are such nebulas still included?

Nebulas still included, and to be honest, in the last build we got they literally came to life with multiple sounds. This might be the best late addition in the game IMHO. Hard to really explain the effect, but as you go through them, it's like you're passing through soup that is alive. Some nebulas have little rocks in them, some have asteroids, (some are minable), some are just nothng but gas. Some have radiation (taking it's toll on the shields and hull). Some are like flying through puffy white clouds. Some announce "sensory reception reduced" and you're flyin' blind so to speak. Good for hiding from enemies!! Some have some really weird effects too like little patches you see ahead that are slightly different colors than the rest of the nebula and they explode if you run too close to them (I called them farting nebulas..) This takes it toll on your shields as well!

2) Starship Animation
2nd, the old vids show effects like the liberty elite fighter spreading its wings in an animation or a rheinland fighter movings its wings like an X-Wing. Are these effects still included or have they been taken out?

Taken out, sorry

How's the games atmosphere. I can remember Privateer.
I played it for hours and hours and the games atmosphere just sucked me into the cockpit of my centurion.
It was awesome. And i suffered with every hit my baby took.
Do you REALLY get involved in the game ?

I got involved in the game like no other...even Privateer! Can't explain why, it just su cked me in like no game ever has

i feel very satisfied that the fans here at tlr made such a difference. Now i'm starting to feel the tears. I first joined TLR 2 years ago and never a better community have i found online. I have to thank Bargib especially along with the rest of his 1st class team. I can't imagine how our debates would sway the outcome of the game and that we contributed in such ways... WOW...

What's all this about cockpits? Are u talking about 1st person view? What am i missing?

Another question for stinger:
If i run a dedicated server here the information of my character+ship is all stored on MY personal machine right? I can use this character on another server? You said something about shutting down and rebooting - you have to use the same name or something?

Yes if you play on your own server it retains your progress. You can not use that saved character on another server, you have to work your way up through the ranks like everoyne else. The shutting down and rebooting was in regards to the use of a LAN connection, which unfortunately, I'm not experienced with it's effect too much in RL, but I know how the software reacts. It saves whatever characters are created on that particular server

Where is the info stored and what happens if the server crashes temporarily?

The characters on a server are stored within the save game areas of the install. Don't mess with them, that renders them useless. (sounds like I tried that huh?) If the server crashed (not the PC running it), then the server admin just starts it right back up (if they're at the computer) and all characters are still there in all their glory. If the computer itself crashes...all bets are off!

dense nubulas - still included and much the same as they were in the videos you described. there are nebulas, asteroid fields, ice clouds etc. and plenty of them

aircraft animation - i didnt notice any aicraft animation in the game. it certainly isnt possible to manually retract or extend your wings, and i didnt even notice it in any cinematic cutscenes. i guess they just didnt make it in

i confess i never played the privateer games, but i shudder every time i hear the metallic clunk of laser fire on hull. the atmosphere is some parts of the game will blow you away. one area in particular springs to mind - an area called the badlands. deep shades of purple, dense gas clouds, jagged chunks of rock drifting around and the occasional flash of bright lightning. very eerie indeed

Gold, Gold, Gold And soon to be Game of the Year..

Thanks to all the testers for what sounds to be a classic.

This is how all games should be developed.

Q. Did the mines get changed in the final version??

Mines are the same as described previously

how much to spend the night with Juni ?

You can't earn enough credits for that...I tried

sorry - juni is not for sale
as for mines, im not sure what you mean by "changed". they are basically balls with long spiky bits sticking out. and i can tell you right now, they hurt like hell!

i cant help but recall a time when tach and i were flying in formation with stinger through a mine-field. stinger was in control and me and tach were just being dragged along behind. a small navigational error on the part of stinger (he is still to prove that it wasnt his fault) sent tach, then myself, and finally stinger flying headlong into mines. we all died

sorry stinger - it was a long time ago i know, but i stil havent fully forgiven you

ROTFLMAO!!!! On ya Stinger!!

Post Sat Feb 08, 2003 3:28 am

Stinger, i asked this question before, and there seemed to be some debate over whether there was cloaking devices in the game or not. Do they exist in the game?

None i've seen in MP
