Joystick - yes I know!

If the mouse control system is so good will Microsoft put their money where their mouth is and release a demo so we can try before we buy?

Andi.

Yeah i think theer bringing one out just before Freelancer comes out. But from what ive hurd the mouse is sound.

I am a hardend joystick fan {oooeer}, but after some investigation on the mouse
control system it realy sounds good.As for a demo, its pointles for me because
im going to bye fl without trying the demo,i do'nt want to dilute the experience
of playing fl for the first time .

In Electric Brain's, Tach's, and Boscoe's fan interview with the gentlemen at DA they said there would be a demo released before the game is released. You can then "try before you buy" but as someone else said, I feel convinced in the control scheme of Freelancer.

In almost every preview I have seen, the editor liked how the controls are. I don't think there is anything to worry about.

yeah i havn't seen one preview where the previewer said that he missed the joystick in FL, the fact is (and we have beeten this to death) that joysticks are not necesary. End of story.

I have read in every review that the mouse control works very well.
And, I am very sure that for 99.999% of the players it will be very easy to adapt to, even for die-hard joystick fans.

I am still worried though.
But, the only reason I am worried is for my own personal problems.
I have broken almost every bone in both my hands at least once. (Used to be a "fighter".)
So, trying to control even simple games using a keyboard & mouse is very difficult for me...my fingers just can't hit the right buttons in time, and my hands get sore after only a few minutes...even merely typing makes them hurt to be honest.
This is one reason I cannot really play many of the games I would really enjoy playing, due to the interface restrictions and my inability to properly work "the controls".

I will still buy Freelancer.
And, I have no doubt I will enjoy it.
And, I do not expect a game designer to add functions just to make the game playable for the other .001% of players that may also have troubles like this...that is just unreasonable.
But, I highly doubt I will last very long in a dogfight against anyone in a multiplayer game...which is a big part of what I look forward to in Freelancer. Looks like I will have to hire "Human" wingmen to cover my back in multiplayer! Hehe

From what I have read, and seen in the movies, the mouse controls work very well, and I have even defended DA's choice regarding them to many of my "die-hard joystock fan" friends whom have said they wouldn't get them game with no joystick controls....thier loss if they want to be that stubborn, but they are not playing it at my house all the time after they realize how wrong they were! LOL!

I just wish they would release the demo soon...so I can see just how sore my stubby little fingers will be after trying to play it for 30 hours straight! HEHE!

I wonder if a track-ball instead of a mouse would be good. Any thoughts from PR/CD recipients??

It's funny you say that Dredd, because my trigger finger kills after using a joystick for longer than half an hour. I have no-idea why it just does.

Somehow my whole hand hurts when I play SL with joystick . Maybe because I get frightened and sqeeze the stick untill the plastic melts?

Post Wed Feb 05, 2003 2:48 am

my hand hurts after i use the joystick too (its probably the 5 hour sessions)

Post Wed Feb 05, 2003 3:22 am

Well, back to the original question, I actually doubt that there would be a joystick in the future - it'd probably be some new interface that lets one control things a little better, and multimanage things better.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Why make your own mistakes when someone else has already made them for you?

Her's a thought though. I play alot of driving sims as ell space and flight sims. My THrustmaster FF wheel installs as a fully flexible (in terms of keyboard mapping) HID (Human Interface Device) in device manager. I wonder if we could use such a device and map out the mouse controls to some other interface device.

Perhaps, but it would be pretty crappy. It'd be something like RA2 than a "wing commander" interface.
