Where now? Want your advice

right, Youve probably seen my thread on FL2. well, im holding out for FL2 but im gonna occupy my time till then.

Was just gonna say, im new to the genre (space flying games) and i thaught FL was very good. in fact me and my friend loved it. Alot of you guys seem to be "Vets" so to all of you.....

What other games should i look at. i liked FL and i know theres nothing like it. but maybe theres another game out there that might do. What do you guys reccomend?. Keep in mind that i did like the simplicity and gameplayability of FL and preferebly i dont want anything to geeky (techincal). I liked the fact that you could trade and stuff instead of just fighting and just plain exploring was fun as well. what other titles should i looks at?

Perhaps Starlancer?, what else?

Here are some good ones:

Tacyon: The Fringe
X2: The Threat <=== This may be hard (geeky as you call it)
Freespace 2 <==== A veterans game, the classic Space shooter

Well those are all of the good ones I can remember. You may need to buy FS2 off ebay since they don't sell it in shops anymore.

Yeah i have got X2-The threat, i got it Exactly because it looked similar to FL. it is quite hard as you say, but ill give it another go when i finish my HSC

Thanks for the advice. Any more?

I'm kind of new to this forum...well..not really...I was on under a different name really...the same ...but different at the same time.
Anyway...
Some other good games are:
X² the threat -
Kind of hard in the beginning...but worth it. Dogfighting can be easy or hard...depends on the level of the AI you happen to be up against at the same time. Also there is trading in the game with a working economy...something that isn't always included in some games. Oh... and lots of eye candy...LOTS of it.
Like I said...it worth it. Excellent game.

Independence War II
-the edge of Chaos -
Another good game by Particle systems Whom I'm very familiar with.
The original (Independence war I & Defiance) may or may not work on WinXP.
It was designhed in the erra of the 3DFX...which as everyneknows is defunct now in place of OpenGL.
Its a good game though. The website also has mods to download. If you purchace this game, you might want to know that there is a very slight bug in the game.
One of the systems for a "side" mission was spelled wrong. There is a fix for this on the website though. The one in particular actually allows MODS and the like to be added without trouble. Ind of like the FLMM but for Independence War. Its called F14 patch I believe...can't remember really its been a while since I had to download the patch. But its a goodgame ll around. Also...before I forget. With the F14 patch, the game becomes open ended instead of ending after the last mission.
The flight dynamics are a little difficult at first, but after a few runs and pirating...you'll get the hang of it. Its a very vast universe...and in the beginning...you can't leave the Sector/system (Cluster??) you begin in, butafter you complete a few missions, you can eventually get money for a jumpdrive/engine and can leave. The missions are really good and the story line isn't bad either. The cutscenes are excellent as well. A game you might enjoy alot.

Battle Cruiser Millenium-
This is a game that takes a long time to play, but it plays in real time. The graphics look like someone hijacked them from the late 80's early 90's, butthe game works great either way. It runs in real-time and the damage a ship takes take a long time to repair.
This game is for someone that likes to take their time playing and exploring.
There is also a sequel for this game called Universal Combat. Basically the same game with better graphics and all the updates for it.
If you get BC Millenium, I strongly suggest going to the website and looking up the patches that might be there for it. They are very good at repairing what damage there was to the game when it was released earlier than it was supposed to be. Thus the reason for all the patches.
Even though it needs (or may need) patches to get straight, its a good game.

Someone has already mentioned Free Space and Tacyon...so I won't get into them.
Both are decent games though...and I have Tacyon...but not Free Space...can't seem to locate it anywhere LOL.
Thats all I can think of ATM.
I'm sure that there are ithers here that have heard of a few games that I haven't.
Good hunting though. Even thought there may be a game that isn't mentioned here that someone knows about doesn;t mean it doesn't exsist.

Little mods Edit: Warchild, no offense about this, but this site doesn't use that kind of code (whether its BBcode or something else I will leave in the middle), the way to post pictures here is:

{img=URL of the picture} replace { with [ or click edit on this post to see how I did it, also a nice reference would be to check our little Forum FAQ, Thank you for your time.

this is OT if i'm not mistaken

Hmmmm, I think this doesn't really qualify for Off Topic, as its essentially a question about Freelancer and other Games, so I'll leave it here for the time being.

@Warchild, the reason I edited your post was to show you how these Forums handle picture posting, again, to see how I did it exactly, just click the edit button above your post and you'll see how I did it, thank you for listening.

No worries, I just thought that was the way to post it. LOL Sorry about that. No offence taken. I am a little new here. I've posted before but under the name (/\)archild...some forums tend to not like the Stylized "W" so the account was probably dropped ages ago. But thank you just the same. Knowing is half the battel won.
IIRC I'm not supposed to post the logo with every posted message either... I think I got yelled at for that a long time ago...or perhaps it was elsewhere...hard to rtemember with old age setting in.
Again, thanks for the help.
Cheers

Well, you can play other games, ooooorrrr, you can take up modding and create your own mod for freelancer. A challange worthy for any.

Hi, just reposting to see if I got this right. and to thank you mates again for the help with the pic thingy. I'm used to posting elsewhere with BBS code. Its hard to get out of the habit really.
Also.....
Something I did want to ask though. I have been playing for a while and some one asked me if it was possible to ignore the missions for the story line and kep gaining levels. I never really tried it so I couldn't answer accurately. I know in the multiplayer/single player no story line you can just keep going as I tend to play this alot. But when it comes to the actual story line, its been a while and I can't remember. I did refere htem back to this site, but I don't think they actually posted here to ask that. Just thought I'd help a mate out is all...nd gain some knowledge myself rather than giving the impression that I couldn't be bothered.
Cheers

Addrenilene keeps me in the game...with addrenilene you don't even feel the pain...wilder than your wildest dreams...when your going thtrough extreams..... Its just addreniline.

Well, there is the OPTION of getting an older 'puter & play the IMMHWO games that got this all started. And that is Wing Commander & the original Privateer or PII the Darkening. IF fortune smiles upon you there is the possability of stumbling across a copy of the Kilrathi Saga; which is WC 1-3, ported to windows. PII does have a WIN port that came out as a Deluxe version. Someone wrote a script which permits PI & some WC to run on WIN systems. Have not tried it but heard that it works good.

There are also 2 WC fan projects {one recently completed} which have been well received.

If you get a computer to run older games Mantis is a fun little romp if you can find it.

But I know this is a ll specious as it is unattainable but it is an answer to your question.

Tach is not too bad. Freespace 1 & 2 make for a fair bit of fun. I was never ever able to get far in X-2 but it is quite pretty {found it boring because it seemed all did was take forever to fly from one place to another & never seemd to make enough coin}. Homeworld looks good but even with patch was not able to get it to run.

There are a couple on the horizon that look worth waiting for.

It is hard to fly with turkeys when you soar with eagles.

Tachyon is an awesome game!! its only problem is that it is to linear you can't just fly around and do what ever, you have to choose a mission. Another game I really want to play and is supposed to be like FL but better is Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed I have looked at screenies posted on the official site and the space sectors look omicronish and the ships are suppposed tobe VERY upgradeable, but there are only 15 or so ships but other wise its really cool, oh the other problem is you have to have Galaxies and you can only play on-line

I am cold, I am fear, those who know me hate me, I am DEATH!

@eagle, I have Kilrathi Saga. SO Nah-Nah. Just Kidding.

Anyway definatly try Privateer. It's what FL was based on, and both were design by Chris Roberts the Sim God. You can get it here
Plus, theres a CD-RIP of Kirathi Saga there. You'll probably need DOS-BOX to play privateer though.

Anyway, I also like the X-Wing Series:

X-Wing
TIE Fighter
X-wing versus TIE Fighter
X-Wing Alliance

TIE is one of the best around. Great Storyline.

Anyway hope this gives you something to play around with.

At Wing Commander CIC there is a patch to run DOS Privateer in WIN or get the Deluxe version, it is ported to win.

It is hard to fly with turkeys when you soar with eagles.

Unless you dont care about graphics, go for X-Wing Alliance. Tie Fighter has a better campaign, but the graohics on that and X-wing are rubbish. (i dont know about Xwing vs Tie fighter)
