I liked the X-W:A campaign. Especially the earlier missions. That robot dude (I forget his/its name) cracked me up sometimes.

@outcast,

You can get both X-Wing and TIE with Enhanced Graphics(xvt quality, not that first enhancement they released.) And they both work for Win95. Got mine on Ebay, looks great. X-Wing had 120+ missions. (ah, those were the days. XW=120, FL=13. WOW.)

in this order

StarLancer
Freespace & Silent Threat
Freespace 2 (have good goddam joystick)
X2
X-Wing v Tie Fighter & Balance of Power
Wing Commander
Wing Commander 2 & SO1/SO2
Wing Commander Armada
Privateer
Wing Commander 3
Wing Commander 4
Wing Commander Prophecy & SO
Privateer 2
rest of X series
Elite (superb gameplay but you'll prob hate the graphics)

don't ever play and especially do-not-ever-buy BC3K as you will be giving money to the Beast. by boycotting his godawful game we might actually starve him to death or drive him to crime.

and Tachyon: the fridge should have subtitled "in space no-one can hear you snore"

lol, taw, I get the impression you don't like battlecruiser.

Taw, you got to give Tachyon its due. Bruce Cambell voice over was superb and could leave you laughing for hours.

I agree with Finalday , Taw. Tach was good. Just not very openended, or replayable. Good for a one time experience though. I thought the GalSpan ships looked real clean and the Bora Vessels looked dirty and used. Very good job there. As for playability, I liked the scale of the capships and stations, and fighting got pretty intense.

As Tawalkana mentioned, try ELITE -- the "mother" of all games of this type. You can find several adaptions on line, if you Google for it. (There was one with fairly decent graphics, but one of the game creators made the site take it off line.)

ELITE is about 20 years old now and is best for nostalgia for us older guys. But you might like to try it just to see how much of an influence it has on games even now. e.g. Starting with a basic ship and making money to equip it -- by bounty hunting, mining, trading or pirating; an evil alien enemy; hyperspacing to different systems; salvaging cargo in space; even a few missions to fly. And remember that it was designed to use just 32 kilobyte of memory!

p.s. My nephew has pilfered allmost all of my Privateer and Wing Commander games. The brat took the disks and left me the empty boxes!

P'd me off, since I didn't even realise they were gone! He left the boxes, instructions booklets etc. Just went off with the floppies and CDs. Probably comes from his Scottish blood on his father's side.

in my opinion there are some decent sci-fi games but not as good as FL

again, X2
again, Homeworld 1-2
again, Freespace
Darkspace is pretty good for an MMORPG
uhhhhh......... you could try....hmmm.... making a TC mod (bit beyond me, couldnt even get a damned ship mod using a mpodel already in FL to work)
.........well.....thats about it............ aside from the verry verry old TIE fighter game that was made in i think 95
