Returning... Could be Newbie question

gday folks

i used to play freelancer alot, i posted ect. it was one of the best games ive ever played, and im not a fan of space games. i basically returned to the site to see if there was any news of a FL2, this was probably the biggest issue when i left as the modding community was just coming down from its peak.

Looks like the news is bad. ive read through, and it seems like there isnt going to be one. Some people hint at the fact that FL was not a financial success for microsoft, thus- a good reason for pessimism. Ive read through but nobody has stated CONCLUSIVELY that there isnt going to be a FL2. Forgive me but that and the extremely large FL2 ideas thread still give me confusion. Whats the answer?

i suppose Its been tried, flooding MS with "hope" mail/requests for FL2. But has flooding Digital anvil been done? i mean maybe they could find another producer. And i really find it hard to belive that this game was a "failure" for MS. in one word, Bull****. Fine, MS probably didnt make as much money making FL as it did ripping off small companies and establishing a computer cartel, but surely FL2 isnt that bad a prospect.

Also, if someone tells me that there is no hope, Somthing occured to me. Why are we still here? God damn this is a strong community. I think we should probably just keep on keepin on. im going to Hit the MP community and see if i can contribute to the modding community.

Who knows....... Nobody has considdered the fact that ANOTHER company might decide to take a crack at FL2. And to the companies... Freelancer was one of only a few games which i would legally purchase.

Far as I can tell, MS is in a "will-not-confirm-nor-deny" mode as to the possibility of a sequel. Officially they've said nothing either way... come to think of it, I haven't ever heard MS say anything publically about FL at all in the past year or so.

You hold hopes like everyone here on a sequel to FL. First off, MS own DA. Someone would have to buy them or the FL name to be able to produce a sequel.

Second, there is nothing official as to a sequel. No yes or no coming from the DA or MS camp although we do know that DA still exist.

I personally feel they will make one.

I think its dead in the water. With Chris Roberts gone, I don't think they'll make a sequel. I'm surprised they even finished the first one since he left mid-project. Anywho, it's just another thing like Wing Commander that died leaving a massive following.

Yeah, i havent discovered the modding community yet. i recently got ADSL, which is under cable performance (internet) but far superior to 56.k, so im going to hit MP and download heaps of mods.

also, i was talking to my friend who is also a FL fan. he said that while FL1 may not have been a huge success, making FL2 would be much cheaper. Consider, It woudlnt be very expensive for MS/DA to make a FL2 that was say 90% the same with a few added features? thats quite cheap to do, not only that its (unfortunately) a COMMON PRACTICE in the Gaming world! Companies produce cheap sequels that are much the same as the original, My point is not i WANT this to happen, but FL2 is not such a bad financial option from a MS/DA viewpoint.
Alas, if im right, the next question is do we WANT FL2 if it will be like that.
If you dont get me just say so and ill try and explain

Also, in response to the first person who responded ( i think) if microsoft have taken a dont say yes dont say no perspective, no offence, i get what you mean but could you evaluate a little further?

My intentions are not to flame, i just dont get wether you mean. For example, you could meen..

1: MS have considered it, and havent said yes or no
2: The thaught hasnt even crossed their minds and therefore, (obviously) they havent said anything about it.

The reason for an FL 2 is story line. The mods are great, but it would be nice to have some more story to deal with ...

It is in fact possible to add new story to FL, but it's immensely time consuming.

Post Tue Oct 19, 2004 10:32 am

Exactly. And there aren't many people willing to spend the time and put in the effort scripting a new storyline and then give it away to the ungrateful masses (not the we could be grateful even if we wanted to...but I digress). Modding is time-consuming enough as it is. Ergo, if we want story we need a sequel.

Although i wasn't the first person to respond to this. What it means, is MS have not said "yeah we are going to make a sequel" or "Nah, its not gonna happen". FL2 is in limbo so to speak. No one knows. I still think its too early perhaps for them to release any info at this stage being its just over a year since it was released and still going for £30 in the UK. And i understand what you mean by using the same graphics engine, R* are using the same one for SA as they did for GTA3...

Its not just how much it will take to make, its the man power involved. Not to go into another "what would you like to see in FL2" discussion, a lot of people want newer and bigger systems with more ships and weapons. I believe i read somewhere that MS offices across the globe were involved in making this game and i have no doubt that MS would do the same again. Thats alot of offices to put into the production of a video game when you consider the size of MS.

As for the rights to the game, i tried to convince my "contact" at Vivendi Universal to buy it. Don't think its going to happen somehow. One thing i did find out, that was confirmed by Bargib when he recieved the concept artwork from DA, is that they are still around. If MS were finished with them, they wouldn't be sat at their desks playing with their pens, MS don't waste money so they must have them working on something...

@bret, it's only $9.99 in EB here.

Anyway, I'd be happy if they just released an expansion pack. A friend at MS was gonna slip me an alpha awhile back, but it looks like the idea got shelved. So there was one at one time.

Post Tue Oct 19, 2004 10:57 pm

the whole using the same engine wouldn't be bad, maybe a few differences in the character models but apart from that, just some more story orientated missions and so forth would just about make it as if not more profitable

I wholeheartedly agree

IT doesnt HAVE to be a FL2. Id be perfectly happy with the expansion pack. i belive that they got most things right with FL. maybe an extention, chuck in some more features ( i wont get into FL2 ideas thats already got a thread) but you get my point. The point is of course, it wouldnt be expensive

I think just some extra story mission, maybe some new factions, and more ships and weapons would do the trick. Just like the expansion to Privateer, which did a good job.
