My waste of missiles

I was fighting Stilettos in a Dromedary. I started the fight with 50 Catapult and 50 Moonstalker missiles.

When I ran out of missiles, I had only killed two or three Stilettos.

What am I doing wrong? How can I make my missiles count?

Wait until you get the fighters right in your sights, and are assured a hit. Make sure you've got plenty of lasers also, remember, missiles are not as expendable as energy. Use them wisely, and not all in one go. Primary weapons are always your guns. (In most cases). Good Luck!

Of all the systems, in all the galaxy, you had to fly into mine.

Check the range of the weps and make sure you stay within that range of the ship you are fireing at. Also do not forget, he may be using counter measures too.

Standard Charlie Whiskey Missile Drill:

You have to take out their shields first then ram the missile down their throats. Use a shield zapping beam to take out the shield first, then let your victim make a head on gun pass at you - wait until he gets within 500m or so, launch and break. If you do it properly, you will be rewarded with a clear and crisp explosion without the silly "I don't want to diiiiiie!" death scream. Rinse and repeat.

Like Stunpulse, TDC etc.

By the way, it seems like the missiles in the game are still using the Jurassic "Pursuit Guidance" technique from the 1950's. Modern missiles most likely use a variant of "Proportional Navigation Guidance" that actually flies a trajectory with a lead on the target.

I've been heavily involved in the actual mathematics lately, and I'm sure the game's programmers have been scratching their heads over it. It is just an interesting observation.

Only fire missiles when the enemy is flying straight toward you.

As soon as they turn around and charge at you, fire a couple missiles (like one that wipes out shields immediately followed by one with very high damage points) ... just send them off and use your normal weapons as well. The enemy should die before he/she/it can pass by you.

If you try to use missiles at any other time, they'll probably miss their targets.

And since you'll have to fight them at times without quickly getting into that head-on pass situation, I don't recommend normal weapons that focus primarily on shields. I have a Microsoft trackball mouse, so I use the extra mouse buttons to the left and right for the 2 missile types.

I only use misiles on the Kusari naval forces re-balance mods. They are so fast and erratic you can't get enough hits to kill with most weapons. But, they do love to fly right at you, and a cannonball or catipult once the shield is down does the trick nearly every time. Quite a satisfying boom I might add.

1.Always shoot as much shield out as possible before launching any missiles. Preferable to shoot the WHOLE shield out first. Missiles do twice the damage to hull as to shield, and actually do even MORE damage depending upon the ship. This is the best advice going - a cannoball can kill all but a titan with one hit when a shield is down. With sheild up you will need about 4 hits to take the shield down, followed by another to kill him.

2. Always be patient, they turn round and come at you again - you'll see once you fight em enough - when they do - get ready.

3. Use thruster - it adds an extra 120 to missile speed, so it flies faster. Also - whilst going faster, the missiles SEEM to track MUCH better too - so they are more likely to hit.

4. Once launched - STRAFE sideways - this prevents the NPC or yourself from shooting the missile, and theirfore destroying it.

5. Never launch a missile when they are within 200 m or so - its too close - let them pass

6. Don't lauch if they are flying away from you - unless you have a feel for NPC behaviour (and kinda know what they are going to do next) you will just waste ammo.

I aint no superstar with missiles, but my loadout has included them for about the past 8 months - so i think i can say i know how to use em effectively. IF you get rid of their shields and time the lauch right, they will die in one hit (dependant on missile type of course). Once you get used to it, you can firelink the missiles and be shooting them down in a few seconds - works great for PvP as well...

Oh man, I just love the missles. They can really help to quickly reduce the numbers of hostiles. A couple ways in which I use them are:

1. I charge the pack n pick a target, usually a hostile on the edge of the pack. You should almost always use staifing thrusters at the same time. Engine-kill and spin. You don't have to spin 180, only about 90 to 120 then kick on the thrusters and sweep in behind your target. His shields should have been reduced in the initial flyby. Then send a catapult right up his tail pipe. If you fire from a fair distance you'll probably not miss. Don't fire unless you've got his shields down. It's a waste to do otherwise. Sometimes the enemy is in the process of turning around to come after me. In that case I don't even wait to get lined up. I release the missle soon as I see him on my screen. The enemy target can almost never get away from these unless he cut's in very sharply. Missles that can go right up the butt of a fighter seem to do more damage.

2. The strait shot. If the hostiles shields have been reduced, get a little distance with engine kill so when you come back at them your both coming at each other in a strait line. Laser off any remaining shields at full thrust and straif and release your missle. You won't be disappointed.

No they are not a waste of money if you use them right. Matter of fact they can make the difference for some of the higher level missions. Also they are very useful for assassination missions. You can kill the target very fast once his shields are down. Two, three, four missles, target down and it's time to go home and pick up a paycheck.

Ever thought of the fact that Catapults suck? What class are they anyway?

You were gone?

Hehehe get a firestalker missiles. This is the only missile that does not miss-by-mile!

The only one that I have found useful. If they don't take care of the job, my sunslayer torp usually do them in .
