How extreme are shield type differences?

@Doom

if you are using class10 ship (Eagle/Titan/Sabre) use the class10 positron shield.

if you are using class9 ship (HammerHead/Cernturian) use class8 graviation shield.

I think you've hit the nail right on the head here chum! Although the Level 8 graviton shield has slightly fewer hit points than the class 9 molecular or positron, the fact that it protects against a better range of weapon types gives it the edge (Pulse especially).

Also, If you're using a lower level ship, you've gotta stick with a graviton.

Don't think shield type maters with the coded/Nomad weapons.

Its just all weaps v sheild types, when you are properly set up, you can have a set of lvl 10 or 9 sheilds, one for each house.

Optimised for the factions that operate there and the weaps they use, visit the mercenary navy online for more info about weaps v sheilds and for a complete weapons database!

Weapons that hurt that type of shield the most do 20% MORE damage, and weapons that hurt that type of shield the least do 20% LESS

So the level 8 Adv. Protector shield (5890 HP, strong against laser/photon pulse) can be better than the level 10 Adv. Brigadine shield (8280 HP, weak against laser/photon/pulse).

If someone shot you with 7000 laser damage, the Protector would take 5600 damage and have 290 HP left.

But the Brigadine would take 8400 damage and would fail.

Also, since I think shield batteries restore a constant number of HP, your shield batteries will last longer if you're using a shield that's strong against your enemies.

So, it seems that if you're always fighting enemies who use laser/photon/pulse weapons (if you take the highest paying missions, you'd probably be fighting powerful Bounty Hunters VHFs, and they use those weapons), the level 8 Adv. Protector shield would be better.

Except that the C10 shield has a higher recharge rate then the C8 graviton shield. Assuming you can dodge fairly well the weakness of your shield type vs hunter weapons won't matter as your shield will rechrage before ever going down.

The Adv. Brigadine H. F. Shield has 8280 capacity and 184 regeneration. 184/8280 = 2.22%

The Adv. Protector H. F. Shield has 5890 capacity and 130 regeneration. 130/5890 = 2.22%

Both of them have the same percent regeneration rate, so in the scenario I laid out above, the C10's higher recharge rate won't make it any better. Shield type advantages benefit the regeneration rate to the same proportion as they benefit the capacity.

If your making cash the easy way and mining NPC's theres an easy test in one single system. In Hudson in a Drom kill the Xenos in a Graviton shield and see how long you survive and do the same with the Molecular. Or switch bases and use the Rougues to test with.

Wont tell you which is better but if you are NPC killing having the right shield does give an advantage especially when trying to tractor in the better loot they drop when you have a swarm around you.

But for pvp in VHF's not really an issue unless you know what the other player has installed then its a case of luck if they have wyrms or krackens and you have a lvl 8 graviton or lvl 10 positron, then just stick to lvl 10 positron. If HF's then its either a molecular or graviton.

Howabout in PVP? Players nearly ALL use nomads/codenames. What difference does it make now? Seems to me that those weapons ignore shield bonuses.

If your enemy is using Nomads/codenames, then the best shield would be the one that has the most energy, regardless of type, so it would be the class 10 Adv. Brigadine H. F. shield.
