Favorite Maneuvers

What's your favorite way to surprise that special someone following you around?
How do you kill Cap Ships the easiest?
Are mines more useful than they appear?
All that and more (hopefully) in THIS thread!

Personally I love to accelerate straight at the sucker, uh, target and, when close and fast enough, release a mine while simultaneously pulling up hard. It usually works (ESPECIALLY on Cap Ships) and can sometimes be really funny if it hits at the right moment.

Oooo, pretty....what do we blow up first?

one of my favourite manouvers is heading straight for them then as they pass do an engine kill then launch missiles & torp at enemy
works every time

Chris Roberts's Wing Commander booklet had some good basic dog fighting tactics.. even against cap ships

Cap ships have a nice little blind spot right on their underbelly (well, maybe not the Dreadnought, but the others do.). Right there their hull gets in the way of their turrets and you can just unload the guns on 'em. Careful with torps, mines and missiles, 'cause they do splash damage.

I never took a liking to mines, but when they hit, they do significant damage. A Ripper can take out a good portion of a ship's hull, which could be the difference between a win and a lose.

As for fighters, I prefer to maneuver onto their six (which is why I hate engine kill) and unleash the fury. Under prolonged battles, TDCs could significantly drain an opponent's powerplant.

I like to go right up to an opponents base and sit right in front of their doors and kill anything that moves. It's a blind spot for the stations turrents (get really close to the doors). Note, this should only be done with a ship with really heavy guns. And don't go into the landing bay if you're not docking. --- VH16

Ever try that cool trick where you hold a piece of paper up to your face and you can see the effects of your blindspot in your eye?

Don't start of about ships here Doom.

Best fighting technique for me is always a headfirst run with myt guns blazing a firing a few missiles and dropping a few mines. Then when they are scattered, I can take them down independently, without to much trouble.
It's the initial run wich is the most dangerous. They are all lined up and able to hit you, when they are scattered they can't.

And ofcourse an agile fighter helps.

Using engine kill for the whole flight, and moving around on thruster only. A little tricky to get the hang of, but it's fun as all hell and it makes you harder to hit.

Also, dropping mines on tradelanes as I go through them to make sure no one can follow me. You get away, and the other guy has to make a 10k cruise run to the next ring.

If you're in a sluggish Titan or Sabre, and you're against a more maneuverable Eagle, try Reverse Thrust and try to keep your opponent in front of you. It gives you more time to shoot your opponent, and if they fire back, they're likely to lose in a shooting match.

its about manuvers, not ships.

this reverse thrust what I use agains AI but against players I think I will be easy target, specialy if its team duel so the slower fighter eventualy will attrack all the mines.

many times I fighter Eagle and can not get him a head of me so I can shoot him when I reverse thrust in this 1 sec he would be able to crush my shields..

(most duels does not alow nanos/bats and that specialy for titan is disadvantege)

Always a good tactic, break their formation and attack them one by one. Destroy easy ships first to get less guns firing at you. And NEVER stop moving, especially if you're the slower ship. --- VH16

Of coarse all this is void in an VHF with level 10 sheilds. At that point, victory is more or less just a matter of time (unless you're a reaalllllllly sucky pilot)

A good tactic is (in Single player only, most humans wouldn't be dumb enough as opponents to do this) this. AI ships tend to circle out far and then charge straight at you. If you can fire a few shots to get their sheilds down, fire a torpedo at them. Since the game doesn't treat the torp as a missile, the AI fighters will usually not evade them and acutally blunder straight into it. Depending on who you're fighting this will destroy an enemy in one or two hits, especially useful in a situation where you are hopelessly outgunned and need to even the odds quickly.

I found shieldkillers in combo with missiles very usefull. Mount a few extra normal guns and you got a killer loadout.

I always unselect the shieldkiller from the list of weapons, so I don't fire it when I press the firebutton. it saves energy. it needs some extra buttonpushing and a bit of planning, but it kinda works for me. Against NPC's that is. I never tried that on players.
