why doesn't some poor sod who is well known on TLR, like Nickless, Sir Spectre, Gromit, etc. set up a new server, advertise it profusely here, and then say when it'll be online. Making sure people are interested in the damn thing, then launching it!...

*looking at myself in the mirror and saying "Huh?"*
Cardamine, that is basically what I am doing with MY server. I emulate Elite in many ways and it was a VERY popular server. I am the only other server that is still around that is TLR affiliated (TLR affiliation requires no mods needed to play by the player and no PK in Liberty)! I have spent hundreds of dollars on upgrades and weeks worth of time on, for, about the server. Have you seen how many servers come and go? As for servers going away, I see players going away at a far faster rate. Player to server ratios use to be 4 or 3 to 1. Lately they have been 2 or 1 to 1. Check it out here.

The problem is some players want to play FL their way, not anyone elses way. Then that is when they start their own server and I see you wish to do that. (I started it to start a community) That is fine but if you can't make it happen for yourself, then you should adapt to some current server or work within the server to change it. Since I am not the tyrant type I have my own forum (at my own expense mind you) and ask for ideas. In fact right now I have a poll to decide on mild RPG. I tried once before months ago but no one was interested so I didn't do it. Now? Players are for it.

Maybe we can just pick an excisting server with few players, but a good ping and claim it to be our own. On the other hand, we want to have our say about the server we play on. Wich mods and stuff like that.

If you get involved in a server environment it's amazing how much pull you'll have and how much people will listen to you. Nickless, you have that pull here but have you tried on the server of your choice?

Doesn't people remember the ex-Browclopsian migration to Alpha Server 24/7? There were serious problems with the ex-Browclops players going over there and later getting the experience ruined by the cheaters. The sysadmin was AWOL or set himself behind bulletproof glass because the sysadmin did nothing and no one could contact him (FYI, my email address still works). Everyone thought Alpha was good and lots of players played there putting in lots of time until they found out it was all basically a waste of time. Why didn't they find out what the place was like before they played there? Is ping the only reason for choosing a server? HA! Live and learn I guess. There is a saying I remember that applies: Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Sorry about the double post. RIght after I had posted this first thread, I decided that it would be better placed in the MP forum, so I set up a thread there (couldn't figure out how to move it) and came back to delete this thread, but it already had responses, so I didn't want to be disrespectful of the responders. I am sorry if this caused "confusion and delay" (Arrrgggh! my kid watches way too much Thomas the Tank Engine!).

I must say that I am very appreciative of all the feedback. You folks are really making me feel like MP is a worthwhile venture. If half the folks playing are as friendly and helpful as you folks, it should be a great thing! I must admit to being initially intimidated at the concept of interacting with some real FL masters, but it sounds like I can put enough time towards it to be rewarding.

Thanks again, and I apologize for the double posting thing.

Tom.

Thought I'd put my two cents in. It's fun after flying arround in a VHF for ages to start over on servers in a dinky starflier. Sometimes I play MP just to the point where I go to Rheinland and buy a falcon, or possibly go up to Kusari and buy a dragon, or (for some odd reason, such as going blind) I buy a Bretonian ship. All three opportunites haver their adventures, and MP allows you to go and become several factions without clogging your PC up with saved games. Oh, y Gromit. @Earendil, your server and ideas seem to be great, too bad I am more close to europeian servers (Israel) so my primary server must be europeian (mostly UK or any english speakers), but I will be glad to give your server a chance, you seem serious and hard working to be Irc.Dal.Net admin

I am new in MP, and I am testing trying servers ( already got 4 VHFs in 2 servers), but I have hard times getting lagged in PvP specialy in the amiracan server.

I would love to be in European TLR-dedicated server, or if any of you guys make a europeian server I would glad to join.

Does what nation you're in affect what servers you can access? Being an American shouldn't restrict some one from accessing a server, and it wouldn't change the game (except the language that the chat is in). --- VH16

its ping/lag problem if you are 2 far you can not play well and actualy hurt others cuase u might make large load to the server getting others to lag also.

so I check the server when its full if its get most the time over 400 ping I wont join but as long its around 200-300 I might try it and see if I get lag in large battles or not, but mostly the ping time should be like this

my country server (israel): 15-30
good europeian servers: 80-150
good us servers: 150-300

you see there is 100 ping difference betwen us and eu servers thats why my ideal server must be europeian, of course there is much important things from pint and lag, like Admin personality server guid lines, friends in the server, and what clan I want to be in.

so to solve this I eventualy will chose 2 main servers for me one eu and the other us, since the local server got no players in.

A low ping doesn't guarantee a good connection. The lag is caused mostly by cheaters, especially the red lad. Usually someone enteres the server with a mod running or the wrong mod, or no mod at all when one is required, depending on the server stats.

Hackers also cause trouble.

It's also wise to close all programs wich use bandwith like Kazaa, updateprograms, MSN/ICQ and stuff like that. Especially when you already got a low speed connection. When you have a #Mbit connetction you wont be realy bothered by all those programs.

Also, see to it you don't have to much programs running wich eat up your mem. You can have a Gbit connection but when you're low on mem you still have probs playing the game.

Yes, you guys are all mostly right, As for Nickless, I do have a lag problem but since the server load is so low (under 30 msec, green bar, at 20 players) then I know it can only be ADSL uplink. I should have 128k but it seems to be closer to 384k since I am only a mile from my CO. Yet even the 384k doesn't help when a lot of players start doing missions and things that double or triple individual player traffic. I still have the occassional modder but nothing like it used to be which when nearly always at least one person was modding.

I have a gig of fast memory and I reset flserver every 2 days since flserver STILL has a little memory leak. Yet even then I am not paging to the HDD because the gig is more than enough. Since mine server is a dedicated 'puter it only runs monitoring software for the server and the hardware (besides flserver of course). Plus it's o/c'd with a big, honking, copper heatsink! (average temp is 33C!!)

I have found that the yellow lag pops up around 200 to 300 msec total and red lag at 400 to 500 msec total. This total includes the server load AND the ping time. So if you have a ping of 300 msec and the server you are playing on is running hard at 100 msec, you get red lag. Sounds like not so good pings from where you are DOOM but understandable. Yet a player on my server is from New Zealand and he can play with only a little stuttering lag you can see when you duel him.

Hehe! I have seen you DOOM on the server. Have you had many lagging issues and how bad were they? I am looking into some options but they are in the mucho dollar range per month so I have to tread softly with the checkbook.

@Earendil: the server seems fine, but still since I am GMT+2 time I have not encountered large number of players (at max we where 11) so i am looking to test it more ( I was kind of confused until I noticed that the AI can refresh shields ) I did 2 missions with another person the server did not lag at all.

could you tell me what time most players come I wana set the clock to wake up and test, give me the time by "GMT+X".

anyway your server seems one of the best us servers.
I will post later and say what I think in the server fourms, I got few questions but not now.

I really recomend this server for North Amiricans specialy for Newbies its very friendly enviroment to start in.

about that you are going to invest more $ in the server, if that was my money I would wait a little bit and see how things turn up ( unless big clan/s want to join) from my little experiance with Irc servers the most important thing is to be
pacetiant and keep the hard work and stick with your goal and never quit ( ah its life facts lol), its actualy bad strategic to get the best expencive server and then ppl starts to join as this comfortable server its normal status for them, when things starts to be bad (lag) they wont apreciate anything, since they are used to the best hardware + net speed, so in order to have a good comunity all the users must be part of the build up or at least the experiancing the server's/admins other palyers changes, so when you make improvements they will be thankful and realy apreciate it, in order to build a good comunity the comunity wont be one until they all face hard times and good times togather and if you prevent your comunity from having that by protecting it, you wont have a solid comunity
that would back you up and return even if the worse happenes (the server down for a week due to hardware problems, you wont belive it, it happened to my 2 other servers this week, and I want to see what will happen to there users)

its all depends you want quaility users or many users.
I am sure you know what you are doing and what you want.
if the addon to your servers you feel its very important in the servers teenage life then you should do it.
the server spirtual existince is build betwen interactions betwen the players (Admins server staff and users)

for example: do you alow your server police I think they are called {AR} (never saw anyone of them online) to play as pirates in another characters?

*if I make a server, I want my comunity to stay with me and vote togather to move to another game when the day will come.
