Infrequent Multi-Player

I am very interested in the multi-player aspects of Freelancer, but I am somewhat concerned about not being able to get online to contribute very often or for very long. Is it feasible (and enjoyable) to be an occassional on-line player? If so, do you folks have any recommendations as to how to go about introducing myself to the on-line multiplayer world? Or should I just content myself to play through the SP mods?

Thanks, Tom.

Problem is, there are not many good servers very busy anymore. Jolt and UK server probably being one of the last of them, around UK that is. And both of them are usually stuffed. You'll be a lucky man to get on there.

I used to play on Frost-Works level 2 Server, but thta's kinda deserted too nowadays.

@tom I too am an infrequent MP player...and I can understand your conerns. But you can still get a lot out of MP if you do it right. firstly you need to choose yourself a good server....the only way to do this is to take recommendations, check out a few and chat to the people online. I can recommend Alpha Centauri 2, they seem to be a decent bunch on there, but I'm sure other people can recommend good ones too (try the MP forum). Next, when you've found a server that interests you...put aside 2 or 3 hours when you get the chance and play on that server until you've got a decent ship/payload. After this you can log on any time that you want to whether it be for 20 minutes every month or whatever. If you've got yourself a ship that you enjoy flying then you'll find it much easier to jump into pvp battles. Its definitely worth that first couple of hours though. Also, if you're on there and see that members of a clan are on there (usually have strange letters before their name), talk to them and ask them to help you out. Usually clan members are obliged to help out server newbies...so they may be able to help you build up your ship a bit quicker by sharing mission cash etc.

I've got a half decent character on AC2 (flying a hammerhead at the moment), that only took me about 3/4 an hour to build up....plan your money-building strategy in SP before going onto the server, it will help you in the long run. I only log on about an hour or two a month, and I still get loads of fun out of it.

Hope that helps!

Tom, in their many different ways they are saying you get what you put into it. As for the rest of the FL MP world do they care? In various but slight ways. Servers like the orginal Elite never cleaned house so they had nearly 7000 player directories but my server does a delete if you don't log into a character in the last 90 days or who's total flying time is less than a minute. This can be considered a "slam" against those who infrequently play FL MP but it isn't really. Just a way to make things easier for the flserver admin tools. Also if you make promises you can't keep in game some players will be understandably ticked off but if you're up front about it, like you are now, no one has any problem except those that have problems of their own. Trust me I've tried to be friendly with everyone but it is impossible! So basically should you be concerned? No.

You could get more involved with the forum aspect versus the gaming aspect of FL. I know several oldtimers on TLR admit they hardly play FL but still post profusely. To each his own.

HEHE! Yes Commodore Gromit!

Hey Tom, double posting isn't cool. You had me going because I can access your post through the Multiplayer forum when I am in Netscape but have to go to IE (yeck, spitum!) to be able to view your post in the Discussion forum sometimes.

EDIT: I post too much BBcode on other boards!

Grom: 28 wasn't it? Tomorrow if I remember correctly. Congrats in advance

Anyway, I played FL MP last night, was fun. Not extremely fun because I flew alone. Flying a few missions with some of you guys would be nice tho.

why doesn't some poor sod who is well known on TLR, like Nickless, Sir Spectre, Gromit, etc. set up a new server, advertise it profusely here, and then say when it'll be online. Making sure people are interested in the damn thing, then launching it! If and when I can twist my dads arm to let me have the net in my room, I'd be more than happy to launch my server, with incentives for people to join, like "start with the Outcasts on Cali", "start with a Stilleto on Volgtland in Dresden", etc. You get the picture !

Poor sod? I must object

Anyway, I'd love to host a server. All I need is a server and an excelent connection. Too bad I lack both
But, yeah, if someone could manage to set up a European, TLR-dedicated server, I'll be on it.

Same here, its just that too many servers have been set-up, with too few people playing them, so in the end its gonna be like the universe, as it expands, the forces to contract are immense, so eventually it will crunch! People will give up with their servers, and then there'll be a lack of them! oh well . . .

Maybe we can just pick an excisting server with few players, but a good ping and claim it to be our own.
On the other hand, we want to have our say about the server we play on. Wich mods and stuff like that.

hee hee lol. i mean someone who has the ability to rouse interest in what should be a great server, especially if we all know each other! It'd be like a massive LAN sever, but just for TLR peeps! I'll have a look into it later!
