Light fighters.

After reading some guides and such, most seem to have a similar theme - buy a very heavy fighter. Why is this?

Granted light fighters can't mount the really big guns, but those few times I've tried a heavy fighter, I just seemed to be a big easy target.

I like the Drake light fighter very much. It can mount decent guns and dodge a lot of fire. But if you want the most powerful guns, a light fighter probably won't handle them. And if you want to do something like fly into the Outcasts' system when they are hostile -- which is almost always -- you'd better have the top guns to knock out the baddies who swarm all over you.

In the SP game, I stayed with my Drake long after I could have bought a heavy fighter. But eventually I switched over for the fire power. I could defeat almost anything in the Drake, but I got tired of taking so long to do so. Also, I got tired of having my shields knocked down by only one or two hits and having to duck and dodge until they came back.

Heavy fighter or light fighter ... depends a lot on your style of combat. Bob and weaver or go in swinging? Up to you.

In the FL2 mod that I play most often we have the raptor. But for a non moded ship it would be the hawk.

It's why I like the Eagle. It has the spirit of a light fighter in the body of a very heavy fighter that can mount some truly awesome weapons (Firekiss mk II's rule!) Level 9 and 10 weapons are crucial to those sick few out there (like me) who enjoy taking the turrents off a battleship and then buturing the navy and police as they come. The eagle is a compromise of maneuverability for firepower, but clever use of thrusters can even out the playing field. --- RR16

Ok, I've just reached the Kusari systems and sold my Cavalier and bought a Drake.

OMG, It's so tiny.

You want to see tiny??

Get someone you know and trust to shoot the wings off it and dont ever repair then (untick them in the repair screen)
Or in single play, take plenty of nanobots into a rad field and melt them off.

Sure you have a few ugly wires hanging down, but its just cosmetic, and you have halved your profile again.....

Well, I finished all the story missions and was rank 24 at the end.

The Drake is such a fun little fighter to fly and most importantly, it actually looks good too. Just like a cicada.

I love light fighters. Navy heavy things don't provide much of a challenge to shoot down. It'll take me a good 10 or even 15 seconds to get those pesky things in my crosshairs long enough to kill them. Besides, I always though the dagger was the smallest (it's the sleekest anyway, impossible to hit). --- RR16

the drake is harder to hit then the dagger... (just shoot missile at him )

Well yea heavy fighters not necessary in SP. I used the Drommedary freighter till lev 16, even for required missions. Then I bought the Anubis. However I had to use the Order shields it came with which was not as good as my adv lev 6 freighter shields. The Drommedary is a freighter that turns as good as most heavy fighters. It holds 3 guns and 5 turrets level 6. I equip it with sweeper missles, catapault missles and 1 other set of missles that strt with an S (not stalkers but something else) This ship can fight with the missles and since it has a 275 cargo hold you can get rich quick and thus afford missles no problem.

The very heavy fighters like Titan and Sabre make the game not worth playing in SP, as you have zero chance of dying. Gotta have some sense of danger to make it interesting.

I'm partial to BW fighters. If you're goin' light, go dagger. It's got four gun/missle slots as well as a turret. But if you're goin' into any thing ruffer than the IW's, you need at least a heavy fighter

Then again I had a dagger when I got to Omicron Alpha (although I wish I had a Valkrie). You can suvive with light fighters. It's just alot tougher.
