Geforce FX

Hi I am pretty new to the forum. But I am wondering if anyone has a geforce FX card, and if so, if they can give me some information on how well FreeLancer looks using this card versus a regular geforce TI series or a radeon series videocard. I would appreciate the information. Thanks ....

Don't get a 5200. That's a POS card. unfortunately I bought it thinking it was better than my ATI 8500. Now I can't run any of my games any higher than 1280 X 1024 res. Which really sucks 'cause freelancer looked awesome at 1600 X 1200.

Well, I have the next best one, and Freelancer looks AWESOME! So if you want the Geforce FX, go right ahead. You won't regret it.

yeah the cards aint that bad. Traded in my TI4200 for a GFX5600 256 and have not looked back. Now able to ramp up the res and make space look more lovely than it did before and all my other games look prefect now i have it. Had a problem with Vice City looking a bit shabby but all cleaned up now i got the card.

I can't afford a new geForce cos the money I was saving up for one I'm having to spend on repairing my car after someone vandalised it the other night. I'll vandalise them if I ever catch them. Shame cos my MX440 is chogging my system these days and otherwise the PC is pretty good. Still I could always raid the holiday money, kids savings, wife's pin money. Wife wants a CCTV camera putting up on the corner of the house, f*** knows where the £500 is coming for that, I'll have to sell my a*** on streetcorners again!

so much easier in FL isn't it? go to job board, pick a job, go kill something, get money, buy what you want.

Edit: Sorry, Free LANCER... god I wish I could type...

Thanks for the reply guys. Now I only have one other question. Does FreeLancer actually use the GeForce FX CineFX Engine??? The reason I am asking is because I am really into gaming and I think that the Geforce FX technology is awsome, but the question is, are there enough games out there that actually support that specific engine? I am hoping Freelancer is one of them. Ive waited for a long time for this game to come out and when I play it, I want to see some major special effects goodies. Dont get me wrong the game itself is just beautiful, I just want to spkie it up a bit. Again thanks for the info.

I'm packing a 1.7Ghz on 512 MB DDR Ram, mixed up with a GeForce 4 Go on my laptop, and I gotta tell you, the first time I played Freelancer I almost had a heart attack. It's beautiful stuff, so go with a GeForce 4.

My system is coming with a Geforce4 ti4200. I am sure it will play nice and smooth, but man I have to tell you, when I looked at the specks on the Geforce FX card 5600 and the 5900 and saw that they can almost duplicate real skin on cimantic characters I was very impressed. Thanks for your input Pinkie..

A lot sites with benchmarks have shown that the Geforce FX 5600 performs roughly the same (or slightly better) than a Geforce 4200. The advantages to the 5600 start coming in when you need Direct X 9 support (which no games currently do that I know of... maybe Eve Online or Unreal 2) or when you start using anti-aliasing and aniostropic filter. You start turning these on with a 4200 and your frame rates will plummet, not so with the 5600. The 256 MB of ram will also help with higher res textures in future games (I think Unreal 2 and Asheron's Call can utilize the highest level of textures).

I would get the 5600 if you're on a budget regardless of your needs (if the choice was a 4200 or a 5600) because the price difference is minimal and why not get full DX9 support? Aniostropic filtering can also improve the visuals pretty significantly, so it's nice not to have to worry about a performance hit. Now who's to say how this will work with Half Life 2 or Doom 3, so if you can't wait and have money to burn, go nuts with the 5900 or 5900 Ultras.

I currently own a Radeon 9500 Pro and it handles Freelancer pretty well but I have some annoyances with other games because (cue broken record) ATI still has some driver issues to work out. Honestly, I'm not blown away by my 9500 Pro's performance with Freelancer, but it looks good, plays smooth, and has slightly better image quality than my old Geforce 4 4200.

awdougherty,

That pretty much answers my question. Even though my system is coming with a Geforce4 ti4200, I am going to get a Geforce FX card and sell the Ti4200. Anyways, thank you all for the information.

Freelancer won't look that much better on a geforce fx than a geforce ti 4200, This is because a game has to be coded to use what the geforce fx offers, I.e the Cinefx cinematic effects.
It may run at a higher res with 16x FSAA and 8x anisotropic filtering with a higher frame rate, But it won't add extra effects to a game that does'nt have those extra effects pre-coded.
Personally my machine runs freelancer at a reasonable framerate, 60+ fps,
And thats using quincux FSAA and 8x anisotropic filtering at 1024*768/32 bit.
My eyes hurt like hell trying to squint at text anything above this, And my old 19" monitor probably is'nt upto the job anyway.

Oni_666 speaks words of wisdom. Getting a FX card is mainly an investment thing as everybody has generally said in this post that most games at the moment dont support the extra goddies that you get with the card.

One thing i will say is that put my new GFX5600 256mb card in the other day, started up Freelancer and a window came up saying that Freelancer did not recognise my card. Continued anyway and everything seemed to be ok. Not sure if anybody can help me out on this or come across this kind of problem?
