It must be nice cruising in the stratosphere with gear like that, however, closer to earth.....
I get a seamless delivery just using a Geforce 4 MX440. Maybe the framerate isnt up there with you guys, but I am getting a visibly good result at 1024x780x32 at 85 mhz. (No eyestrain but being old & half-blind probably helps.)
There may be some need for persuasion that the extra hundreds of dollars actually make a big difference.

dont worry, be happy

I've got a Ti4200 card (asus) and I also get that message (a window came up saying that Freelancer did not recognise my card). Never had any problems tough.

Somebody mentioned that the FX series will only give you a boost if you are using DX9. Well you are if you are playing Freelancer.
But in this case you will not see any improvement in an FX series card over a GF4. I have seen the game on an FX 5900. It looks and acts no different than a TI 4200 which I run with.

Freelancer doesn't require Direct X 9, I was able to play it with Direct X 8.1. In fact, the graphics driving it are direct x 7.

But as it has been said many times, you will get no benefits from the direct x 9 capabilities of the 5600 in freelancer. I can't think of any games that will give you any benefits at the moment. The real reason now is the relatively minor hit in AA and AF performance, when compared to the 4200 series.

Radeon 9500 pro here,My usual settings are 4x anti-aliasing @ 1600 x 1200.No geforce FX can do 16x aa only up to 8xs aa the only other benefit that you'd probably get is more accurate color not due to the floating point color but due to the fact that all Directx 9 cards support the new 10 bit RGB + 2 bit alpha.Other than that I see no other benefit since most cards can run the game at ok frame rates.

I have just installed a new geforce fx 5200 after cooking my nvidea mx440 the difference is awesome. Everything is brighter, clearer and sharper. Its like having a new pc.
I had the box saying card not recognised and likewise told game to load anyway and I have had no problem running freelancer., It's just a mad guess but the message possibly appears because it is expecting a different graphics card. Your system config is probably stored somewhere and it sees the change after game has been saved no more message..
Of course this is a wild guess and could be total gibberish ...

I read in another post that a lot of special effects are disabled in one if the .ini's. I've been trying to get more info enable them but I haven't had any luck.
Anyone heard anything similar?

By the way I have a 9500 pro. It beat the fx 5600 in all but one of the benchmarks and ATI's picture quality is better..funny I used to be an NVIDIA man......

@logic: If I were you I'd stay with the GF4Ti for the time being...
@PantherRAS: The effect you'rwe talking about aren't the special effects/details, they are game fx for the engines, weaps, and other stuff. The level of detail is handled in the PerfOptions.ini file, located in ...\My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\. look for these entries:

level_of_detail = 1.00
DitherControl = 1.00
use_environment_maps = 1.00
high_detail_textures = 1.00
Nebula = 1.00
SunEffect = 1.00
Asteroids = 1.00
space_dust_detail = 1.00
star_sphere = 1.00
AtmosphereMaterialConfig = 1.00
rtc_performance = 1.00
general_graphics = 1.00
advanced_graphics = 0.00
default_graphics = 1.00

NOTE: These options are also changeable in-game. The values are 0.00(lowest quality) to 1.00(highest quality). As you can see, I'm keeping them at high quality, and everything works perfect under 1024x786x32x24(texture z depth) on a GF4 Ti4200.

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

Judging from what I see in the forums, I changed my mind. I am going to keep my GeForce TI4200 instead for the time being. Until the engine is utilized in more games, I will stick with what works. Thanks for your input guys.

not a bad call... with the 5600 you were futureproofing your card but getting roughly the same performance. makes sense to not spend any money and get the same performance. Who knows what that 150$ will buy when you really need/want to upgrade?

Post Tue Jun 24, 2003 8:39 am

Ok the main reason that i went with the card is that i work in a computer distrubuter and my wife works in the returns department so i just traded in the card and she worked it so i got the new card so no money spent really. So wife's do have their usesB-)

Lol, I am running the game on a Geforce 2 MX, abit overclocked, and it works okay....I am looking into getting a 5600, especially now that HL2 is comming out soon!

Anyone know where I can get a good price on the 5600, I am trying ebay now.

Post Fri Jun 27, 2003 6:02 am

Beleive it or not I run this game on a geforce 2 gts. i paid like 60 bucks for the card well over a year ago, and with only 256 ram and windows xp freelancer is NEVER laggy, at any point (well graphically, online i get lag, but that is irrelevent to vid card)

In reference to the CineFX engine, I strongly believe it is something that will never really catch on. The reason? ATI doesn't support it. I just find it hard to believe a developer would right a graphics engine that less than half of their market can utilize
