Has anyone beat SP in a light fighter?

Well, heavy fighters need to have at least one little advantage or nobody would use them.

Because light fighters cannot use torpedoes - apart from tractoring them in and selling them for cash, I mean - and because the powerplant of the Patriot is so weak I just used up a full supply of the expensive Driller mines (more than $35000 credits) during mission 12, and even so I ran out of mines shortly before the 3rd generator was destroyed. Starkiller torpedoes have slightly more bang, the same refire rate, and are much less expensive (not to mention that you can launch them much further away than mines). I got the 2-minute warning about 5 km away from the jumphole and so I don't think I would have made it through this mission without the mines.

I did not want to swap any of the guns for a missile launchers because I wanted to have all four guns for fighting the reception committee at the other end of the jumphole.

P.S.: yes, I beat the game in a Patriot. I mounted the finest equipment I could get (class 3 graviton shield, Adv. Thruster, 4 x Adv. Scorpion) and in the later missions I also used about $100000 credits' worth of Driller mines and a few sips of Loch Lomond single malt. It was actually easier than with the Dagger.

I did it with a hawk....

"I'd hang myself...but I'm afraid of heights, I'd drug myself, but can't stand pills, I'd have a lethal injection, but can't stand needles, Cut my wrists, if I could stand the sight of blood, drown myself, If I could swim, burn myself, If I weren't a winter person..."

I haven't tried yet...

I'd imagine it'd be pretty easy to beat flying the Legionnare, or the Hawk.

I went through Patriot, Defender, Drake to Hawk and finished SP with it. There is nothing to comment about Patriot or Defender, Drake however is very agile ship. After I moved to Hawk (though this one is also named "light fighter" I realized the huge difference. If I ever fly the game from start up I would pick Drake over Hawk.
Hawk, Falcon or Eagle stay pretty close in terms of manuverability in my book. The last SP missions with LF were exhausting in the sense that using only guns (I did not mount missiles on LF) took significant time to wear the targets off. On the other hand, for example in tha last mission I remmember I found such position where no one was shooting at me, so it was only question of time to finish the targets one after another.

Got a chance to do both the Drake and the Hawk to the end of SP. I love having two games going at once!

To conclude the Drake is a very manuverable ship and really helped a lot on not getting hit as much during the last stages as I was almost out of sheild bats and nanobots.

The Hawk was a little more of a brusier for a light fighter it would be fun to mod this ship with a lvl 8 shield/weapon set up then watch out VHF lovers.
Playing through SP in a light fighter was a real challenge when you are limited by weapon load out and space but worth it for the fun factor alone and bragging rights later.

Anyway thanks to all who posted here the info. was fun and enlighting.

Good Flying Out There All.

Just some thoughts from the edge of space.

I just finished the SP in a Drake. I went through all of the weapon stats carefully and realized the the Vulture weapons give the best bang for the energy use. I went all over Kusari space to track down these weapons sold only at Kagoshima base. I loaded up 2 class 5's and 2 class 6 Vultures on my Drake. It was a very powerful ship with the ability to maintain constant fire for over 30 seconds. It was very effective in taking out Kusari gunboats. I took a Reihnland Battleship out with it and I did finally drain my energy reserves down before I took it out. The Drake was so effective, it made the final missions a lot easier. I saved the game at the battleship Osirus before the final mission, I tried the Drake and the Anubis in the final mission. I couldn't stand flying the Anubis, it got hammered severely while the nimble Drake would hardly get hit at all.

hmmm... we really really need the adventurous person to do the entire game in a starflier. Then, they can truly brag of their skills.

I'm a lousy pilot. I finished it in a Hawk. Couldn't survive in anything bigger. I tried swiching to the Defender and got stuck on a mission around Cal Minor. Ran out of money to repair the ship and had to reload the savegame with the Patriot. Tried the Crusader in Britonia. Got blown into pieces by the Rhinelanders. Switching to the Cavalier got me through that part of the sp. The last ship in the Heavy series I tried in the campaign was the Anubis. Didn't mange to survive in that thing either. In the end, I had to reload the savegame with the Hawk to finish the sp campaign.

The Starflier is the second-most manoeuverable ship in the game (after Patriot, on par with the fabulous Drake), and if you fly such a ship you can stick your neck a bit farther out than in any other ship of that class ...

The Patriot was much easier, though.

has anyone tried with the Banshee? It is the highest rated light fighter (most armor, weapon level, and such). I was just wondering about the manueverability.

topher, you cannot get the Banshee before you have beaten the campaign (although you get to look at it during mission 10, as a teaser). With the Banshee it would be way to easy to be fun.

If you want major ownage then slap Xeno guns or the Outcast Pyros thingies on a Drake ...

The Banshee has very strong armour and a powerplant that is so strong that you can fire the four guns pretty much continuously. It is not as manoeuverable as the Drake but it is still agile enough to be classed as a light fighter, and it can take on any fighter - including Titans, Sabres, Hammerheads and Eagles - without any problem even though it is several weapon classes lower.

forgot that its a lvl 20 ship, oops.

I think I might down grade with another saved game and go get that and become a pirate. Not much cargo, but it will do.

Shouldn't this have been in the spoiler forum?

What would be a greater accomplishment is beating the game in a starflier.

One Ring to Rule them all. . .
Okay, Okay, LotR isn't quite the same as Freelancer.

I beat SP in a 57 Chevy twice.

Sometimes you're the Windshield...Sometimes you're the Bug...
