Tachyon is a great game. I highly recomend it. FreeSpace 2 was excellent as well. I don't see how you can go wrong with either one.
One word though, FreeSpace 2 was definately challenging at times. You really need to have your Joystick skills "honed up". It did have a pretty good in game simulator that would walk you through all the basic stuff though.
