Ever Play Tachyon The Fringe ???

While, this may or may not realy pretain to Freelancer I saw a game in the bargan bins called Tachyon the fringe and I was just woundering if anyone has played it...cause judging by the screen shots I've seen it looked very similar to Freelancer, they boasted the ability to hire wing men, Travel to different systems ect.... Just wanted to get some input from others who may have played it b4, to see whether its worth the 10 bucks to pick up or if its so old its not realy relevent anymore.

Its pretty fun, big props to it for Having Bruce Campbell do the voice work for your character, but it plays more like a standard mission based game than an open ended game like freelancer. If you go into it expecting that, then I would recommend it, but if you want to be able to fly around and trade like you can in freelancer, then I wouldn't.

yeah i played it, its very fun

I enjoyed Tachyon more than FL. Same principle of taking jobs, making money and upgrading ships but with a much better story, characters and plenty of humor. You also get to pick which side you want to fight for and when the game is complete, you can go back and play for the other side and fly completely different missions. Scale is much better too. Stations a huge and capital ships are bigger.

Another game to look for in the bargin bin is, Independence War, Edge of Chaos. FL is an enjoyable lightweight summer action movie, IWEOC is a challenging grown up space sim that blows away FL in every aspect, especially in story involvement and graphics.

Play Multiplayer in the weekends.
Arena for PvP combat
Base Wars for team base killing. (get tech level 10, helios rockets and shoot other base Life Support.)

If Tachyon had as large a Universe and as many factions as FL,
it would have been the PERFECT space sim. IMHO

Play is similar to FL, and storyline drags you along same way.
You CAN freelance/explore a bit, before or after missions are over.
That's my only complaint; you can't undock except for a mission.

Freespace 1 & 2 are also good bargain bin games, but you're in a navy.
Goal is to not just finish missions, but get medals. Lots of ships & weapons.
If you want to see H U G E capital ships, get them if you can.

Thank you to every one who replyed. Both games seemed remarkibly similar, as I am a big fan of FreeLancer, I welcome any game that shares such similarites, although I was a bit skeptical due to the age of the game. While game play is improtant to me I find it hard to play a game with graphics that look like it would be at home played on an Atari 2600. But from what I've seen/read that doesnt seem to be the case. Thankyou again for everyones Input...Its greatly appreciated.

Freespace 2 has some freaking amazing missions, almost every of them has unexpected stuff happening that just makes you go "Wow!". I very highly recommend it.

Sometimes I'd just sit out the battles and watch the HUGE capital ships tear each other apart with their badass looking (and sounding) beam cannons.

I wonder if freespace works on my P3 800 and my PS2 styled rumble pad

Thanks for the info I'll have to check that game out to.... I used to play Descent 3, years ago but it always felt so confined. I hated having to worry about graising up against a wall in space lol. I must admit thou and I'm sure die hard sim fans will disagree with me here, but I love the simplicity of the Freelancer controls. While I agree they should of included support for joysticks for those who prefere using them but for someone like me a casuial gamer this game is a God sent. I don't mind the higher learning curve for games that require such attention (IE) flight sims. But I've always been more of a play right out of the box kind of person and I'd shoot through the manual after I had a feel for the game for a lil while. Thanks again for the heads up on Free Space, I'll definitly look into that one.

Freespace 2 is still a classic space sim game that even now still lingers in my memory. I still get a tingle when I think about the Capital ship broadcasting to all fighters to 'clear the area' as its beam tech powers up, then the splendid graphics of the enemy capital ship being literally sliced in two... A great moment in computer space gaming : )

Oh yeah, Tachyon is worth buying also.

Call me strange then. . .

I didn't like Tachyon: The Fringe. The space-flight engine felt like wing commander 1... with the graphics of wing commander 4. It felt just "cramped" and non exciting.

I agree with Nova and Hengist. Freespace 2 is still a great game. The graphics are not up to Freelancer standards but they aren't far from it!
The missions and storyline are great and the beam weapons are awesome.

I thoroughly recommend it (we even occasionally still play it co-op) but the trick is finding the game these days.
