You sound as anally retentive as me, Pressgod !!

It took me a year to play Baldur's Gate 1,2 and all the add-ons. Had to open every door, open every chest, do every quest and subquest, talk to every person !!!!!!

Urghhhhh !

Yes, but in BG did you have to go back and play every character type and play out each romance....

.sig/ What do you mean the game can be played in 50 hours, I've spent about 1000 hours and am on level 1!

Slightly off-topic but, Cupidstunt, does MBUK ring a bell?

I do find the game reletively short, especially after completing the game I was still only Lvl 19. (Not even high enough to buy a banshee. A LIGHT FIGHTER) O.K I can see they worked hard on the FREELANCER part (Actually I can't). But if they want to work really hard on the story at least make it long.

Hey Cupid I prefer the term, proctilogically challenged! And yes I do open every door look in every room seek out every conversation, etc., etc, etc. I does have it's own rewards as you are certain to get your money's worth out of any game you purchase! LOL.

I find in rather humorus that those that complain about the game being this or not enough of that are the ones who rush through and then wonder if that is all there is? Kind of makes you wonder about there love life if you get my drift!

My latest adventure involves doing the SP mission again, 3rd times a charm! Only this time with a light fighter! Should be and is challenging. I have flown almost every ship in the game and I did the SP the 2nd time in the Drom Fun Fun Fun. I would love to get the banshee but not by Modding or cheating. So for now I bought my way into a Hawk as it is the best light fighter I can get.

Do I plan to continue to play even after all of this bet on it none of my games languish for long on the shelf due to neglect. If you wait long enough all that is old is new again!

Just some thoughts from the edge of space!

all the news that no one reads

During SP storyline you will not "jump past" levels. Every second level is mission dependent, and the levels inbetween are money dependent.

Further, it seems that advancement to money dependent levels are not based on your absolute value but on your relative value improvement since last mission. So you can earn a million after mission 1, but after mission 2 you will still have to earn a little more to advance to the next level.

In theory this is true, but you can fly all the story missions back-to-back by lugging the right cargo around during the missions, without any freelancing, pirating, looting of shipwrecks or whatever.

Like others here, I too had noticed things like leveling up right after selling the loot from the previous story mission (M3 Willard) or even when filling my hold with H-fuel (M1/M2). I looked closer at these things and pieced together a plan to solve the campaign with as little free time between story missions as possible.

In my first try I had to take only three freelance missions (I needed to earn $15600 after the end of mission 7, and $12850 after the end of mission 8), and I completed the campain in just 6:31 hours. Surprisingly, money was not a problem and I even had enough to buy a sixpack of Lugers at Bruchsal base during mission 10, for mounting on the Anubis later.

Since then I have tweaked the plan so that freelancing can be avoided altogether, but it works only if you fly Bounty Hunter junk (Piranha, Barracuda) instead of Cavalier and Drake, because the latter do not have enough cargo space. The time savings is insignificant since the Kyushu freelance missions can be completed in 3-4 minutes each and freelance missions out of Kyoto Base do not take much longer either.

Ok.. heres my theory on all this mumbo-jumbo...

Microsoft F**ked up BIG 'OL TIME.. cuz if u look at the general layout of the game... its an RPG... where your character happens to be a starfighter/freighter whichever u prefer.. and u add weapons, shields.. etc.. to it... and this worked VERY VERY well....

with privateer.. granted yes chris roberts.. the same guy that made privateer made this game.. but they didnt put enough into it... the story takes like.. no time at all.. i whipped out privateer the other day n started playin it.. the game is COMPLETELY non-linear... thats what i didnt like about freelancer.. its too linear.. in privateer u could go ahead and do whatever u wanted.. freelance or go on with the storyline.. thats what they should have done here.. while making the "level" system jus a little bit more challenging.. i mean come on.. i beat this game 4 times in less than a week.. thats pretty pathetic.. i do have fun afterwards to an extent.. theres alot of stuff to explore.. omicron and all that.. but theres no plot to the game after u finish the campaign.. so my theory about this summed up is : the game shouldve been less linear and they should have given the player more freedom on what they can and cannot do at a certain point.

Besides that though... this is probably one of the better games ive ever played

I was starting to get a bit bored with it until I discovered the joys of pirating in a Titan with really good weapons in Liberty Space... Really quite humorous.

Sherlog,

I know that you don't have to actually make a trade run to momentarily increase your player value. I can also explain why:

All goods in the game have a "standard" value. I do not know if it is an average of the price at all bases, the median (is it also called that in English) or something else. But anyway, the game bases the current value of the cargo in you hold on this standard value, rather than basing it on the trade value at the current/nearest base.

So if you for example buy 1 unit of diamonds at a price of 176, while the game's standard value of diamonds is 660, your player value will immediately increase with 660-176 = 484 credits even though you have not travelled one inch with the goods.

Of course, you can also do the opposite: Lowering your player value momentarily by buing an overpriced commodity.

Yes, value underestimation is the basic principle for making the zero-freetime approach work, plus choosing goods that provide a nice balance between underestimation on one hand (necessary for fast progress) and profits on the other (because you need at least some spare cash for equipment).

Theoretically it should be possible to achieve a similar effect via overestimation, with the added benefit of keeping the cargo hold free for loot during missions. However, I do not think there are good opportunities for this along the path of the campaign.

You can actually see the nominal price of any good in-game - it's what a commodity fetches at a base that doesn't trade it (i.e. where the good is not listed in the info screen for the base under commodities selling/buying).

There is also a certain glitch in the game logic that makes it possible to achieve the desired effect with lower numbers of units (read: smaller cargo space) than would be needed for underestimation alone to do the trick. Otherwise it would not be possible to do a zero-freetime run using only fighters, or a nearly as fast almost-zero-freetime run using only light fighters like Patriot, Cavalier and Drake (which are my personal favourites).

I can post the details of the glitch in the spoiler forum if you like, but not here. It's not new actually. I think I saw it mentioned there, at least specific cases (think 'Liberty' and 'H-fuel').
