Freighters... are they utterly weak or is it just me?

I tried piloting a freighter sometime into the Kusari campaign, and let me tell you... I was just plain disappointed. It was like flying a gigantic target that used rice-paper for shields and moved like Ebert after a 12 course meal.

But it got even -better- when I attempted to operate the turrets. Let's just say that if you stop flying that thing for a whole of 5 seconds, you die. A Molly pirate wing could rip me a new one faster than if I tried to do it myself. Better yet, there is a complete lack of any sort of automated turret fire that -all- the computer opponents seem to have.

Last but not least, your shields are on par with fighter shields, making you... you guessed it. A chubby kid who dislikes confrontation in an endless sea of pedophiles.

Someone, anyone, everybody, PLEASE! Don't let them release the patch without attending to us poor freighter pilots! FREIGHTER PILOTS ARE PEOPLE TOO! FREIGHTER PILOTS HAVE FEELINGS! FREIGH- *dragged off screaming by several burly men in white uniforms*

freighters were never meant to fight. They are made for cargo runs. If you want to fight, get an eagle

Don't you mean they're not weak -enough-? Seriously, any game where freighters can go off on their own and make 300k in thirty minutes is doing something seriously wrong. Where is the point of hiring escorts and such? Or travelling in convoys? I don't know why the game doesn't allow groups to share the cost of purchasing commodities and the profit from selling them.

Because of M$

Why didn't I register the day after?

Post Mon Apr 07, 2003 6:06 am

Yup, because of M$. They wanted to dumb the game down and they sure did a good job of that on some things...

anyway, buy a dromedary, it moves just a little worse than the titan.

if u want to fly straight forward without being able to move, buy a humpback

Post Mon Apr 07, 2003 9:34 am

If you're flying a humpback just make sure you have good rear turrets and the best thruster and run while firing at the bogeys behind you. Mines help too.

You can't expect to win a dogfight in a freighter, so my suggestion is to trade in systems with few or no hostile factions. A fully decked out dromedary or humpback can take anything in the Liberty and Bretonia systems without using bots or batteries, so just stay there.

you can safely course thru the borderworlds if ur neutral to most factions there. or else you might wanna get a full load of nanobots and shield batteries. and some experience in freighter dogfighting. but i;m guessing the drone is better as i saw it dogfighting outside some station.

presently, my world is upside down, so if u do not mind, u'll have to tok to my a$$

Are you guys saying I'm going to have to give up my beloved Rhino? How can this be?! How patently unfair of anyone to design a game where I have to trade in my ship just to meet the pesky requirements of the system I want to fly in. I know! I will just make my Rhino invincible and with infinite hold capacity (I know it can be done, I've been on hold with Microsoft and it was infinite). Then I'll modify the commodities so I can buy for 1 and sell for a million two adjacent stations! I'll be rich!!!!!

Of course, it won't be much fun.

Perhaps instead I'll try all of the different ships and while freighting is fun I understand I won't be able to take my Volvo 5-ton to the Indianapolis speedway...

.sig has been time-looped, please check back yesterday for further information.

In the single-player game, I certainly wouldn't use freighters in the story missions (at least, not the later ones), but for multi-player it could be fun. Just fly in formation with a friend who has a fighter, go to turret-mode, and blast away! Get multiple freighters in formation with one fighter and it could get pretty crazy!

Ya the frieghters would become mobile weapons platforms. Ive done it with 2 other people. 2 fighters and me in a humpback and it worked quite well.

@Captain Flint

The problem is that there isn't a freighter to upgrade to beyond the Humpback. You're stuck with using a VHF, if you want "the best". Let me put it another way, the most expensive freighter costs about 1/5 the cost of the most expensive fighter.

MS claims that this is a game where you can choose your profession, and while that might be true, there really isn't a lot of game content when it comes to cargo ships and trading. Basically, it's only the means by which you aquire a VHF, and then trading is obsolete. Perhaps this heavy focusing on combat and fighters is why a more realistic economy was given a low priority somewhere along the line.

Humpback may be the best armored, but its turning rate sucks donkey nuts...I'll take a dromedary over it any day.

The only, ONLY problem I have with the freighters is that they have too many weapons and not enough evasive-geared stuff (say, an extra countermeasure mount instead of mines, maybe a second thruster)

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

Officer: "Freelancer, what happened to the transport you were escorting?"
Me: "He told me my ship looked wierd...I invited him to have intimate relations with my SunSlayer"

Please don't misunderstand, I'm not saying a freighter should be able to fight a wing of fighters... no sir. What I am saying is that it should bloody well be a -freighter-- not a fatarse with fighter shielding. It should be a fatarse with freighter shielding! Freighters are meant to survive, and as it stands now, turret weaponry is a minor deterrent at best, regardless of the versatile arcs of fire. So what would it hurt to give freighters proper shielding? Granted they still shouldn't be able to burn through pirate territory by themselves.... Hmm... might be a more complicated issue than I thought.

Also someone else mentioned that freighters are imbalanced because they gain levels like an EverQuester with a case of Bawls and a bag of Milky Ways. Let me just say now that anybody that thinks that has their head up their butt for making a comparison between gaining levels as a fighter as opposed to as a freighter. Two different ballparks, folks. Prey and predator. Figure it out. I could go on and on but I shall leave it at that and hope you get the point.

My Dromedary and it's array of class 5 and 6 guns/turrets tore anything apart that tried me. You just have to be able to manage it on multiple levels.

Go forward at a mid range speed, go into turret mode, blast some people. Hit H to turn when evasive action is needed or you gotta head back at the target.

I used Outcast weaponry on my Dromedary, I only was in threat of dying once. Pissed off one too many Bounty Hunters.

It's also rather impressive when you demolish a fighter wing with it.
