@Lemlestarn
I agree that VHF are the top of the line ships in this game to match the primary action of combat while freighters and trading take on secondary roles. Still, I enjoy that part. Even in a VHF where the only "hold" space is the glove compartment I will probably continue to trade, though I may have to alter my cargo to a much more lucritive market (can you say black)
In the meantime, my Rhino will by plowing the ether on another trade run carrying a load of Oxygen over to Westpoint...
Cheers all,

Hey! I've had a dromedary since misson 10 I have not once been blown to heck
if you get into something thick afterburn, auto pilot to somewhere and drop
mines like mad. I actually kill a fair amount of enemies that way and with turret
firing it only takes practice.
PS but I actually sold my FR for a VHF towards the end of the game cause the odds are just so stacked agianst you.

let me get this straight, you are actually trying to fight with a frieghter?
nono...don't even go there, hell I don't even waste credits on turrets even on the big bad humpback.
just grab the shield in helgoland the adv countermeasure dropper and your good to go...if you get in a jam at a jumpgate just head for the hole at the last second
press DOCK and cyaaa your cool with shield/bots/bats.
as for trade-lane disruptions it took me a sec to figure this one out=/ the AI is sooo stupid which ever way you get kicked out of lane press your cruise and head off that way, the enemy ships arent near you yet..and gradually turn back on course, this is where your countermeasures ADVANCED come into play..
I have it down pat pretty much

Freighter=lightly armored gunship. Seriously, though. Add on the shields and you get a gunship with a cargo hold.
Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless
Officer: "Freelancer, what happened to the transport you were escorting?"
Me: "He told me my ship looked wierd...I invited him to have intimate relations with my SunSlayer"

I think the freighters are pretty well balanced in this game. The good freighters all carry at least 100 units more than the VHF's, they can live long enough to run away from a fight (I've done this several times running in the edge worlds/border worlds in a humpy no less). And, they can carry enough firepower to take out lesser wings of fighters.
What it sounds to me is that people haven't had enough time to *learn* how to drive the freighters correctly. By correctly, I mean in a manner that will let you kick ass and still live. The best advice I've seen on this board and I've worked with in the game is to make good use of the autopilot. If I get jumped/lane hacked, I would set my autopilot to the next lane ring/waypoint, then go straight into turret mode. While in turret mode, I keep strafing, afterburning and braking. It's very effective at throwing enemy fire from your ship. It does take practice though.
Better yet, travel in a group with a couple of people on the server with you. that's the best way to go. They take care of trouble while you keep going forward on your business.
As for make a freighter with better shields, consider the transports in the this game. none of them have shields. just a lot of armor or something. In fact, you can selectively target cargo pods on the larger transports and steal goods without kiling the ship. Again, though, the main idea behind a transport is to carry crap, not duke it out with anything. that's the escorts job.
