What are your weapon pref''s - does the fire rate factor in?

I've collected each and every Class 10 weapon in the single-player game (2 of each and the total of 4 Guardians), and have tried numerous weapon configurations. For sheer firepower/energy usage balance, I really like the Firekiss MkII. A problem with most higher-class weapons is the (generally) slower refire rate and the immense power drain. I currently fly the vhf Border Worlds Saber and have outfitted it with , thanks to the GMG, six SkyBlast B guns and a SkyBlast B turret. Many of my friends have argued with me regarding this setup and my reply is simple: Picture a 44 calibre pistol blowing holes in a target. Now picture a 30 calibre machine gun firing at a similar target. Generally, the machine gun will do more damage over a given period of time. 244 Hull/122 Shield per shot may not seem like much, but when you have a refire rate of 8.33 and all hardpoints decked out, well, you do the math. When it rains, it pours!

I prefer 4 shots per second. Slower firing weapons tend to do more damage per second. But I can't really stand 2 shots per second guns. I'm was using a combination of nomad cannons and blasters which are 3.03 and 4.0 and they seemed to work well, the variance in firing seemed to put out a pretty good stream. But atm I'm experimenting with Nomad Cannons (3.03) and WILD FIREs (2.0)

I like a 4.00 weapon load out, although most of my weapons dont have that good a range. Might switch to a couple of 8.33 after reading that Pistol/Machine gun thing

Give it a try, Fallen_Angel. Hope you let all of us here know what you think about such a setup. Good hunting!

Doing the math, it looks like a Skyblast B can pump out 2032 hull damage per second, and a Nomad gun lays down 2540 per second. I'll stick to my class 10's, thank you very much

Except that your nomads fire fewer shots per second than Skyblast B's, making misses that much more costly. I kill faster versus NPC ships with 4 Skyblasts B's and Firestalker/Neutralizer combo. I actually was able to consecutively kill 425 Xenos without docking and maybe 10-20 seconds between waves. 2 seconds of Skyblast B fire at an oncomming ship goes through em pretty fast. Can also change targets more quickly, hit targets moving by me at any rate of speed, and range is never an issue because I'm always flying with engine killed on afterburner control only.

And that is a valid point. However, one thing not to overlook is that VHF's are limited to how many class 10 weapons you can mount (unless you've modded, naturally). Since the SkyBlast B gun is class 9, one would be able to populate every hardpoint, including the forward facing turret on the Saber. The following example highlights this. Yea, I know that shield damage is always half of hull, but a few might not know this yet. Besides, I'm defending my opinion <grin>. 2,032 x 7 = 14,224 Hull / 1016 x 7 = 7112 Shield per second. Yikes! Now that's what I call serious weapon burst capability and accuracy with mediocre power drain. Neato!

That is, of course, if you hit all your shots onto the enemy ships. If you're like me, MP lag can get ugly, and with fighters bouncing around the screen, those puny 8.33 shots are not going to do much. 4 is a balence of firepower and speed. 8.33 is more suppression, like a jet fighter, while 2 is heavy blows, like a B-2 bomber. But does it really matter? There is no best weapon, just depends how good you are, and how much lag you get.

I can see you're point, CheezyPoof, there are some factors to consider when choosing a loadout. Since I despise online games, the 8.33 weapons work great for me because I don't have to factor in negative anomalies such as lag. I also agree that there is no "best" weapon. It's just a matter of opinion and personal preference, hence the title of this Discussion Topic. Likewise, you make yourself sound like a person that uses 8.33 weapons just aren't good or skilled. In my experience, I believe it takes a bit more skill to bring down an enemy with faster refiring weapons due to the fact that it takes a certain level of precision to keep the crosshairs on an enemy when hitting him with "puny" shots. With 2, 3.03, or 4 weapons, I usually find myself putting on the chase with afterburners on and waiting and waiting until the enemy is close enough so my slow firing weapons will slam into his hull doing max damage. Whereas with the 8.33 weapons, I can keep the crosshairs trained on him and let the sparks fly! That is, however, just my opinion. If it doesn't work for you, or you just don't like it, great. More power to ya. Peace out and good hunting to all!

Now you've got me wondering, so I'll have to go get a sabre and some Skyblast B's and try this out. Although I have to say, ever since I tried this Eagle, I'm not too fond of the Sabre's handling...and without that 7th slot I doubt if the damage is comparable to Nomads...but I'll try, you got your point across

mmm it really depends on your style i think

the 2.0 guns i played with; some ships just come apart with two shots, lol <Mollys>... but i am a dogfighter and dueler; developed that style early on all sorts of games, space and 'mech.

because of the way i pilot/dance, i mix my weapons up but generally go for faster firing rates, with a heavy or two just for breadth. I like an 8.33 for tracking, wasting a weapon slot i know <shrug> then 5.33s and maybe a 4, saving the turret slot <Saber> for a heavy shield-stripper. I prefer to be nimble, because my targeting reflex has been developed over long time and i can hold track while flipping spastically around a target.

also, a fast-spitting weapon with a long range can blind the target momentarily while you skew and close from another angle with the heavier guns <this includes NPC ships>. They lose a picosecond or so trying to track your new location n that's nice to have.

833 fire rate those Reaver Mark II really pack a punch.. I cant win against bounty hammerheads without them. i tried putting diomedes, wild fire, they are just too slow to accurately shoot those dudes, suddenly you have 16 Bounty Hammerheads on you ass.. and im never going to fight in a Titan again.. its too TURTLEish.. sold it for reclaiming my sold eagle.

I hate Wasp Missiles[!

In PvP the thing that matters most is shot velocity imho. Anything else is secondary.

Post Sun Apr 13, 2003 7:56 pm

For PVP I can see that as being more important than versus NPC's. NPC's are so predictable that it doesn't matter how long the bullet takes to get there cuz you know what they're gonna do. PVP can be much more unpredictable and random, so if the bullet is too slow, they may have changed course and you'll miss completely. It's better to hit with a weaker weapon than to miss with a strong one.
