I try to outfit my ship with mostly big hitting weapons with a slower rate of fire, but I like to leave at least one with a high rate of fire. It sucks when you're tailing a target and he's two or three shots left to die and trying to hold him in your sights while the guns power back up. Plus it works well as a tracer shot, but you have to adjust your aiming a bit, do to extreme differences in projectile speed when using 2 weapons from opposite ends of the specturm.

Personally i prefer the 8.33's, partly due to the effect or 'coolness' factor, but also 'cause its the nearest thing you can get to a beam (continuous fire) weapon available without the recent mods (away from home at the mo, pretty sure my 350mhz sloth would cry if i tried FL on it)
I've got a sabre with 2 ***** blasters and 2 ***** cannons - which i think have 2.00 and 3.03 Rof respectively - and 8.33s in the other two + turret slots. I know alot of people say you should pick your other slots to match the *****'s projectile speed for aiming accuracy but i figure that i'm not aiming dead on most of the time anyway - if a few off my shots are off the cross-hair, what the hell they might do some damage anyway.

Those blasters are 4 ROF.

And I really think that matching speed is important, especially since it's always the high damage guns that are slower, so they're the ones that miss. Either that, or you can aim ahead of the targeting reticule and force your faster gun to miss, but that's hard to do consistently, esp. on angling shots.

Being more of an X-Wing vet, I strongly prefer faster fire rates over more powerful guns. That, and my experience with the stupid Ramecurse turrets on my Humpback on Elite really bothers me. So I got Flashpoints, and I havn't been happier Anyway, 8.33's seem to work much better for me. I like to hug my enemies up close, and spray them with 8.33's to make 'em dance. And most mines layed down tend to be blown up before they can move. Can someone say "BONUS!"?

But I guess it's all playing style really. Not everyone is a Star Wars vet. Even my friend plays with different ships and guns than me. He opts for Titan over Eagle, and them big guns over my little 8.33's. But he doesn't mind. "If they get the job done..." he says

That's what it all comes down to...what gets the job done. For some people the slow ones work better, for some the fast, and for some (me) the ones in the middle. It's just about how you play/fight. That's why there's so many different options.

Some basics for multiplayer:

* Rate of fire is not as important as projectile speed.

You can get away with it in the SP missions, but weapons slower than 700 m/s have no place in multiplayer. As ships dance in lag, you have no chance of hitting them with slower 600 or 500 m/s weapons.

* Keep your ranges within 100m of each other.

It is stupid to field a weapon that reduces your range by 150, 200 or even 250m. You cannot possibly switch the weapons in real-time, so you end up wasting power shooting all the weapons when the enemy is beyond the range of one weapon subset. MATCH THOSE RANGES, whenever possible.

* Avoid mixing weapons with drastically different fire rates

Basically, 8.33 doesn't mix well with anything else, it throws off your shot timing for the slower weapons. The whole point of slower fire rates is you have more time to correct and line up your shot, and potentially raise your hit percentage, but the 8.33 weapons mixed in will give you a distraction. Combine this with lag, and you do terrible.

2.0, 3.03 and 4 can be mixed together somewhat.

I personally prefer 4.0 fire rate weapons as soon as I can get them, and conveniently enough all Bretonian Tacheyon weapons are 4.0. Getting a pair of Rippers and possibly a pair of Scorpions makes for a helluva capable craft.

I really love the 3.03 Tacheyon-based weapons, like the Wyrm and Luger series ( they're basically the same thing ).
