Demo Sounds issues?

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Demo Sounds issues?

If you hear missing game sounds throughout Freelancer then a different audio codec is probably being used rather than the one provided by Freelancer.

Please follow these steps if some sounds and speech are still missing after installation.

1. Uninstall any 3rd party codec pack or the Nimo Codec pack from your system.
2. Uninstall Freelancer.
3. Go to the following directory, C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the file “l3codeca.acm”. If there happens to be another file named “l3codecp.acm”, delete this too.
4. If your system is Windows 98 or ME, open the system.ini file located in your system folder; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Delete ONLY the line that starts with “msacm.l3acm=”. In the case of the Nimo codec pack, this will read “msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm”
5. If your system is Windows 2000 or XP, open the system registry editor (regedit) from the RUN command window.
6. Locate and delete the following key: \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm
7. Load the Freelancer installation CD and locate the REDIST folder. Within the REDIST folder, double click on the file named “WMFADist.exe” and follow on-screen instructions.
8. Install Freelancer.

Remember: If you are not familiar or comfortable with modifying the contents of the system registry, then please ask a qualified person for assistance.

Hm... if someone else would have asked for qualified assistance there would be no need to mess around with the system to get the game running in the first place.

Just kidding. I'm sure they did their best to make the game as flawless as possible.

So this is what you're telling me? To avoid issues with a demo and quite possibly the final version of the game I'm going to have to uninstall all the codecs from nimo and therefore lose a good chunk of my multimedia compatibility just to play this game? Ok now I am righteously peeved off.

There have been reported problems that this created so take care when u do this. The problems werent major, its just that the sounds got worse.

Just to mention something no one else seems to want to acknowledge. Windows is a Microsoft product. True it does a fine job running software that was not created by the owners of the OS code, but on occassion there are problems. Most of these problem can be avoided with some VERY simple rules of thumb...

1. Keep EVERYTHING updated.
2. Do a little computer maintennce every so often.
3. If you are installing some software, and it prompts you to close down other windows before proceeding, don't ignore that request...shut everything down.

How often do you hear of people complaining about software they installed that runs right? Virtually never.

Toned down.

Stinger - you are being a bit condesending (sp?) here... Even I feel a bit talked down to... But concerning the issue above... The problem is that those 3rd party products tamper with the default codecs on the system, making it really hard to code to one standard....

Well it can't be THAT hard to manage since this is the only game I've encountered a problem using codecs with (well, there was one other now that I think of it.. But it was patched within two days of release). I really hope they fix this -- I'll be majorly annoyed if I have to uninstall Nimo for the final version as well.

I'm having problems with the sound (sometimes people don't say anything when they are talking) so thanks for posting!

wonderful.. i've been having sound issues with the prbeta since i bought it, it was ignorable though..

i tried the fix posted here and it did absolutley nothing except make things worse.. now instead of not hearing voices every now and then, there is NO sound at all, other than weapons. no music, no engine noises, no sound effects except weapons. and best of all, still no speech

i dont recommend anyone use this fix

fortunately i fixed it so it is back to normal, but now i am back to my original problem of some missing sounds

argh this is so bad, is this going to be fixed in a patch? if MS doesn't do something about this the game will not sell well at all

Post Sat Feb 22, 2003 6:57 pm

Yeah, the fix did nothing. I have nothing but weapon sounds. . .
