It may be the obvious, but have you upgraded the firmware for your router? I have the same setup but cannot reproduce the behavior you describe (router is a LinkSYS 4port)

You need to forward the following ports for Freelancer to work since it uses the DirectX 8 DirectNetwork API:

Port 6073 UDP
Port 2302-2404 UDP
Port 2300-2400 UDP

UDP Port 6073 is for an intial connection. 2302-2404 and 2300-2400 are used for both client and server based activities
