You shouldn't worry so much. I play on a server that seems the safest. Never had anyone attack me even though the option is on. The only problem I had was when I was on my trade run. I put all my money into my goods and died on the way, got killed by the AI. When I respawned I had no money or goods. Had to sell all my weapons to start again. However, I got desperate 'cause that would of taken ages. So I asked some people on the server if they could lend me some moneny 'cause i'd lost everything.
You know what. A nice guy came from miles away to give me weapons and 30k. He escoted me on my trade run and I ended up doubling the money, hence the reason I was on that trade route. Then he took me somewhere I could make even more. Managed to get over 100k in about half an hour. Paid him back and then he left.
See its not all doom and gloom. I do understand why your worried but not all servers are like that. Yeah some servers have lag even though their ping was high when you connected, however, you don't know what sort of bad ping other people are connecting with. They will effect the ping to. Yeah its annoying when you can't get on your server 'cause its full and if they crash before you safe, but thats the risk you take. Always look out for the flashing red monitors, if they start appearing, try to dock to save.
Now, I carried on my trade run for a while and racked up over 500k. On the way a guy called Jango contacted me. We chatted and now we just fly about 2gether. We don't piss anyone off. Infact we help people who need it. We carry on the trade route to get loads of money. I hit a cool 1 mill last night and brought my long awaited Eagle. Then one guy asked "Anyone wanna help out a newbie". So I said "Yeah sure hang on". When I got there I gave him 50,000 and all the weapons I picked up from any bandits that tried to attack me.
I was all for single player before I tried multiplayer on Sunday. Now I can never go back to single player. Its so boring. Why you say when its the same game, without the story. Well 'cause it feels so lonely. When your on multiplayer, you fly about and see other people. You can trade, join groups, get protect. Its great.
Find a nice server like the one I'm on and then stick with it for a bit and you'll love it.
