ELITE server going down for DAYS? wtf??

Want help in running a persistent server? Want to setup a gaming session? Look no further!

Thank you!
I wont mind the work to get back up to where I am now, as long as the server remains cheatfree.
And with the password it will be easier to connect.

Christ people, I cant believe you are whining about rebuilding a character that took you all of 5 days to make.

I played the game for less than 5 days, and I had a loaded Eagle with Class 9 weapons...all from simply doing missions legally. This game is WAY easy right now...this isnt that big of a deal.

I'm not sure how rebuilding/password locking the server will change anything, but it wont stop me from playing. Elite is still better than everything else I've tried in the global lost so far. And it's one of the few servers where the Admins actually give a crap about stopping cheaters.

Actually, since they are restarting anyways, I wonder if they could alter the prices of stuff to make it harder to get. Making class 9 weapons cost $250,000 or even half a million a piece would make the game last longer.

Well in defense of some of us who don't have a lot of time to play this game...that would be me! It can take us a while longer to get our characters up and at the higher levels... not that doing this is bad or anything...I agree it should be done... just sucks.. oh well...ahhh...now I'm over it, heh heh

i can relate to mav......we don't have 24-7 unlike some ppl here

Starting all over, from scratch eh? mmmmm......>=(

Post Sun Mar 23, 2003 1:47 pm

hmmm, does the game remember the password uve entered?
cause i dont want to enter like 30 times the pass and then notice that the server is still full...

i guess it was about time for me to finally create an account in this forum...

i do believe it was a very good decision to delete the accounts and put a password on the server - as of now Elite is pretty much the only server i played on for more than like a day, it sure is nice to know that the admins care about what's happening on their server and it is even better to know that the average server-hopper won't get in anymore as this probably solves two problems at once - the cheating will go down dramatically and there might be more than a "2 second window" to join the server before its full again (can't believe i actually spent 1 hour tryin to get into the server once.. )

as for the other cheaters - those who make the effort of obtaining the password to create a new account are probably going to stay for a while so i just say we ALL should watch out for people who happen to lvl way too fast (1 -> 38 in 1 sec ) or fly around with 1xxxxx dmg mines and make their names public somewhere. now knowing those names the majority of people could watch out for them basically not leaving them alone at all as it is quite rare to be the only one in a system for a longer period of time
so my suggestion is that everyone does look out for those people then and whenever they see something that obviously isn't right report it to one of the admins who then might ban the account after like 5-10 different! reports - this would help us get rid of the remaining cheaters and it would keep someone from being banned because of one or two people accusing him simply because they don't like him or whatever other reasons he/she/they might have.

as for raising the prices:
going from 120 grand to 250 for the class 9 weapons does make a difference of 130 per piece or 260 total as the other 4 guns will probably be class 10 anyways which is and always will be found -> for free
so the difference would only be 1 trading trip which takes like 10-30 minutes to do - this won't really affect the "lot-of-time" players (gotta admit - i'm one of them ) at all but those who don't have much time anyways, those who it does take long to get to a decent lvl/ship will be affected by this as half an hour can be quite long if you only have like an hour per day
so the thing is - raising the prices won't really help making the game more challenging for those with a lot of time but it will support the unbalance of the game as those who do take long already will now take even longer to get their ships-of-choice

as for resetting the accounts: i don't believe it is a bad thing to do, my guess is that after a few days - a week max. everyone will be back to what they had before (some will already be at that point after a few hours)
but it might bring some good things with it, too
i suppose we all know that trying to do them long runs in the beginning not only makes it harder than it had to be but also is booooooooooriiiiiiiiing so i believe that once the server is up there will finally be some new groups - maybe even some really big groups going to get together and get some trading done as a team which not only makes you use that formation command again after weeks but also might actually help you get to know new people on the server who you could group up with for a longer period of time than just the early stages and i do believe that most of you will agree that a game is way more fun when its not played alone (which probably is why we don't all play in SP in the first place)

just my 2 cents

ps: anyone wanna group up once Elite is back on tonight?

I work 10 hour days 5 days a week, and I managed to do it without even trying. Meaning that I even spent a lot of time exploring. It's not that hard. In Bering with a loaded Hawk I was making $35,000 a mission. After a few hours I could afford a Falcon. A few hours after that I was buying an Eagle. The only hard part was buying the Hawk.

I mean, you should NOT be able to get one of the best ships in the game from 5 days of play...period. When I played Everquest (before the game degenerated into a bunch of twiking and powerlevelling), it took me about 18 months to get to level 45. Even twinks sometimes take WEEKS to get to that level. Being given the best stuff in the game takes away the challenge IMO. And it takes away from the reward factor. Oh...and uh...if the game were more difficult, it would be a LOT easier to spot cheaters using money hacks.

As it stands now, I've heard people getting loaded Titans in as little as 4 hours of play, legally. That is just ridiculous.

Correct...assuming the price increase was limited to weapons. I only used weapons as an example. And Class 10 guns SHOULD be a "prize"...Nomad weapons shouldnt be some kind of entitlement. They should difficult to get.

An even better solution would be to add item decay, but that would probably be a lot more involved on DA's part.

it probably would be nice to get a price on class 10 weaps but this won't be acomplished by the server admins - in order to get this done u either need an update by MS or DA or some modder at work... as i'm pretty sure you can't just set a "shoot-this-wreck-and-loose-2million-tag"

as for having to play for weeks or longer to get to a high lvl/ship:
in general it would for sure be nice to actually be confronted with a challenge in lvl'ing but with the server system being as it is now i don't believe it would be such a good idea as playing for weeks getting a good ship and then realizing that the server went down or its resetted or whatsoever...well... it sure would get me pissed
if it was up to me there should be some kind of a "battle.net-clone" for FL (with better anti-cheating solutions than blizzard uses though and then an update which makes the game way more challenging basically changing the game into a real space-rpg instead of the pretty much pure deathmatch game it is now (at least for me that is)

Post Sun Mar 23, 2003 9:14 pm

i was surprised that microsoft wouldn't let FL be on zone....i mean they published it and they won't let u play on zone????? i guess that simlpy means don't expect a patch anytime soon (as in ever) cause they just don't wanna deal with it

I like playing on servers that have a constant influx of new players.. The Elite server is basically dead to me once it's password protected.

more room for me then

oh god, OK, no offence to any sysops or anything like that, but I think im gonna uninstall this game for a few months. I had a Sabre with all those weps on it on E2, logged in about 70 hours, i played about 3-4 hours a day (sometimes, rarely 5) I can't believe that the cheating was so bad they had to delete all the characters. I would never cheat at this game, not because of morals, but simply because its a little too easy. So, now that i have suffered the first major blow to my characters on multiplayer, and began to fuly realize the effects of server only characters in freelancer, I think its time to leave the game for something else until I gather up enough nerve to continue playing in about 2-3 months.

E2 has not gone off-line, and none of the accounts on it have been removed (just the few who have cheated).

Elite is the server that is undergoing some changes.

Check out http://flserver.com/serverstatus.htm to see what servers are up, and what their player count is currently at.

I am particularly glad that the Elite server is down for some house cleaning. Not only because it will make it a little more difficult for cheating, but also because it has given me time to finish the single player game. Before the server went down I only played about 1.5 hours in the single player campaign...but, last night, I finished the campaign and am now looking forward to Elite coming back up later on this evening (or whenever it is expected to come back on-line). Cheers.
