Are you playing with freighter or something?

hit shift+w immediately when the race starts and dont drop out of cruise

I'm trying to figure this out, you can use the light figher, the heavy fighter or the a freighter. managing the course is easiet with the light fighter, then progressively worse all the way down to the freighter. The problem is that with the light fighter small asteroids will hit your ship and knock it out of cruise. this gets progressively less of a problem the heaver the ship is all the way to the freighter which doesnt seem to be able to get knocked out of cruise by any asteroids.

Any way you try it, it seems impossibly difficult to do. Since none of the asteroids seem to knock your opponent out of cruise

I got it second try, after I figured out I was supposed to use cruise. I diddnt find it all that hard.

Cool, thanks dudes I was getting frustrated there

It is very easy with a fighter. If you are getting knocked that far off course, you may want to practice flying some more.

maybe its my game, but ever freaking time i try the race i get hit 10 times by asteroids during the race that knock me out of cruise. anyone had this problem?

Maybe you guys need to cut down on your caffeine intake so you will have steadier hands. I've got to this point in the game twice now, once in the beta, one in the real thing, and both times I won the race with no trouble. Don't get discouraged if you're losing for most of the race, I think it's rigged so you automatically catch up and get ahead at the end. Just don't miss any gates.

Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

I guess I'm just not a talented pilot. I've tried fifteen times, 30 races, and I get shot up every time.

I'm running a heavy fighter and let me tell you that the gates will get you every time.

Is there a way around the race?

Thanks,

John

First time through beet him with about 3 rings to go. Second time had him at halfway point. Both times in a heavy fighter. Just engage Cruise immediately, and you can bump him with no ill effects, did that second race. maybe try a 3rd time and put a missile up his tailpipe, hehe, see what happens.

I'm quite confused with some of the posts here....I've never hit an asteroid (that I recall) and I don't think I've ever been hit by more than 1 or 2 shots from the weapons platforms. :? I've gone wide and hit a gate before and also nailed the weapons platform on the inside of the track near one of the final turns, but never had a problem with other issues.

Here are some hints I can give:

1) You must LEARN the track (can take more than a few times). This includes learning the "racing line" of the track. The best path is NOT the shortest path in all cases. Bottom line, if you are having problems with a particluar turn, you most likely took the gate before that one at the wrong angle.

2) Make SURE you start the Cruise Engine with SHIFT-W (or the Cruise ICON under the FREEFLIGHT Icon).

3) I find it easier to to fly in MOUSE FLIGHT, but others may find it easier to use the other mode. Keep in mind that smooth and sweeping turns usually line you up with the next gate better than a sharp turn straight toward the center of the next gate as soon as possible (see #1).

4) Dexter screws up his run near the end, so there is NO reason to be in the lead....you will get a chance to pass him near the finish line.

I have no idea how anyone could be getting shot up (unless you are still in the starflier....). Hint: They sell the Crusader on the Battleship and it's most likely the best fighter you can have at this point in the game (and can easily win this race).

Hope some of this helps.

Also don't forget to set mouse-speed in options to max, then steering is a lot easyer.
Took me 3 times lost 2x with freighter , won the race with light fighter in 1x.
Hmmm what does this button do ?? .....

There are also to methods of flying:

1) Left-click and drag in the direction of desired flight

OR

2) Hit Space Bar, and move mouse freely to travel in desired direction

As said above already, ensure engaging cruise right away by going Shift+W... there's no need to fly to recklessly or taking the corners to sharp as the race is rigged at near the end to make your opponent slow down so that you can catch up.

I hope no one is targetting the waypoint and hitting Go To to initiate cruise mode.
