Eagle, Sabre or Titan?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Well my friend ended up going through all 3 ships in a few hours (with some
money borrowed) and felt that the eagle was the most agile. When fighting
nomads or squadrons of computers power and armor would come more into
play than agility maaaaybe. Probably yeah if you're getting blasted from 10
directions and can't really dodge them. But when it comes to pvp (as is the
only real important thing =) the agility would be the most important factor.
If you can't hit your opponent or even SEE your opponent, you can have
super armor but can't dish anything out. My pvp dogfighting skills aren't
that good as I've only dueled twice but in my sabre they were both against
eagles. Guess who won =P Not me! I'm going to try an eagle out and see
how things go but I pulled a bunch of crazy break, stop, boost, whatever
maneuvers and I could rarely seem to get a shot at my opponent unless he
stood still =P

Of the three, I think the Eagle looks the best, but I like the Sabre the best mostly because its turret can fire forward, the Eagle and Titan's turrets only fire backward and I hardly ever go into turret mode. It is kind of fun to take one of these VHFs into Liberty space. Sure everyone hates you, but when you have a level 10 shield no one can really hurt you much. I set my course then go into turret mode and plink at all the guys following me.

Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

What I'm pondering now, is dividing all 3 Z's by mass, subtracting drag from force, and dividing that by the result of inertia / mass.

Zt = Steering Torque
Zi = Rotational Inertia
Za = Angular Drag

((Zt - Za)/mass) / (Zi / mass) = (Zt - Za) / Zi

If I've understood correctly, the mass will cancel out of the equation.

Unless it's ((Zt - Za)/mass) / (Zi / mass^2) = ((Zt - Za) * mass) / Zi

I'm very curious, what's the formula you're using?

Well, I've used all three ships and I can say, they all rock. They all make you basically invincible. I used all three and fought nomads until I was blue in the face. You just have to adjust your fighting style to match the ship. In the Titan I did a lot of time doing engine-off turns then into afterburners so I could stay ahead of my target. In the sabre and eagle I would just kill the afterburner and turn. I managed to kill probably close to 40 nomads per ship before I got bored and went back to base. If you ask me, the GMG in Omicron Beta are tougher than the nomads. 10 eagles surrounding you is a lot more to take than 4 nomads at a time. So to summarize an already too long post: It's totally preference and fighting style. There is no right/wrong answer.

Jup, there is no wrong or right, against ai you will be fine even in a falcon or hammerhead or titan.

and in pvp, well you will sooner or later notice why you keep getting killed *g*

oh and well, I fly eagle, which is as agile as a starflier. nuff said.

DoomsDay74-

You're absolutely right. In fact, that formula isn't affected by mass at all. So we're back at square one. though I was doing ((Zt / mass) - (Za / mass)) / (Zi / mass).. redundant huh? Amazing what you think up at 3am

How do we compare torque vs drag, in ability to overcome inertia, relative to mass? I wonder if mass even has that much of an effect here.. should try doubling the Sabre's and see if a difference can be distinguished. If mass isn't calculated heavily in handling, I could save a lot of headache trying to get a grasp on the physics.

Quote rcohks:
"Tyrone- Nomad weapons use 0 energy per shot, so yes, if Nomad weapons are on your list of future goals, Energy isn't really a concern. "The Big 3" all have more than enough recharge rate to power 2 class 9 guns and a turret. Though, a pair of Guardians or Cerebus do considerably more damage than 2 of the Nomad Cannons, and it's nice to now exactly what you have to work with in terms of energy consumption in order to maximize firepower combos. I just snagged a quartet of Nomad Cannons last night, and when I get a sec I'm going to see how they play with a pair of Cerebus. Though, I do like the results I've gotten with a set of Wyrm 2's coupled with the Mad Cannons."

actually, no, nomad cannons does the most damage in the game when you calculate the total damage by multiplying the damage by the rate of fire.

Cerebus -
hull: 1173
shield: 586
rate: 2.0
total hull damage: 2346
total shield damage: 1172

Nomad Energy Cannon -
hull: 847
shield: 423
rate: 3.03
total hull damage: 2566.41
total shield damage: 1281.69

so you can see, nomad weapon is indeed the best weapon in the game when talking about theoretcal damage =)

Well, went back to the eagle. It's much more fun to fly. Unless you like driving a bus, which is what the titan feels like after flying the others. Any way to swap values for the ships on the fly ? Just wondering. Once you have a lvl10 shield
not much in the sp can touch you anyway.

@ SloppyJoe

Agreed. The Nomads do the most damage over time. At that point I was comparing first shot damage, which was in the neighborhood of *6000 pts with 4 non-nomad C10's. Depending on your style, skill. and situation, 1 shot may be all you need or want in 1 second . But I agree, and personally prefer holding down the trigger in turning fights

:edit: *4 c10's + 2 c9's + 1 c8 Turret.

Man, that Humpback was a boat. I remember dodging 6 Hessian Stilettos coming out of the Sigma-13-New Berlin jumphole from a dead stop, gah. Good thing that traderoute is so close.

I've tried out each of the ships, and I'm in a Sabre at the moment. I didn't notice a huge difference when I was in the Eagle, and it's a little bit light for me. I'm not extremely comfortable with the profile of the Titan - it always struck me as an easier target. I do like the extra turret, however psychosomatic that may be. Excellent work crunching the numbers! Perhaps someone could try rigourous in-game testing? One could do a turn radius test by starting from a fixed position like a jumpgate or waypoint perhaps?

Post Fri Mar 14, 2003 1:27 pm

One thing I've always wondered about these game is that when you actually do connect with a target, do you get the full value of your weapon, or is some of the salvo shaved off due to shield burn or distance, or whatnot. In some games, I've seen shield burn simulated. Also in my experience, I've found the cerebus/diamondback runs better with two mad blasters than just four nomad weapons. But I guess that all comes down to your shooting style.

I have flown all three. One right after the other. Since looks are opinion based I will leave that part out. So you have to look at the numbers and decide which is best for you.
I found that for dogfighting the Sabre was by far the best. Forward facing turret and tighter turn radius. Also the weapons are spread out really nice.

In the Eagle it seemed as nice as the Sabre except that the turret wasn't firing forward and the weapons were all bunched up so I hated it immediately.

I'm flying a Titan right now and I have mixed feelings about it. The weapons are spread out nice but no forward turret. The damned thing is a tank though and can take a pounding but that is obviously because it makes a pretty easy target because it turns slower and is so darn big.

I would rank them like this:
1. Sabre
2. Titan
3. If the Barracuda had L10 ****s it would be the best but since it doesn't then Eagle.

Weee

Have also flown all 3, started with an Eagle, then switched to sabre, then titan, then back to Eagle. For some reason I have returned to the titan and will probably stay there, I like the extra nano/battery hold, and little extra durable hull for prolonged nomad fights in rad zones.

Actually Yttrasil the Titan and Sabre look nothing like the frickin transport and x-wing from star wars. Not to mention the fact that all three are products of a rather interesting evolution of models (from light fighter to heavy fighter to very heavy fighter... models have "add-on" feel as they progress). Plus I don't get how the Sabre's two-circle styel can be compared to teh obvious X of the Xwing... whatever...

pb8185
i fail to believe that u need to use shield batteries with titan against nomads, and not with other ships
u must be pretty crap then
i dont use shield batteries with titan at all
fighting 3/4 nomads or 5/6/7 bounty hunters or whatever
pfft
