I remember watching Transformers cartoons. When the Contructicons were first introduced, they had been built in caves on Earth by the Decepticons. Then in later seasons, somehow the story changed, and the Constructicons had been on Cybertron, before the Transformers had ever come to Earth. My point? The cartoon had many writers, and between them, they weren't able to maintain the integrity of the story.
What about Freelancer? Seems to me that, apart from some scrapped intro movie, the story is quite stable. The rumour about the sleepers went something like "There were 8, 3 got blown up, one was badly damaged, but still 5 escaped. " Not really paid attention to the intro, and how many ships were there, what got blown up, etc... but I'm thinking that there were different people making the intro movie than there were working on the in-game story. That could account for some discrepancies.
I honestly don't care. I don't care what countries built which sleeper ship, etc... it doesn't matter to me. It would have been just the same to me if they had created totally ficticious nations. I feel that the parallels that the houses in freelancer have to our present-day nations (both now and in our history) only served to allow the creators of the game to be lax in their creativity. Xenos? Anyone who has lived most of their life in North America knows someone (perhaps themself), who has been laid off due to importation of goods, or their company setting up installations in other nations. The Mollys are obviously the I.R.A., not sure about the other factions, but in the case of the Mollys, it's obvious. If you read the news in Rheinland, it's full of propaganda (WW2 anyone?)
I know that in this case the Chancellor had his body snatched by an alien, but still I think it's pretty lame that they parallel Rheinland to WW2 Germany. For the sake of the story, it could just as easily have been any other nation... but... *sigh*.
OK, sorry, I'm going off-topic. But the fact is, this is a game, it isn't real. IMO, better that they didn't parallel current nations to the ones depicted in Freelancer. It would require more creativity on their part, but there would be less questions now. IMO, it's not right that the creators of the story played God with the fate of entire nations from present earth, but try to remember that their opinions have nothing to do with the value of the nations which exist in our present time.
