What''s the deal with "VHF killers"?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

What''s the deal with "VHF killers"?

I've heard that the Drake Light Fighter is a "VHF Killer".

It seems kind of weak, though; just 4 guns that are no more than class 6, 2800 armor, and no torpedo launcher. Can this thing really take out a VHF?

If I wanted to take out a VHF, I would think that something with anti-shield guns and a torpedo launcher would be the most effective...

The drake is considered a VHF Killer because of its agility. When fighting a VHF it can easily sit behind the target and just hammer into it. Pulse weapons to take out the sheilds are a must however.

Attack, Engage, Destroy, Survive

it can as its very agile but then again its rare and you have to be good as about 1 hit from the vhf and boom plus the vhf pilot has to be dumb enough not to realise that a dogfight is not the way to kill a drake (you stay at a distance to minimise the effect of the lf`s agility and kill it from afar)
the falcon is the best non vhf for killing vhfs

If a little Drake came up behind me, I'd just go into turret view and blast the hell out of it. Still, I really don't think VHFs are as crap as people make them out to be. They can EASILY maneouvre well enough to kill a little light fighter.

I'm making record time!
If only I had someplace to be...

Try a balancing mod like Victors mod, and you'll be surprised at how exellent allround the LF's really are. Especially the Drake. Deck it with a hornet, a tiz and nomads and you own all. If you don't, you need more practice.

Edit: Oh, and Corsair; You'll be lucky if you ever hit something in turret mode.

There's also some dispute whether the Drake or the Banshee is the best "VHF killer". I personally like the Drake for its maneuverability, but the Banshee can carry heavier weps, doing about 50% more damage.

U'll be suprised how easy it is to kill a VHF in a drake, especially in an all missile loadout, one of my favourite things to do is to go VHF hunting. I setup up my drake with 2 Catapult Missiles and 2 Sweeper Missile, this setup is very cost effective and can easily take out a titan in a very short time. . When fughting a vhf u have to always stay away from his crosshair, never charge at them head on, if ur good enough u can stay behind them the whole fight . Always keep moving, i usually leave my ship on engine kill and keep hitting thrust the whole fight(never starfe cuz it'll slow u down) With this if they're smart they i'll use a lot of cms, to make sure that most of ur missiles hit just be4 u shoot ur main payload of missiles shoot a wasp at them. The wasp will either hit the cm thus letting ur other missiles hit or hit their ship knocking out their engine kill making them a much easier target Try to be fairly close to them when u launch ur missiles so they're more likely to hit and pull out just before they do.(not pretty seeing a drake get get hit by 4 missiles)

Shadow Slayer, that sounds really good. I never really apreciated missiles except cd's. I like guns, but when Freelancer: Total War comes out, I am going to try missiles. It's gonna be the best thing to happen to Freelancer ever since it came out.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

@Lancer Pilot, read this.

first it goes about tactics and after that more and more over missiles

maybe that helps, and test fisrt with stalker, and go later with the non-stalkers, and use then also emp-missiles.

So if you were going to duel a player who's flying a VHF, do you think you would have more chance to win using a VHF-killer (like Drake or Banshee), or a VHF?

What if you have to fight 12 NPC VHFs?

take the drake with nice weap setup, and toke his agility to ur win

just as i said before, i did 245k missions from malta in a dagger, without backup, without help from others... kill specific person.

What weapon setup would you recommend in a Drake? One shield buster and then the most damaging guns I can find? Or two EMP missiles and two normal missiles?

And what if the mission is "kill all ships" - would it be better to use an HF/VHF then?

i used on it only 4 pyros type 2 (class 5) outcast particle blasters, it's maybe better to use this setup;
- Borroco (class 5 corsair shield buster)
- catapult missile launcher (class 5 non-stalker)
- Pyros type 3 (class 6 outcast particle blaster)
- Pyros type 3 (class 6 outcast particle blaster)

it's easy doable with the drake with the 4 pyros type 2 (class 5) outcast particle blasters, so any ship what cost more is spend off money...

If you have excellent aim, then I suggest the Sabre for any situation, unless you're outgunned against a player. In all other situations with 100% hit ratios (except for AI/NPCs, cause they suck at aiming), you'll usually win in a Sabre =).

Post Mon Feb 23, 2004 1:47 pm

nobody will have a 100% hit on a target the whole time...
