How can I make the single-player game easier ?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

How can I make the single-player game easier ?

I'm a loser.

The games WAAAY too hard for me.

I've been level 8 for about 8 hours played & I'm getting absolutely nowhere.

How can I turn the difficulty level down?
Are there any cheat-codes?
How can I make my FL-life easier?

Exactly which part keeps getting you?

Is your ship outfitted with the best gear you can give it(shields, thruster, nanos/batts, etc)?

What ship is it?

What tactics are you using against the enemies?

What weapons do you have?

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

"Exactly which part keeps getting you? "

It's the whole game, not just parts of it.
I can't seem to make any profit from trading.
I hardly seem able to fight anything without dying.
The main storyline is 1'000 times too hard for me.
Taking bar-room jobs = death.
There are hardly any planets on my map.
I can't explore outside the station without dying.
...
So my experience of the game boils down to ... fly to waypoint - meet enemies - die - reload savegame - repeat ad infinitum.

OK. I know this is 99% sure for the simple reason that I'm a crap gamer, or the game is quite simply not for me, but I'm sure I can't be the only one, and having just spent 109 Euros on it, I don't want to just throw it in the corner as unplayable when I've only got to level 8.

So I really need to either be able to adjust the games difficulty level, or I need some cheat-codes or something.

Is this game really that difficult? If you keep dying, then you are doing something wrong. Try changing your tactics, because if you're doing the same thing all you are going to get is the same result. Also, having the right ship/gun/shield combo does wonders. Another good tip is making sure your guns have matching range and speed because the gun sights get thrown off if you have guns with varying speeds and ranges. So instead of having 5-6 guns hitting your target, you only have 2. Also, get the best thruster you can. If the action is getting to hot, then just hit tab and try to take some evasive action. Flying slow and straight is the best way to die. Also, what method are you using to control your ship during combat? Always Always Always use mouse flight in combat (by hitting spacebar). This gives you better aim and maneuverability. This may sound stupid, but are you using nanobots and shield batteries? having a good supply of them really will help you out when the going gets tough.

It's a bit difficult to help you without knowing what ship you are in, what guns you're using, and what system you're flying in. The best ship in liberty is not the best ship in bretonia.

*indistinct laughter*

I'm sorry, but i just can't believe you're really meaning this. The SP missions are a pushover, really!

I think you really need to change your tactics, and maybe trade for a while (download the cargo computer, and read a bit, so that you know what traderoutes are profitable) and then get a better ship.

I've finished SP campaign in about 13 hours (and was taking my time!)

Sorry but yes I'm being serious

Oh yes someone wanted to know what tactics I'm using too ...

Enemies appear on screen - I die.

I know it's a lousy tactic, but I havn't found a more successful one yet, which is why I need to be able to tone the difficulty level down, or get some cheats. <cries at her uselessness>

I think when the others asked for your tactics, they meant how are you flying. For example, do you fly at them head-on? Do you use afterburners irregularly? Do you fly in straight-lines for extended lengths during combat? When you notice that you are getting hit, what is the very first thing you do?

Anyway, reading through your equipment list, I spot an immediate problem...you need a shield that is much better than the Guardian Graviton shield. In Bretonia, most weapons used by the factions there do good damage against Graviton shields. Get yourself a lvl 4 (or higher, if possible) Positron shield ASAP. That should allow you to have higher combat survivability.

Good luck!

Do you use Mouse Steering? - Yes
Do you fly at them head-on? - No
Do you use afterburners irregularly? - Yes
Do you fly in straight-lines for extended lengths during combat? - No (I don't have extended lengths during combat :/ )
When you notice that you are getting hit, what is the very first thing you do? - Theoretically I would change direction, hit afterburn, change direction a few more times ... but practically my shields are usually down within 2 seconds & a rocket has just slammed into me - you have failed ...

Mustaphina,

I don't know if this will help or not, but when my daughter was learning the game she had similar problems. I found that she was playing with headphones and the sound volume was up fairly high. I put her on speakers with the volume just high enough to hear important messages and she did much better. Seems all the sounds were distracting her. Now that she has the hang of combat, the volume is back up. ;-)

what really baffles me is that you say you're blowing up in about two seconds. is your shield even mounted on the ship? there's no way you should be dying that quickly...this is very strange. the bretonia light fighter should be good enough. the crusader has better armour and holds more guns though, so you might want to take a peak at it.

If you're really this desperate for cheats, go to the perfoptions file in my computer and change DIFFICULTY_SCALE = 1.00 TO 0.00.
You are now invulnerable. But don't go flying into a star, that still kills you.

Oki thx that was about what I needed, although I would have much preferred to have been able to just tone down the difficulty. Being invulnerable is only marginally more interesting than dying every time.

Why game developers can't put in varying difficulty levels I'll never understand. Not all humans are equally skillful in all situations.

Ack. 109 Swiss Francs of course not Euros :p

Post Fri Apr 25, 2003 7:51 pm

i reckon if you set 0.50 instead of 0.00 it might make you tougher but not invulnerable....dont know for sure though....cant even find that file myself
