OK here is my question, which if has been asked before I apologize.

When a ship says max level weapons level 5 optimal level 3
how does this work?

if I put 4 class 3 weapons on my ship would they be better than 4 class 5 weapons??

What it means is that the energy generator of that ship is best suited to that class of weapon. For example:

Imagine a fighter with 6 gun slots, and it generates 480 energy per second. Now imagine a series of guns, which occur in each of the 10 Classes. Class 1 uses 10 energy a second, Class 2 uses 20, etc etc

Now, the optimum class for this fighter would be 8. Why? 6 x 80 = 480, the energy output. If you use Class 10 weapons, you use 120 extra energy a second and will quickly run out. The numbers aren't often that convenient, but it's a good idea of how it works

I do tend to drain my energy quickly in dogfights.

I always use max weapon class in my slots.

Using max weapon class isn't necessarily a bad idea, it just means you have to be more careful and ration your shots more.
