Actually, being neutral to everyone does have one advantage. It allows you to explore the entire Sirius sector more or less unhindered (Nomads notwithstanding).
I know that not many of us are "tourists", but I find that I enjoy playing the game purely flying around into every little nook and cranny of every system. Having enemies taking shots at you really puts a damper on that experience, though, so I made myself neutral to all factions. As long as you carry no cargo, you're fine.
And because exploration can chew up your nanobots and shield batteries (dang radiation zones!
), you just need to do the occasional "big" trade run once to refresh your money supply. Even a relatively puny 70 cargo hold VHF will net you more that 100k just going one way, to mention nothing of the return trip. Or you can even mine stuff and sell them, though that is obviously more time consuming.
So, it really depends on your playing style. If you're into trading, then having totally neutral factions will get boring, yes. But if you're into exploration like me, then having all factions neutral is very useful.
I guess after I'm done with exploration, I'll mess up my factions again and start to have fun blasting away at others *cackle*.
