Ok. I went and rechecked my defiitions, and you are correct about Nova and Super Nova phenomena. I was passing on information I recieved a long time ago. (Although, I still hold that a Super Nova can involve more than one star.) I am glad that you have been able to pass along more information than I had. (Although, I do NOT appriciate the fact you decided that you needed to insult me.)However, they do NOT have difinitive proof yet on the exhistance of black holes. To be more precise...

"Do black holes actually exist? Most physicists believe they do, basing their views on a growing body of observations. In fact, present theories of how the cosmos began rest in part on Einstein's work and predict the existence of both singularities and the black holes that contain them. Yet Einstein himself vigorously denied their reality, believing, as did most of his contemporaries, that black holes were a mere mathematical curiosity. He died in 1955, before the term "black hole" was coined or understood and observational evidence for black holes began to mount."

As you can see, they have growing evidence that black holes DO exhist, but they do NOT actually have complete proof. After all. How do you measure and prove something exhists when you can't even see it? When they tell you to believe something exhists without proof, it is called faith, and religion has a market on that.

Im just going to add some things to this about nova's and supernovas.

you got the basic idea of a nova, basically its when there is a sudden outburst of radiant energy which can increase its luminosity by hundreds or thousands of times. In most cases nova's are formed by a white dwarf in a binary system.

there are two types of of supernovae.
type I supernova : involves a white dwarf in a binary star cluster. In most cases there is a larger star dumping matter and material into the white dwarf. Larger doesnt neccesarily mean more massive, which is why the dwarfs gravity well pulls matter from the larger star. (Side note : it is estimated that a teaspoon of matter from a white dwarf weighs >2 tons.) As the actual mass of the dwarf increases so that is weighs a little bit more than the our sun (sol), the balencing of gravity and pressure dosent exist, and the dwarf beings to colapse. The core of the dwarf gets so incredibly hot, that a huge amount of Fusion reactions begins again (as apposed to the degenerate reactions that were happening before) There is so much fusion going on in the center of the star, that it cant handle it, and in less than a second, the star goes boom: one huge one at that.

Type II supernova: this involves a truely massive star, which is greater than 12sm (12 times the suns mass). basically the same situation, where the pressure from the heat in the core cant support mass of the outer layers of the larger stars.
with a star that has a mass between 12-40 sm, the supernova leaves a neutron star. (like the one in the game). if the star is larger than 40sm, the resulting supernova leaves a black hole.

just thought that i would leave some word definitions :-D.

Do only scientists play this game? remeber it JUST a game if they want a nova or supa nova or what ever to happen it can.

on a side note, its 'sunslayers' slay suns, wat, i ask you, does the starkiller do? kill stars?
No, but the Moonstalker Missile DOES stalk moons. I have screenshots to prove it.

Post Sun Mar 30, 2003 8:39 pm

yeah... and my catapult missile has a warhead made of rock and is lauched via a mechanism made with wood and strings.

Post Sun Mar 30, 2003 8:41 pm

well, finally someone is right about the supernova definition - amen, Ahab. and one more thing - stop discussing our sun, it does not have enough mass to explode into a supernova. for anyone interested in the lifecycle of the stars here's a link:
http://www.astronomynotes.com/evolutn/chindex.htm
somehow i am disappointed, it would be great to have a supernova in this game

I agree, they made a pretty cool super nova/nova/turbo nova or whatever in Freespace 2. As for the black hole, I would be happy with a giant cool looking black radioactive blob, it doesn't need to be scientifically acurate or anything

lol ya same thing though.

I got most of that crap from the dictionary, I think thats the sad part about it :
Even a 25 year old dictionary knows what those things are, *sighs*

There's something called a Hyper-Nova... I can't remember what it is, though. Something fancy.

And the story is BS. They wouldn't waste their time programming that in if it destroyed the system. People on MP servers could wipe out hundred's of other player accounts by destroying a system. Total, 100% BS.

I have two things to say in this post:

1. I would like a begin a motion to change the name of our home system from 'The Solar System' to the Terran System.

2. I have heard that it is theorized that when matter is brought into a blackhole the atoms are then dumped out at another black hole, did anyone here about this theory and does anyone believe in it?

Post Sun Mar 30, 2003 10:29 pm

We've got some great definitions in here now! Just so you know, hypernova is a term that describes a phenomenon that may or may not exist. Scientists have seen several supernovae that are up to 40 times brighter and release 40 times more energy than "regular" supernovae. If the force is exerted in all directions equally, it is probable that these observations were of a different type of event, but many scientists believe that supernovae emit forces of a greater magnitude in two opposing directions, so these hypernovae may have been supernovae seen from a special angle, i.e. they spewed that extra energy in our direction.

Regarding issues if this (or black holes, or whatever else) were to be in the game, I personally think it would be cool and wouldn't care if they did it in a scientifically accurate manner, as long as it was not ridiculously inaccurate. If they put in black holes that looked cool and sucked you in if you got too close, that would be good enough for me. I don't care how accurate the forces they exert are depicted. I mean, really, it's just a video game guys.

if a Nova collapses, the Star dies and cools over billions of years, and then its a hunk of rock.

Which is then called a "Brown Dwarf " i might add.

hehe, didnt know that

Our suns a Medium Yellow I believe Might be a Large though.

Solaris is a Large orange, and it exploded in a Supernova not long ago I believe, I still cant find information on it though ;/

this is a total fake
i hacked
doesnt work

fired about 200 in 30 secs
then i enchanced the damage

still doesnt work

conclusion
total flub

i personnoanlly flew to within 1k of the sun and saw all the torpedos hit
absolutely no change

interesting fact

when you set the refire delay of a sunslayer torpedo launcher
turn on unlimited ammo
and hold down the fire button

you can actually create a massive fuse

when the first torpedo hit, it torched off the secound.. and the third and forth and fith

so on and so forth until it reached the one that just got launched

it blew out all my external equipment
didnt destroy me cause i was invulnerable
