man, dont know what server you play on, but goddamn that sounds like you took words directly from my mouth i was making this joke once over System about sunslayers being able to slay suns and put whole systems into complete blackout, hehehe, ah well, the story is bull****, it just doesnt work, not even in single player, unless you do some modding.......

Well, I am not gonna argue if it is possible in the game to make a supernova, but do you know what makes a star to go into a supernova? Well, I have been playing the game really slowly - I mean, I explore everything, so it takes me a lot of time for a system, that's why I've managed to visit about 1/4 of the systems displayed in my galaxy map, and from what I see there is no star capable of going into supernova - anyone seen a giant star? ingnore the neutron star - it is a result of a supernova? The twin stars in the Edinburgh systems also?!!Where should I look?
hey dark star....what an IDEA!!! Why aren't there any black holes in this game????
And also, why are the planet rings in this game not fun at all...just very think layers of ...well nothing to be exact. Where is the dust and rock layer that when you fly through it moves like water waves around a ship. That would have been so nice to see...i mean what a space experience that would be
of course let me add that this discussion over blowing up a sun is crap and you should all just concentrate on other things.
Besides the torpedoes in this game can't damage a space station or a battle ship so why do you think it could (in a million years) be able to destroy a star.
Even in star trek it takes a lot more than a few quantum torpedoes to destroy a star....and we're not talking about anything close to quantum torpedoes in Freelancer.

Download the Trailor for the game from 3 years ago, the first one. It shows a supernova destroy the sol system.
A supernova is the result of a star.. blowing up... that simply put I suppose.
I dont think you can really make a star Supernova IRL, but theoretically you could just put thousends of tons of nukes in the center and blow them up, if you could get to the center that is.
As for the blackhole... it was going to be in th game, but they removed it for a few reasons... well these arnt their reasons, but they are a few guess's people have decided might as well be the real reasons.
1. No one would be able to get close enough to it to scan it or see it before it had sucked them in, thats the first reason.
2. The mathimatical equation for a blackhole is insane, and the games engine most likely hasnt comprehended anything like it thus far. Im sure its possible, but right now if you have a black hole in the middle of New York system, im not sure they have allowed the engine to even figure out that much math of it having to pull all the things in that system into it within a fraction of a second.
3. Their mean . You CAN see a Blackhole in the VERY last second of the very last cutscene after you destroy the alien planet. But its not very clear.
My reason.
4. Its for an expansion. I guess the best example of a Blackhole form any game or movie has been from Earth and Beyond. You dont actually see a black hole, but there is a museium (persay) somewhere (i dont remember, I only played beta) that gives you pictures of space anomilies, that being one of them... its a 3D model, pretty good too.
Oh well... There werent that many cool things about the space anomilies in this game. Suns are cool, but thats the only thing I can think of right now.

Did people really expect sunslayer torpedos to slay a sun, they wouldn't make it close enough to discharge the ordinance. The only sci fi reference to a torpedo destroying a star was from some Star Wars novel set after the galactic civil war.Nice expassion pack mission idea though, stop some terrorists from blowing up the Liberty Sun

There is at least one more: In Star Trek Generations Dr. Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) destroys multiple suns with special missiles/torpedoes in order to change the course of a mysterious Nexus so that it hits a planet and sucks him in. He did that because this Nexus was some kind of "paradise" that would enable him of living an eternal life and getting everything he wants.

which every man of every faith can embrace. " - Murphy MacManus
Tolian was probubly the coolest Star Trek bad guy.
Seriously the only thing that we know of right now that can KILL a star besides itself, is a Blackhole.
75% of the Blackholes we have found (hubble telescope found) were sucking away at suns, and thats how we found them.

Not to be anal or anything, but I thought I would define Nova, and Super Nova.
A Nova happens when, for some reason or another, a stars energy explodes outward in a great energy wave. Usually, after this expansion, it colapses on itself again, possibly forming a "black hole". I say possibly, because this is really only theoretical. They haven't really got any proof yet. But mathmatically, it is considerd not only possible, but probable.
A Super Nova, involves several stars at once. Maybe even up to a whole galaxy. Again, it is considerd mathmatically feasable. When those stars colapse, the gravitational pull is that much greater. (Can you imagine a "black hole" with the gravitational pull of a galaxy?)
Of course, this is all conjecture, because they still haven't come to any difinitive proof of the exhistance of black holes. It is just "mathmatically feasible".

*cough* Ya, No actually
a Super Nova is 1 LARGE star exploding.
It is NOT multiple stars. Sorry to burst your bubble.
A Supernova is when ONE star (a good example is the size of our Sun, that would create a supernova) goes to a critical mass state and, all that scientific mumbojumbo.
Blackholes arnt theoretic... its a sad fact that its been proven they exist (CX-1 is a good example)
Super Nova class 2's have a small probability of creating Neutron Stars.
Now... you made a really big ass out of yourself dude.
a NOVA isnt when a star Explodes, a Nova is when a star Greatly brightens (iving off a lot more heat then normal) and then over the period of weeks, months, years, or even generations, it slowly dies back down to its origional "brightness"
A Supernova is a rare event where most of the material in a star explodes, creating an object that for a short ammount of time gives off insanely huge ammounts of energy. Now, a Neutron Star is that object, and sometimes a Supernova doesnt completely collapse itself back in, Creating a Neutron Star.
All Supernova's create blackholes if they dont create Neotron Stars, if they dont then its just a Nova, and if a Nova collapses, the Star dies and cools over billions of years, and then its a hunk of rock. Sometimes a Supernova does create a neutron star, which then explodes normally, sometimes creating blackholes, and sometimes not. Thats kinda where we think most Asteroid Fields come from.
A nova isnt when a star dies buddy

i tot i'd add to that. . .
nova - a star that suddenly increases in brightness, often by a factor of as much as 10,000 then slowly fades back to its original luminousity (brightness), a nova is the result of an explosion on the surface of a white dwarf star, caused by matter falling onto its surface from the atmosphere of a binary companion.
Super nova - well, i seem to be unable to get a good hold of info on thst rite now. .
and as far as i know, stars 'die' hence, exploding, to form EITHER neutron stars or black holes. theres quite a difference between those two.
when stars with a mass of 3 of our sun (it was something else, i cant remember) or more, the star will collapse, into a black hole. this is cuz the mass creates a gravitational force so strong that the matter itself collapses... and the neutron star is a star with less than 3 suns. this kinda stars are like really small, and the space between the electrons and the nucleus in its atoms are virtually non-existent. a teaspoon of is like billions of tonnes.
i didn't mean to sound all that 'anal' but i just wanted to clear up doubts. the definition of the NOVA is from 'astronomy today', some scientific mumbo jumbo book, so it'll be correct, unless u defy the works or two guys holding Phds in astronomy and physics.. and the black hole and neutron star is from something i read long ago . . . so it might be a bit fuzzed up.
on a side note, its 'sunslayers' slay suns, wat, i ask you, does the starkiller do? kill stars? well, i got to try that out...
presently, my world is upside down, so if u do not mind, u'll have to tok to my a$$

The whole notion is just absurd. Stars have a huge amount of mass -- many, many times the mass of a planet, even one as big as Jupiter -- and they generate enormous amounts of radiant energy. A torpedo that wasn't doing something funky, like travelling near the speed of light to take advantage of relativistic slowing of time, would be incinerated before it could even get close. And as powerful as a sunslayer is against a ship or a space station, the amount of energy it produces is utterly insignificant compared to what a star radiates into space, much less the awesome energies going on in its core.
So, perhaps a torpedo capable of travelling just under the speed of light, with some kind of nuclear warhead designed to cause instability in the reactions going on within a star, could induce a supernova. At least that would be somewhat plausible. But, I doubt the militaries would allow just anyone to have access to that kind of technology.
