If we could just stop people from putting these emoticons in the subject line it would make my weekend

i've wondered this for a while. Why don't u like when people do that?

Post Fri Sep 24, 2004 1:10 pm

and we just have to give esq his smiley

Great idea, now all we have to do is animate it so it shakes its head

Oh, no, on second thoughts, probably not 56k modem freindly. It would die if it was animated...

@ Stinger, why don't you put it up as a rule? And as part of the faq's? because some people really don't know that its not liked

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 12:59 am

Because it's only Stinger that hates them, not Bargib or any of the other mods/admins ....

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 3:10 am

why not get rid of emoticons altogether?

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 8:59 am

@Neo you'd be surprised, emoticons in the subject lines do make the place look untidy and cluttered, havent you realised when it did happen occasionaly that there was a smiley in the subj line?

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 12:37 pm

I hate emoticons in subject lines, all capital posts, and arrogant posts that may try to infer humour, but should be more wary! (that too subtle?)

Emoticons in subject headers - if it were allowed - everyone would use them. Imagine huge lines of emoticons just to be visual - it would look like a spray effect of too many beers with a curry after a night out! Vomit'o'view - no way.

Capitals - infer shouting and urgency. If everyone used them (which they would to ensure that their thread was seen above all elses....cause everyone likes to see their threads being popular) then it would make the forums unreadable !!
Its not just Stinger and myself who don't like this - Eraser, Wizard and Mustang also edit posts to remove them......its just that I check the forums more regularly...or in my own time zone...and I check nearly all forums, not just where i see the new post icon (as its rarely telling me the truth!).

reminds me of the time that Lithium Brick character posted something in the thread my bro made about his arm, its a shame i deleted my original comment i went mad with him

The idea here is to let posts stand on their own merit. The need for ALL CAPS and emoticons and special characters is subject lines is not warranted.

Maybe we should ask "why" people feel the need to post subject lines with ALL CAPS, emoticons and special characters and if they are being truthful and are not done so make their post stand out from the rest I'll stand corrected.

Post Sun Sep 26, 2004 9:47 am

@Stinger, not all caps and emoticons are to make thread stand out, sometimes really only use it to convey emotion, i know many times I feel like putting them in subj lines, not to make the topic stand out, just to show what I feel. So yea there are people who dont do it to let the topic stand out Just like there are ppl who use it to draw attention.

Post Sun Sep 26, 2004 10:29 am

Meh - you should convey your feelings in the actual content of you post - and not in the title. If you did, then what would be the point of the post material?

@Esq - WHO the HECK is SHOUTING? I cannot STAND people SHOUTING all the time. MY word, you would NEVER find me doing that!

I should use the bold more to make points stick out more - but bold casts my mind back to Reynen using it excessively in posts - which hurt my eyes alot! Had to turn down brightness and contrast alot during those periods

I think an emoticon serves a communicative purpose that, no matter how well crafted a sentence, without it may not succeed.... If you take into account the fact that not all present at TLR are English native speakers. I think it helps to use them to make sure that the point of humor, for example, is not lost in what otherwise may be taken to be a declarative statement which otherwise might be taken negatively.

Post Sun Sep 26, 2004 8:26 pm

You never get another chance to make a first impression. If you're going to require an emoticon to get your post thead stated, than maybe it shouldn't be the lead post but a follow-up to someone else?

It's a fine art to catch someone's attn in a one liner. That art isn't reserved for only those that speak the language well. State the fect of the post and let the content tell the tale. I just truly believe emoticons used to catch your eye or announce the post is bogus and is just confusing.

Elevate the standards, don't lower the bar. Some people do not know what an emoticon is nor what it may mean. I run into them ever day of my life. Granted they aren't all gamers. But the point is to believe an emoticon is nessesary in a one liner subject is tougher than just saying what you mean. Easier to understand too. I hate opening a message based on the original post content and finding something totally different than what I was expecting to see. Usually it becomes a waste of my time.

@Chips - if you think that was bad...look this one over and puke.
