I have a proposal... a potentially unpopular proposal, but w

OK, the way I see it is that there's basically two different kinds of people who post here... some of the oldtimers who have been here a long time, have seen every possible subject, and have pretty much lost any trace of patience with us lower lifeforms, and then there's those of us who'd like to be able to discuss topics at will without fear of retributiuon, flaming, or other basic rudeness.

So, here's my proposal: make a new forum section just for dorks like me who actually still want to talk about incredibly boring subjects like what's the best ship, what are the best guns, why doesn't the game support joysticks, etc etc etc... you can even call it the Boring Thread Forum, if you want. Intolerant people don't need to suffer the boredom of glancing at thread titles that they've seen before, and the rest of us can go there and talk in a non-persecutive environment. I think the only rules that should apply to the new forum should be A: No rudeness, and B: NO TELLING PEOPLE TO USE THE SEARCH ENGINE.

How about some votes?
All in favor, say "Juni's got a nice butt."
All opposed, say "I'm grumpy".

Juni's got a nice butt.

Yes, absolutely everything I post, including this, is spam.
Bite me.

I don't know how difficult that is to set up and operate, but if it's not too hard that sounds like a great idea. New people are constantly either buying the game or coming to TLR, and they'll probably never offer any input on some of these subjects because they get insta-locked. Why not allow these threads in a separate place so they don't disturb the people who don't want to see them but allow those who do a place to find them and discuss?

You forgot to say "Juni's got a nice butt".
*L*

Yeah, I know Juni's not real, but she's got a nice butt anyway.

Post Tue Sep 09, 2003 5:56 am

That's great!!! I can't wait to get rid of you.

Just teasing.

Although, I am one to come down on the illiterate who only wants to be heard and can't read a darn thing. When I first started posting, I read about 20 threads and over a 150 posts before I posted anything myself. No one ever called me a n00b or newbie.

EDIT: Also, I read more than I post. Well, not during the recent ManHunt. But usually I read 12-15 posts for every one I offer. I haven't started a thread, except for the previous reason, in two months, I think.

There are far more reasons for these threads being locked or people getting replies like "use the frickin forum search" than the fact that some longtime members or the moderators are getting annoyed by threads they have witnessed about 100 times before. I´m such a longtime member and yes, I´m sometimes a little bit too fast with the "use the forum search" reply. But I always do it respectfully and friendly.

The thing is, FL has been released since March and the time after the release has caused an enormous stress on the TLR server, because these forums got flooded as never seen before on this site. We had threads about "Why does this goddamn game have no frickin joystick support !!!!!!!!" and "DA consists of a bunch of screw ups !!!" and "Die Microsoft DIE !!!!" about a million times. TLR´s owner (Bargib) had to appoint a lot more moderators to deal with all the insults, spam, incredible disrespectful threads towards TLR staff, Freelancer and DA/MS etc. Don´t get me wrong, no one will oppose to healthy criticism about a game, but the way most of these threads were announced and went on, was highly inadmissible.

After a month or two the Joystick and FL bashing thing was mostly over, but other threads like "Is Trent gay or not ? Discuss here !" and "Let´s discuss Juni´s butt !" were again seen a million times. Also threads about which ship is better have been posted here beyond belief. You have to understand that this is a Freelancer Fan Site and that Bargib and the mods want this to be just that. Repeatedly bashing FL was not something they wanted on a FL Fan Site. Also the other threads which I mentioned clearly had no contribution to the FL community.

There´s nothing wrong with "which ship is better" threads, but after it has been discussed a million times, than clearly everything must have been covered. Besides, more than 90% of these threads had no real discussion going on, but merely consisted of spam and insults. You can say that we are all fans and if you want to discuss it, than you should have the oportunity to do so and we should not whine about seeing it for the 100th time, but see it like this. Freelancer has been released quite a while and there has been plenty enough time to discuss the things which were bothering you or you had questions about. Of course I (we) understand that some of you just recently received a copy of Freelancer and of course new members are extremely welcome, but you have to understand that there are a lot of members who have been here a long time and you simply can´t go posting like crazy without adapting to your surroundings a bit and beeing a little considerate of members who have been here longer than you.

Now some subjects have been covered over and over again and the members who have been here a long time have indeed seen this more than enough times. It´s not just because we don´t want you to discuss whatever you please, but every single one who joines TLR after you wants to do the same. Don´t you think there comes a point where we all have to say " enough is enough " ? Besides, most of these repetitious threads have become spam fests and places where people insult one another. The longtime members and the moderators have seen it happen way to many times, so that´s why some of these members give you the "use the forum search" replies and are some threads locked. The TLR staff wants to make all of us TLR fans happy, so they will give the newcomers a little latitude, but not to much, as they want to keep the longtime members happy too. Does this make any sense to you ?

Thanks Nick !

I just like to add that we (the longtime members) should be a little bit less harsh on some people from time to time. It would be proper of us to kindly and respectfully put it to someone´s attention that a particular question or discussion has been handled on these forums many times and then redirect them to the Forum Search, without being rude by calling people n00bs and saying stuff like "Use the frickin Forum Search !!!". Of course this only goes for people who politely ask a question or want to start a discussion which has been handled over and over again, and not for forum trolls, spammers etc. It´s all about beeing equally respectful towards eachother.

I think eraser hit the nail squarely on the head there.

The biggest problem is spam and some thread topics are reproduced so frequently (in the case of best ships) that members use them as a free reign excuse to spam. Unfortunately in these circumstances we have to kill the patient to cure the disease. We certainly don't do it lightly and put a lot of consideration into it before taking action.

Don't worry Mustang, I think you're doing fine
Letting certain threads hang on the borderline of the barren wasteland of the spam for a fair amount of time, so everyone can have a say in it (once again ).
That's good.

I agree, it's the way things are being said and not per definition the content wich dicides a *click*.

Im with gromit! lol. still gota admit they did a really good job Anyway, I see only one and a half problems with this. One, if you notice, the "old timers" rarely post new threads. This is because they know most of what they need to from being here so long. What they do, (correct me if im wrong) is reply to the newer members threads with helpfull information, words of wisdom, conversation etc. So if newbies post everything in another forum to avoid reprisal the main one would die, and the newbies would be missing out on the vast resource more experianced gamers provide. The half problem, all these rules and restrictions come from a time of anarchy. Without them, TLR would be a much less pleasant place. If you make a forum without them, such things could happen again (its a "half" problem bacause of the "could") Plus, there really aren't that many best ship threads these days and I have yet to see a joystick one. Everything can be good in moderation and posts that bother you, don't pay any attention to! I think we can live quite happily as things are, so im gona have to say that... im grumpy

Who are you and why are you reading my quote?
