And the winners of the 2006 World Cup will be...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

And the winners of the 2006 World Cup will be...

...England, of course!

Seriously though, anyone else heard of this little competition?? I kinda took it for granted that there'd be a thread in here somewhere...

How's about a sweepstake? We've got one going at work and I stand to win £100 if either France, Ecuador, Paraguay, Trinidad+Tobago, Australia or the Czechs pull their fingers out and win. Let's say the next 31 members with 10 posts or more (to prevent people signing up for lots of accounts ) who post in this thread all get entered into the sweepstake, and then we'll figure out some completely unbiased way of assigning each person a team.

Not sure about a prize though...you might end up with something crap like "TLR's respect" I'm afraid. Unless someone wants to stump up £100...

I say Brazil will probably win in, depending on how much effort they put in. Czechs held their ground pretty well last night.

England, however, still havn't actually scored a goal...

They've got a good team on paper, but they've failed to show a great deal of passion.

Brazil will win (I hope) if England don't, although they'll need to pick up their game a bit more (they're being lazy at the moment) and maybe even start without Ronaldo unless he starts to actually move about. He proved how lethal he still is with an awesome shot that missed by inchs on his first touch (and only) of the ball the other day. Truly awesome team, but carrying a lil extra baggage in a couple of lazy players. Almost like they were playing with 9 men for most of the match :/

Def up for sweepstake, at work I have Iran and Costa Rica - so I am not holding out much hope. However, I am currently in 3rd place out of 16 for the predictions of results

By the way, keeping it completely unbiased... i'll take Brazil in the sweepstake, or I'll lock your thread!!

Isn't it obvious who will win? The ticket sellers of course! But then the losers will be the unfortunate cops that have to try to contain the riots afterward in the losers country....

The SpaceNuts always return.

Well, since Chips has nabbed Brazil, I think I'm going to go with Spain, due to their 4-0 demolition of the Ukranians.

Post Wed Jun 14, 2006 1:59 pm

Ha, perhaps I should make the rules of a sweepstake clear. You don't get to pick the teams, they're assigned randomly or else everyone would just try and choose Brazil...and England would never get picked...

Except for Chips that is. In a shining example of his flagrant misuse of power Chips has 'randomly' chosen Brazil himself...

still impressed that ANYBODY is still here. Seeing the TV-ratings of the Football-games you might think that 99.8 % of the male population is in front of the TV-set (0.1 on the loom) and 50 % of the females too. The rest (50 % of the females and 0.1% of the males (=ME ) is in the cinema.
Going to the movies during football-WC is THE flirting opportunity. Seriously ! As a man you are the only one there, this gives attraction. The girls who fled the guys at home think you don't like football - adds more attraction. The girls seeing that there's concurrence around for this single man not interested in football will try to impress each other and you - adds some spice .

Oh yes: I am in too But please do not identify me with the Swiss team. I prefer Costa Rica or Poland (already out ....)

I actually think these guys have a fair shot at winning this year. If we see a Brazil/Argie final, we may see some aactual deaths though...

Post Fri Jun 16, 2006 5:36 am

Alright, at this rate we won't get 31 people until the final starts. Give it another day or so and then we'll just take three teams each or something.

And yeah, Argentina aren't all that bad. In fact they're very good. Currently 2-0 up against Serbia who are also a pretty decent team...

Post Fri Jun 16, 2006 7:29 am

I just got 5 points in office sweepstakes for predicting Argentina 6, Serbia 0.

Whomever gets the Argies will do well... and Spain, they are looking strong too.

I'm pulling for Germany, like every World Cup.

Okay, since we're now well into the group stages we might as well draw. Plus there's now eight of us which goes nicely into 32 teams...

How about this for random: alphabetical list of teams, alphabetical list of names, and we get four each? So it looks like this:

1. Accushot
2. Aceaz
3. Boomerang One
4. Chips
5. ds9phoenix
6. Killa
7. topher
8. zazie

Angola........................1
Argentina................2
Australia................3
Brazil........................4
Costa Rica................5
Croatia........................6
Czech Republic................7
Ecuador................8
England........................1
France........................2
Germany................3
Ghana........................4
Holland........................5
Iran........................6
Italy........................7
Ivory Coast................8
Japan........................1
Mexico........................2
Paraguay................3
Poland........................4
Portugal................5
Saudi Arabia................6
Serbia & Montenegro........7
South Korea................8
Spain........................1
Sweden........................2
Switzerland................3
Togo........................4
Trinidad & Tobago........5
Tunisia........................6
Ukraine........................7
USA........................8

That means we've got the following:

Accushot: Angola, England, Japan and Spain
Aceaz: Argentina, France, Mexico and Sweden
Boomerang One: Australia, Germany, Paraguay and Switzerland
Chips: Brazil (gah!), Ghana, Poland and Togo
ds9phoenix: Costa Rica, Holland, Portugal and Trinidad & Tobago
Killa: Croatia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia
topher: Czech Republic, Italy, Serbia & Montenegro and Ukraine
zazie: Ecuador, Ivory Coast, South Korea and USA

Good luck...and congratulations in advance Chips...

Well, Chips has won...but I'm happy enough with this. Evryone seems to have a fairly strong team. Let's see how the rest of the group stages play out...
